  1. What is the 4786, is it more like 4630 or more like 4627? I've tried to get samples in Australia but igi have said they won't send yo Australia.
  2. I'll let you know how this testing goes; We've just started testing 2 x htp 52 though 93 with nothing but straight wax. From your post, I hear your saying if the melt pool is too much the wick drowns out (So wick down); but if you wick down too far the flame extinguishes itself. (damned if you do, damned if you don't) Is that correct?
  3. Oh that's great news - I bet you are relieved to have finally got there. I'll let you know how I go with the HTP testing. We are currently burning double wicks from 52 to 93 with nothing but straight wax; to get a base line. Now if I could only get some LX wicks locally 8-)
  4. Hey all Just wondering, as I've been having issues getting a proper burn lately; Does letting your candle cure make all that much difference with the burn? I get that it makes a difference with the hot throw, but how much does it actually effect the burn? Any thoughts? I use 4627 paraffin and normally let cure for 2 days, but with all the testing I'm having to do I want to just leave them over night to test the burn.
  5. It sounds to me like noone has successfully wicked the 4627, yet plenty of people must continue to buy it. OMG I never thought it could be this difficult hahaha
  6. Thanks BoogieLuv; The problem here in Australia is we are limited to only 3 wicks. HTP, CDN and some generic cotton with that a supplier refuses to tell us what they are. We are trying to use what we have at our disposal, or it costs a lot of money to import from america, or buy direct from the wicking companies at a minimum of 10,000 wicks per size per order.
  7. Hi ChandlerWicks - We haven't tried a single HTP wick yet. We are really hoping to double wick as we find the mushrooming, soot and self trimming effect works much better. We also find a lot of customers don't bother trimming wicks and compared to other brands here in Australia, this is now the norm here (Not trimming wicks) despite the warning labels saying so. We, as a last resort, will move to a single wick and see how we go. This is going to sounds odd, but we have tried different containers, different waxes and different fragrances and we have never had a candle burn top to bottom (in this house) with the exception of containers we've used that are less than 2" tall. It's got us baffled!
  8. Hi Boogie Luv - No I have to say I"ve done a lot of testing with vybar and it makes no difference with the 4627, except makes the wax shrink slightly. the 4627 produces a great throw when you add the right amount of fragrance; and the correct wick. You, like I, are using a very hard to wick wax (4627). Some fragrances just don't throw well in hot wax. The hot wax actually burns off the scent instead of picks it up and throws it. If it's a light fragrance then it's a light fragrance, and not all light fragrances work in a wax. Our initial marketing was toward men, and male colognes. Most of the nicest male colognes are 'light' fragrances, and they don't always work in wax unfortunately. My suggestion would be, if you love it, sell it as a fragrance that gives a gentle scent. Not all people love the strong scents, some people want a subtle scent. Give it a go; and remember you've been working with the fragrance so there's a good chance that you don't think it's great, but those who haven't been around it all day long or in large doses, will absolutely love it. just my 2c worth anyway
  9. Oh I should mention that the .75 and 1's for for double wicking. Im a huge fan of double wicking because you produce less soot; less mushrooming and the self trimming wicks make for easier maintenance; imho
  10. Yeah I'm not great at wicking as my other posts suggest 8-) But that is what the experts suggested for a 4" diameter. Another great thing I found with the 50/50 mix is it sticks to the jar so much better! I considered it our secret weapon blend until we switched to trying a new blend (for marketing purposes) Can I ask, how deep & wide are your jars that your using for the 4627? and what wicks are you using?
  11. HI all Just an update on this 'situation' 8-) We have decided to do testing with the HTP wicks (As IGI recommend those wicks) by pouring 6 plain candles double wicked from 52 through to 93. We've decided to go back to basics and see if we can eliminate the fragrance as the issue. Will keep you all posted on the progress. I wanted to exhaust the use of HTP before importing LX wicks, as it's a little expensive to bring in wicks to Australia from America (Postage gets you every time!) Thanks again
  12. Boogieluv - that's great news you have the LX wicks working for you! How deep is your jar? Did you ever find your HTP would just get too small of a flame height and stop burning at all?
  13. Hi Boogieluv I've tried 50/50 4627 and 4630. It produces a lovely product. I was using eco .75 and eco 1 in a 4" diameter jar. It keeps the throw of the 4627 but the opacity of the 4630; and it was nice to touch. The problem I had, and am having still with plain 4627 is; the damn things refuse to burn more than half way. I posted something earlier in the week about this. But that 50 50 blend does look nice and when I sent them to wicks unlimited to do test burns they suggested the eco .75 and eco 1.
  14. I started trimming them, and then thought maybe I'm trimming them too much seeing as the wick was running out. I seemed to have more luck the less I trim them
  15. Hi Trappeur The jar is a 3" diameter wide mouth mason jar. I've tried single wicking but the wick soots heaps. I wicked it with a CDN 24, and I get around a 1cm melt pool but constant sooting issues. and it gets extremely hot! hotter than the two HTP 72's If I keep the melt pool to 1cm (3/8") then I wont get much hot throw will I? I've always read that you aim for 1" The wax is 75% 4627 with 25% natural wax. Are you suggesting that the too big of a wicking it causing the drowning, or are you saying that in general that is too high? Thanks again, people on this board are so helpful!
  16. oh ok - so tempering doesn't add any more burn characteristics or anything like that? I shouldn't bother with my paraffin / natural wax blend?
  17. Wow thanks everyone for the reply. I didn't get an email telling me there were replies so I've just thought to jump on now and check. Yeah it's definitely only 1/2". The picture is very deceiving. It's a mason jar, pint wide mouth. So this is not a drowning wick then? I don't understand why it's going out half way down then. \ I'm using 4627 with 25% natural wax. I read that 4627 you always have to wick up, and given it's a 3" diameter and a HTP 52 renders a 1.5 inch pool, I tried wicking up and started testing from 62 through to 82. They all die out half way down.
  18. Hi all - I have a consistent problem with a few fragrances. I've been reading some help guides but not sure what is considered a drowning wick. There is one scenario where it says it's consuming too much wax so wick down, and another where it says it's drowning so wick up. How do I tell, Is this considered a drowning wick? This fragrance is orange and goji berry. It is running 2 x HTP 73's. The melt pool is half an inch in this picture. It burnt great, with a melt pool over an inch when we first lit it. Now just under half way it's died out. I get the same issue with Vanilla, Leather and Sandlewood and the French Pear. All do the same, just at different points. The coconut and lime seemed to burn fine, it was perfect with 2 X HTP 72s
  19. Hi all I was just doing some reading and stumbled across a post on tempering soy wax. It didn't mention the benefits and whether or not you should temper paraffin. Can someone tell me what the benefits of tempering the wax, and can you temper paraffin. Particularly IGI 4627?
  20. OK definitely sounds like I need to go down a bit on the FO load. I use %8 of french pear and it stops burning too, but a lot lower down. The coconut and lime goes all the way. I suspect it's the vanilin content (the thick stuff). So maybe i'll start by wicking down on the problematic onces. Who make the premier? I don't have access to those in Australia, so might have to find a website that ships to Australia; which very few do.
  21. Yeah the wick does have a high neck on it, but it's not getting close to the end of the neck. It is an inch off the neck (at least), so in effect it's actually stopping 2 inches or more from the bottom. I have actually switched to a CDN 24 to see how that performs; just for testing really. I don't like the amount of soot a single large wick throws off, and I also noticed that the CDN24 doesn't give a big enough melt pool so would need to go up 2 sizes before it would perform. This would then generate more smoke which I'm keen to avoid. I know to trim, but customers don't and I'm trying to find a happy medium. I'm getting a great hot and cold throw on that blend, it's actually performing very well. I don't have access to LX wicks or CD wicks in Australia. The best I can do is CDN, ECO and HTP. Even the Eco I've had to have someone ship me from the US, but I found they were smoking and sooting and falling over into the wax a lot. They also died out sooner than the HTP. IGI recommend the HTP, and can see why because some fragrances work well with that wick. Is there much difference between CD and CDN, and whats your thoughts around the LX? Thanks Steve, appreciate the help and the welcome!
  22. That's great I haven't thought of that. I do get a 1 inch melt pool; but that soon becomes 1/2 inch then soon 1/4 inch; then the thing dies out. That's on the vanilla (which is very thick), but I have a coconut and lime and it gets, on the first burn, over 1 inch then it levels out and has a good melt pool the rest of the way down. (2-3 burns in) I've tried 2 x htp 72, 73, 83, 93; and they all perform almost the same, but have noticed the 83 goes the longest (not 93 oddly enough). I've just poored and tested a single wick (CDN 24) to see if that performs the same. I've run out of fragrance and waiting on the new load to come so I can test 2 x CDN 10/12 in the vanilla.
  23. Hi - I have a similar issue and I'm using the 4627. I find with this wax you always need to wick up. It highly depends on the fragrance you are using and also the height of the jar seems to make a big difference also. I found the HTP works best for me in this wax. Couple of questions; 1 - What is the height of each container 2 - What fragrance are you using 3 - Are you using single or double wick 4 - What size wick are you using
  24. That's great thanks Vicky! I guess my concern is if we go up in size then the jar is going to get extremely hot. Would you expect normally 2 x HTP93 in a 3" jar is normal? Also, you say there is less oxygen down the bottom of the jar; is this suggesting further that we need to go up a size or are you saying the jar itself will be a problem that cannot be resolved? Thanks so much. We've actually been at this for months now, and whilst we enjoy the challenge we are finding it a lot more experimental than we first imagined 8-)
  25. Hi all. I'm new to this board. My fiancé and I have started making candles. We are using 1 pint wide mouth mason jars. We are using 4627 with 25% natural wax and %8 fragrance. I have used both eco wicks and HTP wicks. We are finding that the candles stop burning 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches from the bottom for a light fragrance (coconut and lime) and stops burning as little as half way down with a vanilla. The jars are around 4 1/2 inches tall by just over 3 wide. I have doubled wicked with up to 2x HTP73 In the light fragrance and 2x HTP93 with the vanilla. I've also used eco and double wicked up to 2x ECO1.5. I found the Eco's stopped Sooner than the HTP. The flame becomes lazy and small and eventually just burns the wick down to 1mm and all but dies. I've tried using a different wax, straight 6006a, and found the same thing. I find it hard to believe that I need to go higher than 2xHTP73 for any fragrance. Can anyone possibly give some guidance? It would be so much appreciated.
