What to do with lye

I moved this weekend, and found a couple 1lb containers of lye that I never got around to using. I won't be making soap for awhile since I currently don't have a good space for it, so I'm wondering what to do now with this lye! I'd rather not have it sitting around until I move again. It's got to be a few years old- does it go bad? If so, what's a good way to know? I didn't open the containers yet, but shook them a little and they are not solid or anything. I would be happy to give them away if they are still good. Otherwise, can I just wrap up in a couple garbage bags and throw in the regular trash?

Sorry for the dumb questions! :)

You could check with your local waste management and ask them. Our waste management company just had a special day where things like chemicals, paint, batteries, etc. could be taken and dropped off. Yours may have something like this as well.
