  1. Okay tomorrow I'm going to try my hand at my very first candles. While I'm trying to soak in all the info I can...I have read a ton and don't remember anything about the pour pot.

I have a melting pour pot I bought from HB. Can I put this directly onto the stove to melt the wax?? Or do I really need to use the double boiler method?

  2. OK - throwin' ya three good suppliers... there are MANY, MANY others including the one that sponsors this site, Peak (CO)

Mill Creek is in IN http://www.mcsoywax.com/

    Nucents is in IL http://www.nuscentscandle.com/

Nature's Garden is in OH http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/

It doesn't usually take a week to get supplies from any of the major suppliers I have used... If you need something remember to order early in the day so hopefully your order will be processed the same day. Understand that we are in candle making season right now and the closer it gets to Christmas, the more backed up the suppliers get, so give them lead time to get your stuff to you. If you only need a small amount of little stuff, look for USPS flat rate shipping or Priority mail to save shipping bucks. Once you have been here a certain length of time, the classifieds will be available to you and you can get some great deals from other members there. Good luck!

Stella you are such a big help and so knowledgeable about everything!! Thank you so much for all your help. I'm certain I will have more silly newbie questions to come lol

  3. I used Yaley Premium for several years. I only stopped because shipping became so expensive from California. I now use IGI 4625 which is similar but shipping is 1/2 the price. We used to have to get Yaley from our local stores with 1/2 off coupons. I still remember when it was $40 for a 10 pound block. I was very satisfied with Yaley Premium. I get my wax now shipped from Tennesse for $2 a pound including shipping. It is about a 2 day turnaround from order to my front door. There is nothing wrong with Yaley Premium and I would recommend it. I usually added Vybar to get the finish I wanted. I do the same with IGI 4625. I am very happy with both and still order other supplies from Yaley. They have been around since the hippies started burning candles. They are well known. I actually called IGI and found my supplier through them in Tennessee now. If Yaley was only 2 states away, I might still be using them. I still have candles I made two years ago in plastic bags that are still beautiful and still hold the fragrance as if they were made yesterday.

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm sure since I'm new to this I will be trying out several different types of waxes :)

  4. Where are you at in Indiana? You can pick suppliers closest to you to save on the shipping. & you can buy wax in very small amounts to start out, until you find one you're happy with.

I've been here for a month.... & the general consensus is, in my opinion, don't buy your candle supplies at craft/hobby stores. Stick with the suppliers that everyone here uses. Candlescience, for instance, seems to ship pretty quick. It shouldn't take you a week to get wax.

I'm in Southern Indiana about 20 miles from Louisville, KY.

I do agree with you about the wax and buying from well known suppliers. Just to be on the safe side.

  5. Craft stores, for the most part, do NOT carry high quality candle making supplies. That's why most folks use candle making suppliers.

I kinda figured as much. It such a shame. Especially if you really needed supplies and had to wait a week for shipping. It's just a pain in the rear having to order the wax online. I bought silicone molds ( tarts, votives, and some christmas themed ones) and only have soy wax right now. And from what I have been reading here on the forums, soy wax will not work in molds, only containers. So I'm not on the search from pillar wax for the molds. I haven't even broken anything out yet!! I'm too nervous......and I'm unfortunately......one of those people who always always dive in feet first. Hope all works well with this new investment of mine. Hubby would freak lol

  6. hello fellow "WAX DRIP" LOL I am new to this also, If you go back out to the disscusion board under general candle making disscusion there is a post in red titled supplier by state and in IN the is 12 suppliers maybe those sites can help you with little shipping cost...Wow Im in Illinois and I miss Ben Franklins..lol

:) Isn't is exciting and a tad frustrating trying to soak up everything lol. I have been to the suppliers by state...by honestly haven't had a whole lot of luck. I did find the one site that wasn't too bad but it still seems soo steep to me. Is there no Ben Franklins in Illinois?? I wonder about Hobby Lobby?? Maybe they have some pillar wax. I know they sell the soy wax there

  7. Hi everyone. As most of you know I'm a newbie here and have been asking lots of silly questions. But that's the best way for one to learn, is asking questions.

Ben Franklins craft store sells pillar wax. It doesn't say anything about the wax...just that the manufacturer is Yaley...and that it is Premium Candle wax. Does anyone know if this is good wax?? I have been looking for a place local to buy wax without having to pay shipping costs.

  8. PLEASE search the veggie wax forum for how to use 415 before you begin. 415 is a soft, container formula. It is not suitable for tarts unless one uses additives to harden it up so it'll come out of the mold. Try a 4 oz. JJ to start using 1 oz. FO PP. Try a CD 8 in it. As for temps, many folks pour 415 at very low temp - slushy. Heat to 160°F & add warmed FO & dye, then stir down to the slushy point to pour.

Stella thanks for the info!!! I had no clue you couldn't use it for tarts. That's one thing I was really looking forward to making was tarts! Could you please please recommend a wax to me, that is suitable for beginners that works wonderfully with tart making?

Also I honestly don't know what PP or CD8 is lol...sorry newbie! :)

  9. The finished, orange pumpkins are made with orange dyed wax and the faces were painted on.

The monkey mold is made with two waxes. First, the tan colored wax is poured into the mold to fill the mouth and eye area cavity. That wax cools. Then brown dyed wax is poured in until the point the ears start. The brown was cools. Then a drop of wax is poured into the two ear cavities in tan colored wax, cool. Finally, finish pouring the rest of the mold with brown wax. The eye accents are most likely painted on.

I do love the way they look!! It just seems to me like it would be so much easier to paint the little details instead of mixing all those different colors of wax. I would surely screw something up!! lol

  10. That's the kit I started with. One thing I can tell you; take those directions with a grain of salt. The first two batches I made, two 8oz candles in each, and even after a month, they have no scent throw. I've made some since with her wax and fragrance, adding the fragrance at a much higher temp, and they turned out much better! I almost gave up after those first two batches, but I decided to order some wax and FO from Candle Science, and I'm so glad I did. I'm still very new...just a month in, but I've already learned so much in here and my candles are coming out much, much better, with great HT if I can be patient enough to let them sit for at least a week, lol. :-)

I go the kit in the mail today. The soy wax is 415. As my name states, I'm really totally cluess as to what I'm doing here lol. The instructions that were provided with the kit are pretty bad. Very minimal and not very helpful at all. I'm assuming I will be doing best to get online and look up some you tube videos. Since you mentioned the candles not having a good scent throw I will definitely add in the FO at a higher temp. Should I start with making a tart using a mold?? or start with a container candle? Which one is the easiest. I will be certain to keep all informed on how this all turns out btw lol. Wish me much luck...I'm sure I'm gonna need it!!!

  11. What kit did you order, can you post a link? I'm still working on deciding which one to get!

This is the one I bought. But I only bought the 10lb wax kit because I want to make sure I can do it and not waste too much money on it lol. But I looked around and this looked like the best one :) I know I'm super excited!!

  12. Ok so I'm super excited! I bought my first soy wax candle kit yesterday, but I wont receive it for a few days since I ordered it online. I have been reading a little and thought the soy wax would be a good first choice for a beginner like myself, considering I haven't a clue lol.

I also went ahead and purchased some nice molds. I can't wait to dig and get started! I crochet for a living and really want to add something different! So I'm crossing my fingers that I'm able to make something pretty that smells nice.

Would anyone like give any advice for a beginner? Anything important I need to know? Thanks a million everyone :)

  13. Hi everyone! I'm completely new here. And I hope you all don't mind me joining and asking silly newbie questions. I'm new to candle making/ tart making.

I keep seeing these tarts that have been from a silicone mold. Let's say a candy cane just for an example. How are they coloring these candy canes red and white and green? Are they painting them???

LoL!! Sorry, It's been driving me nuts. I have been all over google trying to figure it out and have gotten zilch.

So are they painted or what??
