  1. I've never thought of putting it in candles.. I use it for cooking from time to time (sugar cookies arent the same without it!), and I know its an ingredient in bubble bars.. what its used for in that purpose is to stabilize and prolong the foaming caused by the SLSA. but I dont know how it would affect a candle. My main question would be how to incorporate it, its a powder so it would take alot of blending I would think.
  2. This thread helped me alot: http://www.craftserver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18739&page=18 (18 has the tempering instructions from Jason of Golden Brands) but the whole thread is a great help.
  3. nope... its just the wood pieces wrapped in shrink wrap plastic, no extra packaging I believe the wood pieces are not too wide but they are an inch or so too long. I plugged all the info into USPS and it came back that it would be $16.77 for parcel post, it counts as a "large package" because it is over 12" long. That makes it cost almost $40 with shipping so yeah... kinda expensive.
  4. yep... heres the shipping size... it is just a tad too big for the flat rates, and all three are the same size in the packaging. Article number:50073305 Width:10 3/8" Height:3 1/2" Length:14 1/8" Weight:10lb
  5. I live about 45 min from an IKEA, I have a version of this, where the bottom two are slab drawers and top three are the cubbies. It was a pain in the behind to put together.. it wasnt cut right at the factory I think, so we had to sand it down a bit and mess with it.. but once we got it put together its a nice solid piece. this is the one I have.. its 14.99 currently (I know we paid less for it back then..) The inside dimensions of the small drawes are just shy of 4" wide, just shy of 2.5" tall, and just shy of 9" long. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50073305 Here is the one originally posted: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80073304 Its 19.99... and I can only imagine how annoying it would be to put together... but maybe worth it. There is also one that is three slabs, which I think would be useful to anyone who likes pouring slabs! http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60073300 Until I read this post.. I never even considered using it as a mold, but it would work really nice, although the soap would only be 2.5" tall if you filled it to the very top, I generally make mine 3 or so, but hey.. mine might be too big! I can see splitting a batch and doing a different FO for each cubby, and insulating the whole darn thing overnight! Tell you what... tonight I will try two different things for the drawers, because we arent currently using ours for anything. I will paint the inside of one drawer with OOMOO, and see if it will stick.. Because I have some laying around.. and the other with caulking silicone.. and then do some small test batches in them if they work out. It wouldn’t be too much trouble to line these with freezer paper, of course... but if its not necessary, why mess with it. Another thing IKEA rocks for... candle cups. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/36418000 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20114171 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30157594
  6. Honestly I think you will have to make it yourself, I searched too and couldnt find anything similar, because I wanted one for my craft show booth. My husband did design something on the comp. that came really close, which was a $50.00 kitchen island cart that has a butcherblock top he can cut a small channel into. Then if I want to, I can mount a small bookcase to the back of it. It would end up being less than $100 using supplies we can buy from around here and not have to custom build it.. which he likes. LOL.. he already builds my molds for me so I think he was looking for an easy way out on this one.. and I have to be honest, it wont look as seamless as hers but I think it will still look really nice.
  7. Good idea... I think I am going to make some this next week, see how I like them, post my results, and see if there are people interested in a co-op. If so I would be willing to buy a bunch up, they would be a nice thing to offer along with my soaps and bombs!
  8. ENVY!! My soap cutting is bad too. Its much better since hubby and I built our own soap molds but I still get carried away sometimes and really screw things up. I keep saying "one of these days I will make one..." or I can just suck it up and order one! lol. For sure let us know how you like it!
  9. not sure!! I've been hunting for good values on it and the best I could fine was a 5 pound bag for 26.16 from bulkfoods.com... but thats still .32 an ounce. So assuming I make that recipe, its 2.50 for the tartar alone per batch, and it only makes 18oz or 4 bars. Yikes! So.. I dont know whether its worth it to make them or not. Personally, I thought they did basically what my bath bombs do.. minus the salt. So it might be worth trying the recipe without the tartar, and then with it.. and seeing if there is enough difference in the two to decide whether its totally necessary or not
  10. Well, the instructions are to use the whole thing.. but I only ever used 1/4-1/2 of one at a time. They were solid, like a bath bomb.. not doughy. I used "temple of truth" which is white, so it didnt color my bath. I found a dupe recipe I havent tried yet.. http://www.pvsoap.com/recipe_bubble_bath_drop.htm because of the large amount of cream of tartar it takes... but I'm going to order some online and try it soon.
  11. I ADORE Candle Science Buttercream.. I just ordered some Candle Source buttercream off a sale listing on here so I'll let you know how that is when it gets here. Candle Science buttercream is really really nice though, worked great in my candles but I also used it in scrubs, bath salts, and soap.. and it was great in all of it.
  12. I use the square masons and havent had a problem with soot.. but I use soy only- I use GB464 and C-85's from peak. I had minor problems with hangup during testing with C-80's but once I went to the 85 that stopped.
  13. Wow.. lactoperoxidase is a peroxidase enzyme thats found in milk.. "lacto". Weird. An enzyme found in milk that oxidizes thiocyanate to bacteriostatic products. from Wiki: "It is able to form reactive bromine and iodine species, resulting in natural organobromine and organoiodine substances, and can therefore be categorised as a haloperoxidase. It is fairly heat resistant and was widely used as an indicator of overpasteurization of milk." "Haloperoxidases are peroxidases that are able to mediate the oxidation of halides by hydrogen peroxide " So from that I gather that it prevents Oxidation... uh... confused! Also: Godfrey, et.al. (1990) found that there was a critical combination of LPO, glucose, glucose oxidase (GO), iodide and thiocyanate to be effective in cosmetics. The treatment was effective against a range of yeasts, fungi and viruses, as well as bacteria for periods of up to 4 months. Interesting.. I love looking into stuff like this. Dont know how it helps me in any way though, how confusing. Am I the only one who wishes I went to school for Advanced Chemistry? LOL
  14. I used to manage a health food store.. we had people return "natural- no preservative" products randomly (Burts bees being some of them) because of weird smells or molding. Then again, I found a container of burts bees hand cream I've had in an old purse for THREE YEARS and it was just fine when I opened the jar (Yes I threw it out, just opened it because I was curious, lol) so I think it depends on the product and whats in it. I just use paraben free preservatives and figure if someone asks, I can explain why they are important.. and if they still have a problem.. they can buy elsewhere at their own risk!
  15. yep.. thats my only guess too... I use orange EO and never have any color from it in the finished product. Mystery!
  16. I agree... even the most educated of people usually dont care about a high maintenance candle.. they just want to light it and burn it. I highly doubt any of them read the instruction sheet I am required by my insurance to send, or even the sticker on the bottom of the candle. My mom was burning my testers wrong for about a year, but on the flip side of that, I was over wicking so even if she had been burning them right, they would have been wrong. We have to take responsibility too.
  17. orange spots or orange all over? IDK, thats never happened to me. The only thing I can think is the sugar, like how goats milk soap turns that pretty orange.. because of the sugar content... but that happens almost immediately. I know it gets a bit darker but to go from white to orange in a week has me puzzled.
  18. wow! 5.95? Its weird how vast the price differences can be just two states away.
  19. so you dont get a torch. When your wick is longer than it should be you will get a big flame, which likely will smoke.. can overheat your container.. and burn the candle down faster than it would otherwise burn. It can also burn hotter which will mess with your fragrance, burning it off quicker. If the wick is too long, the combustion process in the candle flame is altered and it produces carbon black instead of carbon dioxide. The carbon black will stick to anything it comes into contact with, including your candle jar, your walls, your ceiling.. yuck!
  20. Its been really hit or miss for me since they renovated ours... here in Utah we have "superwalmarts" and they recently renovated ours to be one of the new "shopper friendly" stores where everything is more defined and layed out better.. it seems like alot of products have been removed along with it though- and like the coconut oil, some prices have jumped like crazy.. where others have dropped! I'm pretty happy about the olive oil though, its cheaper than I could get it at Costco - without the membership.
  21. Not sure if this is where this should go but I just wanted to post that I went grocery shopping today and while all the LouAnns coconut oil was sold out, and has gone from 3.58 per container to 4.85... Walmart now has a GIANT bottle (101 oz) of Olive oil packaged under their great value namebrand. It was $17. something. I made a fool out of myself in the aisle doing something like this ----> and yelling *YES!!!* because Olive oil has been the bane of my soaping existence for years. I live only 40 miles from Majestic Mountain Sage but they dont carry Olive oil, and once you add shipping I figure I've been paying at least .25-30c an ounce for it from other suppliers. I am going to get a case from them next week, the guy I asked thought it was 6 in a case, so I figured I might as well stock up at that price! Just wanted to pass on the good news for anyone looking for a decent price on it without having to have it shipped!
  22. I can offer to store it for them.. but its a small local farmers market, most people browse for an hour or less. And to be honest, this may sound harsh but once its out of my hands, its out of my hands. I will warn each and every person to keep it cool and take it straight home but I cant control what they do with it once they leave my booth
