se2653
I am experimenting with palm wax, and for some reason I am having trouble getting my double boiler (using a double boiler as I am still new to this hobby and making small batches of candles) to get up to 210 degrees. It will get up to 200, and I've waited, waited, and did go ahead and put in the dye and fo, stirred and poured around 190-195 degrees. They look really good, love the crystallization pattern, and now I'll cure for a week before I test the HT. Do I need to get the temp up to 210 (I saw that on the instructions), does it matter?, and also should I stir the fo in for 2 minutes like I do with my para soy? TIA for any advice from all of you experts!
Beth
You'll know after you test them I had the same issue; I just took it as high as I could. Usually I could get it to 205° & it was fine.
pcbrook
I think you should be safe at 200 degrees.
se2653
Thanks so much! I just kept waiting, adding more water to the double boiler, and I couldn't get it higher. I'll know more after they cure and test the HT.
Candybee
You don't have to get your wax to 210 degrees F. I usually heat around 195-205, add my scent and dye and pour at 195-200. Get good crystal patterns at these temps as long as my containers are spaced and set on a rack for all around air flow.
se2653
Do you stir in the fo for a couple of minutes before pouring?
Candybee
Do you stir in the fo for a couple of minutes before pouring? You have to make sure your dye and scent is thoroughly blended in the wax before you pour.
pcbrook
Do you stir in the fo for a couple of minutes before pouring?I stir for at least 2 minutes to make sure everything is blended well. I even use a timer so I can't cheat!
Taras12
I'm very new to candlemaking (just joined this forum), but raising the temperature in your double boiler is easy. I live in Montana and plain water boils well below 212F. To raise the temperature, just add plain table salt until you get the appropriate temperature increase.
