QTsmum
So I made a fairly sizeable batch of a new hot apple pie scent. I don't usually make a hefty batch without testing it first but it's a popular oil and I thought it'd be ok! D'oh!! I could have mis-measured the the oil, I'm not sure. Something went wrong! The CT is great, almost NIL HT unless you sniff over the bowl. Can I remelt it to past the flashpoint to burn off the FO and then add it again at a lower temp or would this be pointless? I wouldn't sell that batch to the public but it's an awful lot to turn into fire starters!!! I would dole them out to my MIL/Sister/Friends and use them myself if it ended up ok. I know it would be obvious if there was too much FO, as it would just settle to the bottom of the pour pot. If that's odd, I'll just turn it into fire starters. I do need to make more anyways and heck, the CT would make them a good sell! My quest to find a fabulous apple scent is a tough one.
David Fields
My advice would be to toss the batch or use it as firestarters. You always test new scents. Many scent mfg's and distributors design or weaken the scents to produce maximum profit. The longer you are pouring, the more often you run across this. The cold throw will be there to sell you and your customers the first time but the hot throw and lingering throw will not; this maximizes profit for them at your expense. Then you will think exactly what you are thinking "what did I do wrong". Some scents are light no matter what. But others are diluted or formulated to be weaker from the start to max profit. Again, text....test....test. I actually had a rep from a distributor tell me they cut some of their scents to reach their price point. justajesuschick
I agree with David.I make a batch of 4 test melts for each new FO that I receive. Sounds as if you usually do as well just happened not to on this one.I accidentally have 10 apple scents in my line (I had no idea I liked spiced apple scents so much!). My 2 favorites are NG Apple Dumpling and RE/AH Baked Apple. SUPER strong. I cannot remember what wax you use, but my reference is concerning melts made with a paraffin blend. QTsmum
Yep, I usually make only a few of a new scent and test/send out to testers. I was in the zone and making a million and just had at it! That'll teach me! LOLI do use paraffin! I think I have both hot baked and dumpling! So far I like dumpling the best!! I actually almost didnt pour it because it wasn't fantastic OOB, but I'm so glad I did! It almost wasn't very apple from the bottle!!It's pretty close to what I'm looking for. I just want a bit of a Granny Smith apple (a good tart apple without being that cheap apple scent) with they perfect spices. I might have to Bland my own when I have some time and need to place another order? Edited October 17, 2013 by QTsmum
EricofAZ
Well, I guess the question is how to salvage it. I would not heat to flash point as that's pretty high, but I might heat it back up and stir a lot and let it stay liquid for a few hours. You won't be able to purge it. I might also consider adding something to it to "blend" your own "limited edition" scent. Marketing is sometimes a challenge. You could market it as a nice smelling candle in the package with no scent during the burn. Some folks don't like scented burns. Tapers might lend well to that. Some folks don't want their taper to have much of a smell to them but do like something nice out of the package. Does the wax work with a taper shape and not drip? You might have a tough time wicking and may need a bobeche. But the firestarter idea is pretty good, even if you do have a huge quantity this year. QTsmum
I make melts, this wax is definitely too soft to hold shape. I did try to re-add some oil just for kicks to see what would happen and it's the same. Ah well. Tis the season for fire starters! LOL! I needed to make some more anyways. I'll have some brown sugar and fig and some apple pie ones! Maybe I'll grab some pinecones, make them cute and market them as room scenting fire starters.
