soy1226
Hi! I’m pretty new to candle making and am just doing it for fun at the moment, but am testing a lot to possibly make Christmas gifts for family and friends (the thought of just microwaving some wax, mixing it with fragrance and giving it to people seems irresponsible considering it could potentially burn someone’s house down, so I’m trying to give them a really good quality candle). Selling could be in the future if I continue to enjoy it the way I do now, but we shall see. Anyway, I’m using 100% soy wax (464 from amazon), and bought a random pack of holiday fragrances to test. They smell fine, but could be better. My main question is: does anyone make their own FO or essential oils for their candles? And if so, do you have any tips? I currently have some vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks sitting in jars of safflower oil to test out in a couple week when they’re ready, but I’m worried the scent will be weak once added to the wax, but love the idea of making everything from scratch. Am I crazy? Should I just buy the oils?
bfroberts
Buy fragrance oils from a reputable supplier. Anything you make is going to be ineffective at best. Potentially even dangerous.
TallTayl
Stick with products specifically engineered and tested for lighting on fire. little story. A patron shopped with me summer 2017 saying her Christmas candles were a bust. She used vanilla extract to scent them. Yikes. Fire and alcohol do not mix.
soy1226
Thanks guys! I think I found a company I like for oils, so I ordered some samples. Will not use my own oils lol.
Pam W
I've never found essential oils to work well in candles.....I save those for lotions. there are several companies that have quality oils made specifically for candles: Candle Science, Rustic Essentials, Lone Star, Natures Garden, Brambleberry, Oregon Trails -- I purchase FOs from all these companies and have never been disappointed in the quality of their oils OR their service.
