    Hi all.  Love the list.

@Forrest.  Thanks for putting this list together and for the testing you've done on 6006.

I'm looking to start using 6006 and from everything I've read it can be a pain to wick.

The container I am looking to use is a 12 oz glass mason jar.  Diameter is 2.91", which is almost identical to an 8 oz tin.  I know that temperature, materials, FO, etc affect the burn and I'm ready to do lots of testing.  All I've used for containers thus far is 8 oz tins and 6 oz jars using 464 so I'm starting from scratch.  My question is that given the similarity of the diameters between the jar and the tin would this list be a good starting point?

Below is the jar I'm looking at.  Measurements are 4.75"height, 2.91" diameter.

Jars and tins are very, very different to wick. For a mason jar, be prepared to wick down a size or two.

What wick series are you using?

oh and welcome to the forum!

  2. @lovelyscents, it's a supposition based on the melt point and pouring temp recommendations, the congeal point, and the product description. It does have a harder needle penetration than the 4627, according to the PDS, so I'm guessing it has a slightly stiffer consistency than the 4627. I did see the PDS says that it comes in 16oz slabs or 50lbs cubes, but the product page on CW site states that it comes is a 1lb sample block, or a 50lb cube, which leads me to believe that it is closer to 4627 than 4630.

All guessing on my part, as I haven't ordered it yet! I will be sure to give a detailed report when I get my hands on some!

Side note, they have been OOS of 125 and 130 for a couple weeks. 😱 I'm getting a little nervous that the 133 is a replacement for the two... why Candlewic, why???

I think I'll drop them an email to see if I can get some info.

Thanks! I did order and really like their scents.

Anyone know what the tart blend is? I mean is it soy or paraffin? I'd like to give it a try. Tart Blend

Its paraffin. I've used it and liked it a lot.

They seem to be doing really well, but I have a sneaking suspicion that with any FO other than maybe something really heavy they would be too big for the straight paraffin. It seems pretty good in the blend though, which makes sense as soy tends to need a little more oomph. I'm going to start the wood wick testing and I think with fragrance I will might try the htp93's.

@Sarah S how big are the 10oz jars? Is the width similar to the 8oz? With how these 104s are burning I just can't imagine going as small as 73!  We'll see though.

It's exactly the same width, just deeper.

The 73 did start to mushroom a bit last night, so it might be too small after all. I'm only about a quarter way down the tin with both wicks though.

I have a bunch of Premiers I could test if I don't like the HTPs... the only cotton core I have is raw spools for pillars. Also depends on how desperate I am to perfect tins. 😂 At this point, I'm just playing with them to satisfy my curiosity.

  5. Oh gosh, they look pretty cool, don't they?

I imagine that you would have to refresh the pad thing quite often though. If they are like the air freshener blanks, mine lose most of their fragrance within a week or so of hanging in the car. I would think that with the heat, they would dry out even faster.

That's just speculation on my part though! 😊

Is perfumer's alcohol radically different than a body spray base?  Do our FOs act differently in one than the other?  Couldn't you just use the same concentration of FO in the body spray base that you would in the perfumers' alcohol and have the same result?  Maybe not but that's what I need to know.  I'm trying to figure out if I want to order perfumers' alcohol that I have no experience with, or if I would get the same results just concentrating the FO a bit more in body spray.

I think the problem would be that most body spray bases from suppliers are formulated to only hold up to a certain percentage of fragrance oil before you get separation and other issues. Usually it's only around 2-5%. For a good, strong, long lasting perfume, you really need a concentration more like 10-20% fragrance.

I suppose if you were using a base that was water, glycerine, and an emulsifier like polysorbate, you could get around that by adding more polysorbate to the base, but that would take some experimenting.

I think I'll run by the liquor store and get some 190 proof Everclear.  I always forget about that because I'm not in the habit of making perfumes (yet), but I bet with the shipping costs of our supplies these days that's going to be about as cheap if not even cheaper.

I use grain alcohol (the kind that's makes you go blind if you drink it straight, 😂), and it works great. I only make it for me, I don't sell it.

  7. Oh my gosh you guys, I just saw that Candlewic has a new wax, CBL 133!!!

I am beyond excited, looking at the specs, I think it is similar to IGI 4627, which I have been wanting to try! And they have a 10 pound sample size, so I don’t have to commit to a whole 25 or 50 lbs.

I’m driving up to PA in July, the big question is, can I wait that long to try it, or do I suck up the shipping charges and order some now? 🤣🤣

I have some serious FOMO going on!

Anyone else interested? Would you all like a review after I try it??

Which brands/distributors of paraffin wax do you all consider the best? Higher end wax. Are they blends, or straight paraffin with few additives. I’m not very familiar with paraffin wax.

Ok, you guys know what I'm going to say, right?

    😂

    Candlewic's CBL-125

That stuff is foolproof, super easy wax to use with great results. It's a paraffin with additives.

Their CBL-130 is also great, it's a parasoy blend.

Well dang.  Now I have to order something.

Someone, plz tell me what I can't live without from PFO?

Oh wow, they have so many good ones Barb!

I love their Bergamot Tobacco, it is so strong and a great “warm and cozy” alternative to bakery scents. It’s masculine, but not in a cologne kind of way, just deep and commanding with rich tobacco, some smooth spicy notes, and just a dash of bergamot to keep it from being too heavy.

I just ordered their Sugar Cookie since it has been so highly praised, and I have to say OOB it is very impressive!

Celestial Seas is wonderful if you’re looking for something fresher. It’s has a strong floral top note, a salty seaweed heart, and a light musk bottom. I haven’t put it on product yet, but if it behaves like their other oils, I expect to smell more complexity in the heart notes and bottom when it is diluted and exposed to some heat.

Really, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of their oils!

  10. Sorry, I make my own!

Generally, I have had a good experience with B&B bases from Bramble Berry and RE, and I have ordered the hand sanitizer from BC before. It was good quality, FWIW.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Swell. As if I didn't have enough. Just put in my order.

You won't regret it, their oils are amazing!!

How was the throw for orange you sweet?

I don't have that one, but I just wanted to say that every single oil that I have gotten from them has insanely strong throw with zero morphing - in fact they are so strong that they smell even better diluted in product than they do OOB.

The wick also plays an incredible part in any candle.  Too hot or the wrong material and you will smell “burned” wax and FO. Too small or the wrong type and you won’t get the full impact of the candle.

That video...  where to begin? 🙈

Totally agree, I've only gotten a burned or petrol smell when the wick is way too big, or too small, and of course some citrus FOs will get that terrible fuel smell.

The video.... sweet baby Jesus, 12% FO load??? With that much FO, the neighbors better be able to smell that candle burning!! 😂😂

I wish I had stopped it before he started talking about the hot throw, I was somewhat on board up until that point, it is an interesting discussion anyway. I feel compelled to point out though, the brilliant white of the super pricey (and difficult to work with!) coconut/apricot blend can also be achieved by using a common paraffin blend like 4630 or CBL 125. So, many of the visual charastics of the luxury candles can be achieved by using common materials. Food for thought!

  13. IMO you're not going to see a huge difference between a 8oz jar and a 9oz jar, and not a big difference between a jelly jar and a 8oz straight sided jar. Same material, same wax capacity, close to the same mouth diameter... the burn is going to be very similar.

Expect to see a difference if jumping to a vessel with a significantly wider diameter, like a tureen, or a bigger capacity, like a 16oz straight jar.

Not trying to discourage you, if you're not happy with the jelly, by all means try something different. 🙃 Just set realistic expectations, lol.

That being said, I don't use 464, or CD wicks, so I can't offer specific advice.

That does not look half bad from where i am sitting.  It is clean with little to no carbon build up.

From this view I can’t tell how tall the jar is. The last couple of hours in a glass vessel are the most critical.  Heat builds up and can wreck an otherwise great burn. Very tall jars will be the trickiest to wick since the bottom gets exceedingly hot compared to the top.

If it is throwing Scent well I would not worry all that much about the melt pool. Keep burning that one to the bitter end and see if it catches up. I suspect it will end perfectly.

Every scent will behave differently, though, so don’t be surprised if the next scent is over wicked.

This is sound advice for every wax, and every vessel. You can't  judge the wick on the first, second, or even 5th burn, you really have to observe objectively for the entire duration of the candle. Unless of course it's a bonfire on that first burn. 🔥🔥😂😂

  15. That's great you've had successful batches! 😁 So satisfying, right?

I just turn on the light in my oven while I'm making my soap, and stick my loafs in after I pour them. I used to set it to 175 and turn it off right before I put them in, but for most of my soaps it was was overkill. But I soap pretty warm, around 100 degrees because I use a lot of solid fats, and I generally use full water too. Just having the light on keeps everything nice and warm without being too hot.

I'll pull my molds out after a few hours, and let them sit wrapped in a towel on the counter for another day or so.

    HTH!
