  1. I see the word "paraffin" over and over on that MSDS. But "paraffin" has two meanings. Chandlers use the word to refer to petroleum derivative waxes. In chemistry, the word has a more general meaning. It is a fully hydrogenated carbon chain (which is what soy wax is). Usually the word "alkane" is used now to refer to fully hydrogenated carbon chains, but sometimes I do see paraffin used in this way.

  2. Another vote for Candle Source. I've used it a lot in candles. I've made perfume (with the AH/RE base) with The Scent Works dupe and it is great.

The Candle Source one is really good though, and I am not sure the one from the Scent works is worth the price difference.

  3. What's your name?
    Camay

    How old are you?
Older than I once was, and younger than I'll be

    Where do you live?
    Northern New England

How long have you been making candles/soap/whatever?
Since 1991 (although I did not make anything from 1999-2005)

How did you get started making candles/soap/whatever?
My stepmother came home from a yard sale with a box of candle molds. She saw that I was interested and went down cellar to get another box full of candle stuff from when she tried doing it in the 70s. In one of the boxes was a mold with the name Pourette on it. I wrote to them for a catalog (the days before commercial internet) and they were my first supplier.

    Are you married?
Yes, today is our 16th anniversary

    Any kids?
    2 doggies and 3 kitties

If candle making isn't your primary job, what do you do?
I am a research scientist and lecturer in biochemistry at a university

    Anything else we should know?
I am also obsessive about reading classic literature, cooking, tennis and football

  4. All of the peppermint bark that I have eaten or made has a layer of dark chocolate under the peppermint/white chocolate layer. This is what the picture on CandleScience's site shows, too.

And peppermint patties are peppermint cream surrounded by dark chocolate.

From the food perspective, not the FOs.

  5. If you have a website and wholesalers, it is not a hobby, it is a business and needs to be treated as such.

How do YOU feel about your pictures on their site? Would you feel better if you had an agreement about the pictures? If so, make it happen. It's really all up to you.

  6. BCN has the worst website and shopping cart I have ever tried to use. They know it stinks yet do nothing to fix it. I never order from them unless I cannot find the item anywhere else.

I base my purchasing decisions on what I see in the shopping cart. What is the point of having a website if you then have to call to verify the shipping charges? I hate calling places, and don't have the time for it.

  7. Hi dear today i read this topic and i want to say that glycerine and glycerin are the same thing. they are both either animal or vegetable fats.

Glycerine/glycerin/glycerol is not a fat itself. It is a polyalchohol. It can be part of an animal or vegetable fat. It forms the backbone for the triacylglycerols and is a product of the saponification reaction.

  8. I've used a bunch of MW FOs. I think Rhonda has a really great nose, and I will buy just about anything she brings in! I have almost all of the oils she sells, but sadly I am far, far behind in testing them.

    In 4625, 6%, all great

earthen oak - smells like an earthy vanilla to me, love it

floral muse - like the olive blossom from Flickers, love it

lavender sage - my second favorite lavender (1st is tassi lav from southern soapers)

patchouli passion - in my top 5 FO of all time, like the patchouli honey from Flickers

patchouli raspberry - great earthy raspberry, doesn't have that fake fruity smell

In CP, between 0.7 and 1 oz per pound oil

bergamot tobacco - I keep getting whiffs of ashtray, but there is more, very complex, and I haven't figured it out yet

morning sunrise - nice citrus fruit, but not sure it is better than others I like (fav is grapefruit cassis from southern soapers)

orange ginger - this one accelerated on me, barely had time to get in mold, but came out great

    patchouli passion - fab

    patchouli chocolate - fab

    patchouli raspberry - fab

    sun and earth - fab

    Don't bash me.

I just want to say that I'm so sorry that I let you and all my customers down. I had some bad health issues and I know that is no excuse but I just wanted to say I'm sorry.

We have had so many emails to stay opened so we decided to sell our top fragrances only. So if you want to let everyone know. We will have a letter on the site letting people know and I hope to win you and all my customers back.

Email us the ones you would like to see keep and if they are enough request for it we will.

Just look over the bad grammar. LOL

    Thanks
