  1. I'm looking for any site that can give instructions on how to make candles with your hand instead of using molds. Somewhat like sculpting. I'd appreciate it if you guys could give a link or something! I'm talking really weird looking candles here! Thanks in advance for any help! Dan
  2. Is there such thing? I have a customer asking me to make her 10 candles with a johnny walker whiskey fragrance? And if there is where can I get it. Dan
  3. Well, success!! I made my first batch of soap this past Saturday night! Everything went smoothly I guess I didn't confront any problems and identifying trace wasn't that difficult. I didn't have any pics uploaded yet to my computer so sorry bout that will hopefully post some pics tomorrow. I wanted to make this first batch to kindda get the feel on how soap is made. I have to say it was pretty cool and I feel like I could get into it in a bigger scale soon...I will make a few other small batches and we'll see from there...So guys thanks to all who gave advice! All made sense at the time of getting to make soap! Dan
  4. Cheaper product? Well I for one use them because I hate using that putty all the time. I guess if the tab at the bottom is any danger you could put a shorter (1/4"?) wick and melt a bit of wax on the bottom and seal the wick in...
  5. Well I'm seeing various explanations. Wick pin goes inside the mold or outside?? I'm using 3"X9" seamless alum. molds
  6. Nope I didn't. Are you supposed to use it? Because I didn't used to put anything there and it wouldn't leak if that's just the problem well I can just solve it...Man now I feel really stupid Dan
  7. OK I was going to make a candle today and for some reason my wick pins let all the wax come out...I had actually finished cleaning them. What gives?? Everything is like the first day I got them pins and molds. Dan
  8. I would like to second that. I received the book today and although I haven't made soap yet I think it's great info and very simple easy to understand. Dan
  9. I did that but it doesn't give me the option to print/view the recipe...
  10. Well actually I got some rooter %100 lye in 1 pound containers. I bought 3 of those for like $4.00 each. As for the oils I got Crisco shortening, olive oil from the supermarket and coconut from a health food(Damn it is expensive in small quantities almost a dollar the oz) I haven't made my first batch yet I'm still gathering some stuff I still need a stick blender and an appropriate container to mix it all in. The good thing is that if I decide to go into soaping I have a local supplier of oils specifically for soapers. They sell by 7 pound gallons and 50 pound pails if I'm not mistaken. The coconut oil they have is way cheaper than the one bought at the health store. Here where I live (PuertoRico) there are tons of soapers. There's a lot of people making soap of all kinds and stuff but unfortunately most of them won't really share any info at all for the obvious reason I guess. But nonetheless I will make soap! Dan
  11. How do you make it work on your pc while offline?
  12. So in definition everybody that states that they make organic soap is pretty much stretching the truth? That's pretty much why asked I mean there's a chemical process involved which changes the properties of what was an organic product I guess.. Could this term actually be used to describe a soap that has no foreign stuff in the materials used? Or it would still be misleading? I mean you are using organic oils which are not supposed to be adulterated with any other ingredients or chemicals. "sigh" Semantics? Dan
  13. Ok what makes a soap organic? Is it using organic oils in it instead of say super market bought oils? Or is there more to the process than just the oils? I'm asking because there's somebody that claims they're teaching organic soap making classes locally. And wondered if there was anything different about the process. Or is it just a promo pitch? Dan
  14. HA! I live in Puerto Rico it's never humid and hot in here! Dan
  15. I'm seeing a few bars that are sweating a clear stuff (glycerin?) how can I stop this? I'm using white base from a local supplier. Is this a bad batch of base?? Dan
  16. Where can I get the UV dyes? I had some on order but till today I have cancelled the order. So I have to order somewhere else....Any sugestions?? Dan
  17. Hello everyone, I want to make black light reflective candles. I know there's a dye or pigment that are neon colored and black light reactive. But it's advised that a minimal amount of it is used since it can clog wicks. Does anyone here has experience with these types of candles or pigments? I also saw that there is granulated wax in neon color at Candlewic. They state it can be used to make pillars if melted...but I'm not sure what to try first. I'd love it if anyone could post pictures or info. Thanks in advance!! Dan
  18. Ok I found some 16oz Lye container locally. Actually Im surprised that I found it! So no 50 pound bag just yet...I have olive oil on hand and Crisco shortening too. Still need coconut oil but I know where I can get it locally it will be a bit expensive though... The recipe I have is for 8 pounds. If I cut 50% of everything will it work? 8 pounds of soap is a lot to loose I guess for your first batch. Dan
  19. Thanks everyone for the replies! Well I know that the materials might seem like a lot but right now really I'm unemployed and this is more necessary than just a hobby. And also I feel tired of being on the wrong side of business by always being an employee and not a business owner. So all of this is more of a transition rather than a test or something. I've always been a maker and I love learning everything that I can, useful and not so useful. So on that note! I saw a while ago a formula that described how much soap you could put in a mold according to its dimensions or how big the mold should be to hold X amount of soap in it. Does anybody know what that formula is?? Hopefully I'll start making them molds soon too. Dan
  20. Guys thanks for the replies! loulougirl,Yes it it absolutly a lot of lye. As of now that is what I have found. I have to look further at the hardware stores and see if there's something smaller in the mean time....if not I'll just have to make a lot of soap : ) I already make melt and pour soap (mostly my wife which we sell) But I want to offer somethng that is more of my creation and probably expand that into a bigger bussiness later on and hopefully not that far in thr future. Right now i'm mostly limited to the amount of molds to pour soap as I have none for lye soap...I will be making them pretty soon. Guys keep the sugestions coming! Dan
  21. Hello everyone! Ok I've been reading a lot on how to make soap with lye and have found a local supply of lye in 50 lbs bags. This will be my first batch of soap so I have a couple of questions before I get into it. First of all, on what kind of container I can store at least 25 pound of lye? I will be splitting the 50 pounds with somebody else. Ok about the oils. Since this is my first batch of soap I read somewhere that some store bought oils can work. What do I have to look for with these oils. I plan on buying Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil(will probably order) and or Crisco shortening, I also have on hand Grape seed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil by the gallon. I would like to use these on my recipes too. Finally can you guys direct me to a few sites that have some simple recipes to start out that include the before mentioned oils? I have a few simple recipes that are recommended to start out with CP soap but I would like to see more if possible. Guys thanks in advanced for your help I think I will be asking a lot of question from here on! So any tips one advice or sugestions before starting out I appreciate. Dan
  22. Man I can just imagine a giant pillar made with something like this! I've been meaning to try this for some time now will have to soon...
  23. Wow that's really cool! I have to try that for sure. thanks for the reply! That candle looks very nice too...Ill post when I have something that isnt an eyesore to look at ! Dan
