  1. For the last 2 years I have been using 5% fo in my palm wax candles. I am wondering if there is a significant difference between using the 5% or the suggested 6%.

Also, in using the uv stabilizer, can you use too much? I just recently started using it and it suggest 1/4 tsp per lb. and wondered if this sounds about right.

    Thanks much,

    Deb

  2. No matter where I got my wick stickums from, they would detach towards the end of the burn. I finally started using the GE Silicone.

Some don't like to do this because it needs to be done ahead of time. The silicone needs time to dry, so I do mine the day before. I still use the stickems on my test candles. It is hard to get the silicone wicks out of the jar.

Yes, I cleaned the jars, wiped them out really well and no matter what, I still had problems, not always, but for me once is one time too many. If that wick comes up and wonders to the side of the jar, you take a real risk in the container heating up too much and breaking.

I don't know why some have problems and others don't, but this is what I did to take care of the problem. BTW, I also double wick my palm wax candles.

  3. I might as well add my 2 cents. I just started making pillars last year and really love it. I do not add stearic acid to my pillars, I have never had a problem with the pillar coming out of the mold.

I, too heat the wax to 200 degrees, add the color then FO. I do heat the mold with the heat gun, pour the wax, but do not cover the mold. After it sets up, I wreck it with a bamboo skewer stick, then do a re-pour.

I always get a very pretty design with no problems, even mixing the waxes, they still turn out pretty. I also use the csn wicks, usually an 11 or 12.

I use a product that I found at Lowe's called Suretape. I use a 3 inch strip on the bottom and that is it. I have never ever had one leak from using this one strip. I don't have to mess with the putty stuff anymore and I am a happy camper!!

I think I understand that Top is trying different ways to make a palm wax candle. We all get in our comfort zones....sometimes it is fun to work outside of the box....nothing wrong with that! :yay:

  4. Very pretty candle, Top! I haven't tried the tortoise, but love mixing the feather and starburst together. When I get a chance, I want to do the glass glow and feather, see what I can come up with. I use the csn wicks, I really like the way my candle burns with these. The flame does very well with the palm pillar waxes. Not so good with the container, flame gets too big, IMO.

Nice to have you aboard the palm wax train!! :yay:

  5. I am so glad I read this.....I thought perhaps I might be crazy. It looks like I am fitting right in. I think everything that has been said, I have done, with the exception of buying it because it made me laugh, that is not a bad thing, because some of the names have made me laugh and I did wonder if it might be something i would like.

So off I go to look at some more fo's!

  6. Hi, Smart! You will love working with palm wax. The pillars are like opening a Christmas present, each one can look different when it comes out of the mold.

Stella, Richard and Desert Rose are all very experienced with palm wax. They will be a great help to you.

What I have learned with the palm is how different it burns (thanks Stella!) from other waxes. I made one that I thought was seriously tunneling, but Stella taught me patience. You have got to burn it all the way down. Clearly, if you have a blow-out, you will need to wick down, but in my case the wick I was using turned out to be the right wick size even tho it appeared to be tunneling.

I like to burn mine where whatever candle I have left, I can break it into little pieces and use it in my tart burner. This way you get to use every bit of the candle.

    Good luck to you!

    Deb

  7. I really goofed that one up! It was starburst and glass glow and she did use a csn 12 wick. These are what I use in my pillar candles and really like how they burn. I wish she had kept us posted on how it burned all the way down. I just might give it a try, it sure was pretty.

Thank you Richard for finding it! :yay:

  8. Has anyone tried mixing pillar and container palm to change the look of their palm container candles?

I like the look of the crystal and feather palm pillars that Sabrina made. I wonder if something similar could be done using a container palm like glass glow and mixing it with feather palm? Anyone tried this?

I believe Jakalex made a pillar candle using feather and glass glow. I'm too lazy to go find it, but there was a picture of it in the gallery. It was very pretty, but I don't think she ever posted on how it burned. :sad2:

Ganz has sold clamshell wax melts for years. Long begore we got the clamshells to pour in. They always looked wonderful, a smooth paraffin, nice bright colors and scents. They had a list of scents you could get by mixing their cubes.

Sharon, that is really interesting. I have never seen the clamshells at any stores, be it Wa-mart or Hobby Lobby, or any high-end store like Dillard's.

I'll have to look at the Hobby Lobby in Waco and see if maybe they just recently started selling them, I haven't been in there for the last month or so, also see the name of the company that makes them. The ones I saw were cracked and a little smudged, but that could have happened from customers handling them.
