  1. I use a canning jar "ring" - you can get them at Walmart cheap. You can also find a themometer at Walmart that is metal, flat, and is made where you can't put the bottom of the actual themometer on the bottom of the pan - and it has a handy clip that is adjustable so you can use it on any pan. Until you are to where you want an instant read (expensive) this is a really good choice, or was for me (cheap).

Thanks for the advice! I canning ring sounds perfect. I just ate some tuna salad and was going to use the can from the tuna haha. But the canning ring sounds alot better. I have one of those glass candy thermometers. But I'm going to try and get something digital soon because I have a hard time reading the others.

  2. Thanks everyone! I feel much better!!

But...I must confess this.....when I melted my soy wax last night, I did not put something in my pot while do the double boiler method. I just put some water in a large pot and then sat my pyrex glass filled with wax in that. So the glass was directly in the water....is this bad??

  3. All it says is Paraffin wax and low oil content. Which I'm not entirely sure what that means. Melt point is 133-135. I picked it up at HB. I know I know....I should always purchase from well know suppliers for a good quality, But I just wanted to try it :)

So unfortunately that's all the info I have on it. I just don't want to blow up or anything. Has anyone ever reached the flash point??? Scary!!!!

  4. You are at the right place clueless :). You'll get lots of help here all for the searching and asking:) I pointed out your choice of jar only trying to be helpful and to save you from lots of testing grief. Sorry if it didn't come across that way.

I'm totally addicted to this forum already and am so thankful for all the info here and everyone willing to share advice.

I do not take any advice the wrong way. It's a learning process and I'm open to all advice.

I did not take your response the wrong at all. No worries :)

Don't be surprised if you see my posting photos of candles in soda or beer cans LOL

I want to use all sorts of things and just soak in all the info I can!!

  5. I agree with Sliver and Iwantitgreen. The jars are adorable but I am afraid you will become frustrated and give up. Go ahead and try them but I would suggest you also try some type of plain jelly jar so that you can get a sense of how those wick as well. IMO, you will learn more about wicking from the jelly jar than the other jar, cute as it is. Not everyone has to agree with me, its just my opinion.

I'm definitely going to try different types of jars and containers. This is just the first one I tried out because it's what I purchase. And I didn't know which ones were best.

  6. Look at how cute these soaps are!! I have been browsing around on Etsy looking at candles and soaps, bath bombs and lathers! All things that smell good lol. And stumbled across these. These are soaps!! I wonder how in the world she did this? I never understood all the details and colors one can give to soap and candles...it really does amaze me!

I just wanted to share. whoever made these did an awesome job!!!

  7. I'm only about a month in, and it's so addicting! I love making the candles and burning them. It's fun and exciting, especially when they turn out great! Keep up the great attitude! :-)

It was my first time last night and it is so much fun! I was giddy the whole time. And the first thing I did this morning was check and smell my candle and tarts lol. I will definitely have a great attitude along the way!

  8. Let's see how things go with the burn before we start directing people to a different container. I don't agree fully with your remarks about what constitutes the "easiest" container to wick, nor your assessment of what will happen with this container. This one does appear to be pretty squat, with a diameter measurement that exceeds that of the height - not an ideal scenario. I do not know what wick type/size was used in this container so it's hard to predict.

I DO hope when clueless begins testing this candle, it's posted in the Veggie Wax discussion forum where most veggie wax people read and can offer their observations.

Stella I will definitely post in the Veggie section when I do my test burn to let everyone know how it turns out. The worse thing that could happen is that it doesn't burn properly, but hey, I'm learning! Never know, this jar may work well. Either way, I'm having a blast!!!

  9. Look great! That said, I would like to direct you to a different jar. The easiest jars to start with are ones that are taller than they are wide. I would recommend a standard jelly jar for starters. The jar you choose makes wonderful wickless jars. Those are jars that go on warming plates.

Why isn't that a good jar? Soy burns down, then out. I myself have pour wax in this jar and this is what happens. You will need a larger size wick in that jar in order for the MP to reach the edges. By the time the melt pool (MP) gets to the edges of the jar the whole jar of remaining wax is melted. (That means the depth of the melt pool is way to deep, but because the jar is so wide you need such a large wick). When the whole jar is filled with molten wax, your wick pretty much can go whereever it wants. I do realize that it's not that tall, but it could very easily flop over into the wax and extinguish itself.

The jar pictured is an 8 oz jar, they do make a 16 oz jar that would work better because it's taller. HTH's! Wasn't trying to be nit-picky :)

All I bought was the small wide jars, but I'm sure I can find something taller to use tonight. I didn't know anything about that. But I have my fingers crossed for a nice burn when I do light it up. It's so hard waiting for it to cure!! It smells so yummy in the container.

  10. They are so cute! Where did you get the fruit loops FO? And how long are you planning to let them cure before testing?

I purchase the candle kit from rustic scents on ebay so fruit loops was one that I chose. I tell you, it truly smells just like a real fruit loop!! I was drooling the whole time. Made me want to run out and grab a box lol. I plan on letting it sit for atleast 3 days before I test it.

  11. Okay so I took the plunge!!! I gave my hand at candle making for the first time tonight! I was so excited and even more excited to see the end result. I used soy wax 415 with fruit loops FO (it smells absolutely amazing!!!) and an 8oz jar.

To melt my wax I used a the pyrex measuring cup and placed it in a pan with water. This worked very well! Kept check on temps and poured the 8oz jar and then did some little tarts. I also made a votive with the leftover wax but there wasn't enough to fill to the top.

The top of my 8oz jar is so smooth and pretty. I didn't even have to do a repour!!! The tarts turned out just perfect as well. Not too soft at all. I did use a little stearic acid about a tsp?

The only thing that bummed me out was the color. I used dye chips and followed directions. The color was supposed to be a sky blue but it turned out like a mint green. So I'm guessing I need alot more dye chips or need to invest in some liquid dye. I know it's not much but I'm thrilled with the results. Please let me know what you think. Tomorrow evening I'm going to try paraffin wax!!post-14009-13945848691_thumb.jpg

  12. post-14009-139458486897_thumb.jpg

Okay so I have been writing here in the forums for about a week. But I have been writing over in the candle making sections. I'm a newbie here and love all things that smell good. I'm giving my hand at candles tonight...but since I had a little spare time I figured I would try this little soap kit out. I have never ever attempted to make a soap so these are my firsts. Please any advice would be lovely. The clear isn't as clear as I would like it to be, and it has swirls and bubbles in it. Even with spraying it with alcohol. The shells turned out pretty and clear with a light tint of blue.
