  1. There are quite a few like that, and what you use depends on what type of candle you want to make... Generally, you would be looking for a "pre-blend" wax. Many suppliers have their own pre-blend, but there's also IGI 4625. HTH, and welcome to the board... You'll learn a lot hanging around here and reading...
  2. Ok, I've not been doing this that long, but from what I understand, you have two options: The first is to make your own wick assemblies by using the spool wick in the length that you need (either plain or primed w/ wax) and attaching wick tabs yourself, or Two-- Candlewic will make a wick to your specs, length up to 9 inches, I think. Option 2 sounds easier to me, but I haven't tried either one, so I don't really know. HTH... PS: Happy Birthday!
  3. Boy, do I know what you mean... I've got more than 20 FO's in my garage waiting to be tested, and I already have a list of over 30 more that I want to buy. I just haven't had the time lately, so I've been lucky... This is dangerous!
  4. Unfortunately I have a pretty bad cold right now-- I got one whiff of it trying to figure out how to describe it, and now I can't smell it anymore. I'm sorry for the lack of info... I know it makes it MUCH harder to help me.
  5. There is a scent that I am trying to find, but I need to identify it first... It's a candle that I got at B&BW a few years ago (a pillar), made by White Barn Candle Co. Trouble is, the name of the fragrance is not on the label! This is driving me crazy-- I've tried looking on the B&BW website, searching white barn candle co. on google, etc, but I'm coming up with nothing! I'm going to go to the local B&BW tomorrow to see if I can find it... The candle is a white pillar candle... I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have any ideas? I'll try anything at this point! TIA,
  6. Thanks, Geek, for the info. I agree w/ the idea that i like the cored wicks beacuse the wick stays up (it seems that i don't have to hug pillar while burning). The pillars w/ the square braid wicks I did are all burning unevenly and driving me crazy! Do all cored wicks mushroom?
  7. Hi guys, I'm still pretty new at this, but since my last post I've made 10 candles and am testing them all over my house--fabulous! I'm making pillars and votives with Candlewic's CBL-141 blend (parafin) and they look great and throw really well, both hot and cold. The only problem I'm still having is wicking (surprise, surprise!). After testing with the wicks that came with my Yaley Molds (which I believe to be Medium square braid) and didn't like the way they burned, I ordered 2 sample packs of wicks--first tried the CD (coreless), but I didn't like the way they burned... my melt pool was really small, and when I wicked up, the flame was crazy (and completely dangerous w/ 2 dogs running around the house!). Then I tried Paper Core wicks, and I love the way they burn-- perfect melt pool, good sized flame, good throw, etc. Only problem w/ them is the mushrooming on the top. I'm thinking of ordering another sample pack or two of different wicks, but am unsure of which to try. I've read on this board that the LX wicks are good, but I'm not absolutely sure that they're appropriate for my application (I've read conflicting reviews-- one says that the LX is more for crystal wax or gel candles...) I would love if some of you could share what type of wick you use for parafin pillars and the results you've gotten (i.e. good melt pool, mushrooming, etc.) to point me in the right direction before I spend a decent amount of money on every single type of wick made! TIA,
  8. I poured this last weekend... Great dupe, imo. I have a small bottle of the BBW WVS lotion, and it's the same to me. My throw is a little weak, but I only used approx. 0.5 oz pp, so would just use 1 oz next time. HTH!
  9. I just poured JS Love Spell last night. Incredibly strong throw... I only used .5 oz pp, DH had to go upstairs b/c the smell was so strong and he's got the flu. BTW- I use candelwic's pillar blend paraffin wax. It also smells JUST LIKE the v.s. perfume, and that's what I wear everyday.... Fabulous, imo.
  10. OK, so I got my samples from JS today... first order of fo's! I was expecting to get 13 (my ten samples + 3 free ones, which was cool enough). Well, when I opened the box, there were 18!!! I can't wait to try them all... I think I need more pouring pots and molds (lol)
  11. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I had White vinegar in my kitchen cabinet so I tried that one. I'll go smell then in a little while. Meanwhile, I made DH smell them last night and he said it wasn't bad, just me!! Maybe it's just because I hated the scent!
  12. Hey all, I need some help getting the last remains of a stinky FO out of my pouring pot and molds. I put the stuff in the oven @ 170 for approx. 15 minutes, wiped out VERY well, and they still smell. Does anyone have any ideas for me to try besides purchasing mold cleaner? TIA, Rachel
  13. I just ordered a couple of samples that may qualify, so I'll let you know when I get them...HTH.

  15. So, I just placed my first orders tonight as a newbie-- I ordered the FO samplers from Peaks and JS (and some other miscellaneous stuff from Candles & Supplies). Now, I just can't wait for everything to get here so I can play around!
  16. Thanks to all of you for your responses. I especially like the idea of trying to get some samples to work with, particularly since I'm so new at this. Does anyone know of particular suppliers that offer free/low-cost samples in smaller quantities to try the wax out? Again, thank you all for your thoughtful and timely responses!!
  17. Hi everyone. I am very new to candle making-- I decided to try making some for holiday gifts for my siblings. I just used the basic wax manufactured by Yaley that I found in my local craft store. I really enjoyed making candles, and am ready to make more!!! I've been reading the posts on this board, and am trying to figure out what type of wax to use... Should I bother with the Yaley stuff from the craft store anymore, or is there better stuff out there? I've got molds for 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 (I think!) pillars and votives as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,
