soap_nut
I'd like to try a stab at making some chamomile soap but the EO is really expensive. I've seen mention of doing either a chamomile tea in place of water or an oil infusion using chamomile tea. Do any of you do this? Any guidance on how to figure out how many tea bags to use? In reading about it, it sounds like it's a toss up between the two methods and I haven't really seen a majority pick one way over another. Guest OldGlory
I infused about a cup of chamomile (the dried herb) in the olive oil before adding the oil to the soap.Just allow it to set for a week or so, and then strain it. Not sure what the actual benefit is.
Shar
I agree with Old Glory, and I like to brew some tea bags also to use for my liquid. You can add the lye to the brewed tea after it cools. Usually turns my soap greenish brown.
Candybee
I do both tea and oil infusions. Depends on the herb I am using. Don't know if you are also trying for a scented chamomile but neither infusion or tea will be enough to scent the soap.
Sonoma Roses
I have a quart of infused chamomile olive oil, but use it in small amounts because I have read that individuals who are allergic to rag weed, or flowers in the daisy family may be allergic to chamomile. I need to do more research, but this is a concern for me, since I definately don't want to make soap that has any negative side effects. I use lavender flowers in my lavender oatmeal soap and although the flowers smell wonderful it isn't as strong as the EO. Thanks for letting me know Candybee. That is really good to know! I'll have to look into that more. Thanks!
