  1. I have to agree with Scent Celler, a quart size jar is awfully big to start out with. Besides the fact that it will take a lot of wax and FO and will be very expensive to do all the testing. Canning jars a usually pretty inexpensive at places like Walmart, if it were me I would go get some pint jars and start out from there. JMHO
  2. I use Simply Soy a 100% soy wax and have since I started making candles. I can get this from a place about 2 hours away but right down the street from my Sis. So when she is coming up to visit I order wax and have her bring it. I save about $25 in shipping on a 50# bag. I have had good luck with this wax, only a few FO's that didn't throw well so I just don't use those Fo's.
  3. I bought one off Ebay and liked it so much that I had my BIL (cabinet maker) make me 2 more. The template makes lining it really easy, I use freezer paper. I also like how easy it is to cut nice uniform size bars.
  4. Do you have to have the INCI names on lip balm labels? I put my balm in little round tins and the INCI names won't all fit on the round label. Thanks
  5. Peaks Amish Harvest! I use it in soy and it does very well.
  6. I was a can of lye I purchased from BCN. I've never had it chunk on me either, but both pitchers had a chunk covering almost the whole bottom of the pitcher. I did the lye same way I always have. I had another can of lye so I made up another batch (I had oils ready for 2 batches) I was the same brand no problem. But then I didn't have a problem with the other can of lye the first time I had used it. OH well, dang those soap fairies anyway. I did put the soap in my mold, and it is gelling so guess we will see what we see. Thanks for the responses.
  7. When I did the rose petals I went to places like goodwill and got small antique type bowls or saucers. I put the petals in the bowls and then wrapped them in celophane. Most of the bowls I got were .50 to $1 and then whoever gets the petals has a way to put them out on the sink.
  8. I just added my lye solution to my pot of oils get it poured in and notice a big lump of solid lye on the bottom of the pitcher. Never had this happen before and both pitchers that I mixed up did this (just checked the other one) It's a hard lump on the bottom of both pitchers :undecided
  9. I got some in the co-op and wasn't that thrilled with it OOB. I am soaping this afternoon and decided to put some in soap. Anyway, I must have gotten some on my hands while I was weighing it out and DANG, this one is suddenly growing on me. I sure hope it smells as good in soap as it does on my hands
  10. I want to try out that recipe but don't have the fractionated coconut oil...what would be a good sub for that. I am also thinking about using mango instead of the shea so I don't get the grainies (is that a word?) Thanks.
  11. I'm just about out of my last batch of lip balms and thought I would try this recipe since everyone seems to really like it. I have everything but the fractionated coconut oil. Is there anything I can use in place of that? TIA
  12. If you don't know what will happen I would suggest calling a poison control center or a local ER. They should be able to tell you what needs to be done.
  13. Jami, welcome to the board and the wonderful world of soy. I'm sure there are lots of other crazy soy users here, it seems to do that to a lot of people
  14. So take your soap and lip balm and put a small sample of one of your other products in the bag when you sell something. That way you can get em hooked on your stuff. Just make sure you also have a business card in the bag too so they know how to get a hold of you to buy more!!
  15. I have a scale that I got off Ebay that is an Oldwillknot scale. Had it about 2 years now and it's still working.
  16. If I am making a batch of soap with 4 pounds of oils and it's going into a 16 bar Misty Creek mold how much soap should I taking out to color for a swirl? I seem to be rather swirl challenged as I can't seem to get them going all the way to the bottom and I am wondering if I am just not coloring enough for that size batch. TIA
  17. Lavender Apples & Oak? I love the smell of this and want to soap it. After my Coconut Banana Blast mess the other day I am kinds leary of trying something new
  18. Carebear, sorry you ended up with a mess but sure glad to know I'm not being visited by the soap gremlins I was worried when you had posted that CBB had soaped well, and I ended up with instant mashed potatos is my "always use it recipe". Hope you soap turns out OK in the end!
  19. Yeah it does seem like alot for such a small candle. The dang jars are what do it, well actually the lids are what cost so much. The jars are .50 each but the nicer lids that go with them are .62 each. I will see if I can attach a picture of the jar and the lid I want to go with it is a flat wooden lid.
  20. Well mostly cause I didn't have the numbers for that handly while I was here at the computer I do plan to figure it in. I have never ordered from Filmore so don't really know at this point what the shipping cost would be.
  21. I recently sent a sample of one of my candles to a man in Florida who has a gift basket business. He is thinking about adding soy candles to his line. Anyway, the sample I sent was one of my 8oz square masons. He emailed me back and says he wants something 4-6 ozs. I looked at the Filmore site and found a 4oz jar that I like. SO, I was crunching some numbers and looks like without figuring in shipping costs on jars and fo's ( I don't pay shipping on my wax) to make this candle will cost me about $1.81. Does this seem about right? And wholesale is 2x cost? TIA
  22. I got some in the last Peaks co-op and decided to soap it today. I was going along my merry way, had just taken some soap out to color with yellow mica for what I'm sure will be a great swirl get that all mixed go to add the fo into my pot and WHAM instant yellow mashed potatos!! Threw the soap with the mica in the pot real quick gave things one more quick stir and wrangled the mess into my mold. For sure not going to be a nice smooth pretty top, so hopefully everything else will work out!
  23. I think I remember someone saying that they had seen, or had a clear hurricane mold. I googled and didn't find anything. I am picture imbedding challenged and think maybe if I can get a clear mold it might help TIA
  24. I know Bitter Creek North sells it, I bought some from them recently. You have to fill out a form and return it to them in order to purchase lye. *^%&^ meth heads anyway!
