  1. Hewell just sent me a link to a post that was on here about a newbie competition and it had a tonne of links in it. I read those and they explained all about the oils and how they work in soap and how to make a recipe for your own soap. After printing out everything that i've saved so far i've run out of ink in my printer, so monday im getting more ink and i'm going to print out everything from that post. I tell ya it was a god send of a post. Here is the list from that post of the oils: Cleansing: Coconut Oil, Palm Kernal Oil, Babassu Oil Soft Oils: Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernal, Avocado, Castor, Hazelnut, Hemp, Meadowfoam, Olive, Passion Fruit, Rice Bran, Soybean, Walnut, Wheat Germ Hard Oils: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Kokum Butter, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Palm Kernal Oil, Lard, Tallow I can get olive oil, rice bran, avocado oil, Lard. I looked down there for castor oil but couldn't find any, anywhere. And i found a website that said in australia Palm Oil can be bought from the supermarket, it is packaged as Frymasta. I went down and they had Palm oil too. So as you can see i can only get hard and soft oils, but can't get any cleansing oils. Not sure if you need to have cleansing oils though. I can't get litmus paper so with the tongue test if it feels zingy you said it has active lye, does that mean i shouldn't feel any zing at all if i put my tongue to it? I'm off to read through that post and see if i can make a recipe with those oils
  2. I'm sorry, but now i just think it's even funnier....lol, I can see you just HAD to make soap.. i'm the same way but I have to wait for my scales then suss out ingredients from somewhere... And besides as for the kids going to daycare just consider it good quality alone time something i think absolutely every mother in the world needs. My father in law told me i should get out of the houe by myself at least once a day even if it's just for half an hour or so... Hello if i was to go to the garage lock it and make soaps yes i'd be quite happy to be out of the house
  3. Gosh dang that just htrough a spanner into my works....lol i was just gonna try it and see how it turned out but i'm guessing i'd better not now seeing as i don't want too much lye in it. Considering 3 of my kids are old enough to want to try everything i make, i don't want to burn them or give them a reaction to it.. Thanks very much for that. I'll let my fingers do the walking and try to find actual coconut oil. Thank you.
  4. yeah I can't wait till they get here so i can get stuck into it.. I'll let you know how it goes...
  5. One of my other businesses is selling lingerie and adult products I got an email from a supplier today along with this joke i thought you might like it. A blonde heard that milk baths would make you beautiful. She left a note for her milkman to leave 15 gallons of milk. The milkman thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons, so he knocked on the door to clarify the point. "I found your note to leave 15 gallons of milk. Did you mean 15 gallons or 1.5 gallons?" "I want 15 gallons. I'm going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath." "Pasteurised?" "No, just up to my breasts." Don't know if i've posted in the right spot or not sorry... It made me laugh though.
  6. WOW it can be used for alot of stuff. My FIL has heart probelms and cholesterol problems so i printed that article twice. A copy for him and a copy for me. Thanks heaps SB14. But what is SAP??? And yeppers as soon as my scales turn up i'm gonna experiment. I'm bound to have failures along the way anyway, and I'm not one to sit there going oh but if i bugger it up i've wasted this amount of money. I'm the type of person that says ok i buggered up lets try again . My MIL hates it she'll buy fish for $5, and i'll spend $500. When they die she says that cost me $5 and if i loose one I cry for days......lol Probably lucky i'm geared the way i am cos what ive been reading soap making is an expensive hobby so probably a good thing. Thanks for your help
  7. Thanks for that sudsnwicks, i acutally bought a pair of scales off ebay last night, they're getting sent today so hopefully i'll have them monday or tuesday then i'm right as rain to go . Thanks for the help
  8. ROFPMSL....this is going to sound dumb but.... here goes.... what you said made sense but it didn't make sense if that sounds normal...lol I understand that it has to be 100% lye but not neccesarily 100% pure same as if i put 100% pure petrol into a jerry can then added to it an additive for say my fuel injectors the petrol is 100% pure but the contents of the jerry can aren't 100% petrol... if that made sense??? but i'm confused on does that mean that my 98% would be ok to use for soaps??
  9. i've never made soaps before either, but found out that copher is actually coconut oil but they are putting soy lechitin in it now so wasn't sure if it was still ok to use it for soap making. Went to buy some when i was at the supermarket to check out if it said how much etc. and thought i'll try it and see what happens but they were out of it. I'm doing a search now on soaps and what is safe etc.. found a site that said Sodium hydroxide (lye) was ok to use at 98-99% pure. Just checking to see if this is true. But at the end of the day if all else fails i'll just make it and if it doesn't turn out then at least i'll know:undecided Thanks for your reply hun
  10. OOOHHHH LORDY what a bargain you got. Problem is though i'm in australia and that seller only ships to the states. So by the time i paid postage and then converted to australia (and postage would be more) it would probably work out just as dear for me if not a bit more but i was looking at the whole 76# thing mine that i'm getting are only 7kgs which is around 3.5lbs but they'll do me, if not i can always upgrade. Thanks though i've saved the sellers name in "myebay" so if i do want to upgrade i know exactly where to go. Thanks hun
  11. WOW Thanks jwahlton I'm still angel2211, if ever you see angel2211 on the internet it's usually a pretty safe bet that it is me . On the fish forums if there is someone new there from another forum and see me they know instantly who it is....lol Thanks a bunch i'm sure i speak for everyone here. Your an angel to do this for us and it is extremely appreciated. (dang can't find an angel or halo smilie to enter here for you sorry)
  12. I've applied at the whisk too, but you need someone to vouch for you. I can't even read the forums just for research till that happens... So here's hoping my fingers are crossed too. I heard there were lots of Aussies on there so i'm hoping to be able to chat to some of them and see where they get most of there stuff and if its different to where i get mine..
  13. Thanks guys. Yes i'm kind of super excited.... as for details my fave FO at the moment is without a doubt Dewberry. so more then likely it will be dewberry soap, I'm thinking CP. But at the end of the day i think it will be the easiest damn recipe i can find......lol I've got a heap but I received a PM today from "hewells" and it looks soooo easy it's not funny so hence i think i'll make that one. I came across a site today that shows what ingredients are and where you can find them and i found most of them were from the supermarket, then i load up candletech and there was this message from Hewells with a recipe, everything for which i can get at my local supermarket. Then the scales on Ebay..... Do you think something is trying to tell me to get making this soap or what...lol The scales are getting sent express tomorrow so should have them monday then i'll be bending everyone's ear again.... and i can't wait
  14. WHOO HOOOOOO I won the auction for those scales.... GUESS WHO'S MAKING SOAP NEXT WEEK...... GUESS WHO'S MAKING SOAP NEXT WEEK............GUESS WHO'S MAKING SOAP NEXT WEEK..... sorry but that's what my son and I were singing out whilst jumping up and down cuddling each other when the auction finished.. Guess we were kinda both excited....
  15. Thanx hun, now all i have to do is hope that I win the auction. Then i'm on my way to soap making. Thanks a heap.
  16. I found these scales on ebay and the auction closes tonight. Can someone please have a look at them and tell me if they would be any good for soap making. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270001359554&fromMakeTrack=true Any advice or help would be fantastic. TIA
  17. Hang on i'll go check it out again, I don't have any scales that's the problem i'm having. I can't get the scales i need for it around here. I'll go work out the grams on it.
  18. this is the number one reason why i haven't made soaps yet. the weighing of ingredients scares the livin daylights out of me. In australia we don't work in ounces and pounds (strange it's the only way i can work out how heavy a baby is though.. oh go figure). So i'm trying to convert a recipe i have to metric. Will this work?? 8oz = 48 teaspoons 16oz = 96 teaspoons 4.5oz = 27 teaspoons 9oz = 54 teaspoons I know that a teaspoon is 5mls so if for 8 oz i work on 48(teaspoons)x5(mls) = 240mls Would this work. Also how exactly do i weigh it. do i melt ingredients and pour say 240mls lard into a container or does it have to be weighed on scales... I think i already know the answer to this one it will be the scales, just because i don't have any yet...lol
  19. What is soy lecithin and how does it affect soaps? I live near absolutely no suppliers at all and my supplier is closed for stock taking for a whole 2 weeks :undecided . I found a website that told me what soap supplies i can get that are just from my local supermarket. One of them was copha but it went on to say "the manufacturer has recently decided to add soy lecithin to the coconut oil.. it can still be used, but we prefer to discourage using soy lecithin added copha for soapmaking." What are your ideas and views on this. I'm DESPERATE to make soap and was going to give it a go using copha just to see what happened but seeing as i've never made soap i've got nothing to compare with. Also any ideas what i can use for a mould till my supplier opens was thinking of a bowl shaped cup, pringles tin, plastic cutler draw... Yes as you can see i'm way up there on prestige and looks.....lol
  20. WOW thanks a heap guys, i'll definately be checking it all out. I've never even heard of OCM till you mentioned it but I do know that it works for me so will definately be checking that one out. My acne turns into sores and they don't heal for months and usually end up spreading to cover my entire chin and cheek right up to just under my eye I actually stumbled on it by mistake. I coloured my hair and the conditioning satchet that came with it was almond oil. I was putting that in and I had sores on my forehead which came in contact with the almond conditioner by morning they'd dried and become flaky and taut. I wondered if the massage oil i had would do the same I tried it and presto it did . I've never, ever had clear skin and Unfortunately my 10 year old daughter is having the same problems as me, So hopefully i'll be able to get something to suit her as well. Thanks for the recipe and the article danielb, i'm heading there right now to read that, then i'm sending off an order for supplies. I like the look of sawyers oil and serum too... Oh so many new toys to play with what ever will i do...hehe Thanks a heap everyone
  21. OMG I could only ever wish to make something like that... How YYYYUUUUMMMMYYYY do they look . As for they guy problems. Does your hubby know mine???? Cut off from it babe and if all else fails, make more soaps.
  22. I have a recipe for a "cold relief herbal soak" which is actually a tub bag, but i'm assuming it would work just as effective for the smell in a shower. Not too sure on it though but i have the recipe for it if your interested. I was thinking at first hang it from your shower head and make sure the water is aimed from your shoulders down but don't know if that will work. Sing out if you want it though.
  23. Thanks pamperme i've been reading alot on here about vanilla. Think i might hunt around for a really good quality oil before i try again. I've been getting some good stuff from heirloon so might check out their oils...
  24. How come i just don't have Wal Mart at all Love the salt bars too they look phenomenal. Well done
