Self. Trimming wicks

I really dont understand the self trim process. At what point does the wick self trim? After re lightning? I want to trim the wick but it has a small ball on the side. I am testing LX wicks.

They trim as they burn but I'm neurotic about wicks so I trim them before relighting a candle.  I haven't used LX in a long time, not sure about the ball?  Maybe

that forms before it burns off.  I'm sure someone will answer about that.  I've probably had that on other types of self trimmers just haven't noticed it as I don't

watch them burn anymore.
