I have a recipe that calls for a 3# can of shortening. What can I substitute for this? The reason why is I can't enter it into the MMS calculator.I am new at this, and so dumb to all of this.I have read and read some more trying to learn this. And I thought candles was hard.

Thanks,Anna

I think there are 2 things you can do to just stick with the shortening. First is look at the back of the it and it will tell you what type of oil the shortening is made of, then put that oil in the calculator. The other thing is use a different calculator. Here is one that has shortening as a choice.

I think these guys run a little heavy on the water if I remember right. I usually use about 2 or three calculators and pick a mid range of the recommended water and lye amounts.

Hope this helps:smiley2:

Try this calculator too http://www.soapcalc.com/calc/SoapCalc.asp

I've used MMS choosing LARD and just using that for my shortening amount. Haven't had problems doing that, however I do try to use the one above when choosing shortening

Thank you,I over looks it on soapcalc site.I was looking for the word shortening, not crisco. Thanks to every one for their help.
