  1. Flash point simply means the temp at which the FO will ignite if exposed to an open flame. It has nothing to do with whether your fragrance will last in soap, CP or HP. Some fragrances really "stick", others do not. The fragrance is not "burning off."

This is a handy site to check fragrances for reviews before soaping:

That's what I thought the flash point was also. Never even looked at the fp in regard to soap. Hmm, off to do some research.

  2. For the palm 2 & 3 I add 1-2 tsp. of vybar 343 per lb of wax and I have added up to 2 oz fo per lb without any problems ( when testing to see how much fo I could add without seepage ) I normally use between 1 and 1.5 oz fo per lb. depending on how strong the fo is.

When using the container palm I rarely go above 1 oz fo because even with adding the vybar it will still bead up on top.

The vybar 343 is made for mottling wax so you can add more fo without affecting the mottle. ( Candlewic carries it ) it doesn't mess up your feathering/crystalizing at all either.

  3. Atkins and Pearce sells 10 pcs. of 10 different wick sizes for $35.00 and they have the sizes you want.

They are also extremely helpful if you call them and tell them what it is you're trying to wick.

Years ago I was trying to wick a 2" palm pillar and ordered a sample pack, not only did they send the ordered samples but also a box full of different wicks that they thought might work.

Their site also has the best wick information out there.

Edit to add that after you find the wick size you need then Atkins & Pearce should be able to tell you who carries them in smaller quantities than a thousand.

  4. Candlewics palm 1 ( container) is the only one I have tried. I like it but it is not the easiest wax to work with. Like the palm 2 & 3 you pour hot and slow cool. The biggest pain is not getting what I call air caverns. You can pour this and when it sets up it looks beautiful but when you start burning it you WILL hit the biggest air pockets you can imagine. It is imperative that while it's cooling you poke at least 4 good sized relief holes around the wick and keep them open until the candle is cooled. When you do the repour, fill up the holes but don't pour a huge amount of wax to fill up the jar or you will get more pockets. I've also had good luck with layering it. The scent throw will probably not be as strong as other waxes but I think it's decent, plus a longer cure helps. It has a clean burn to.

Also you will need to wick up. I use RRD's or LX's.

I have no idea what the ingredients other than palm wax are.

  5. I bought 10 lbs of this lye from Ace Hardware and I swear every single batch ( 4 so far ) has been wonky. I have tried a couple of different recipes and different fo's. Checked my scales for accuracy, rechecked weights, ran all recipes through soapcalc and I have decided that it's either the lye or the soap gremlins have made a permanent move to my house.

One thing the batches have in common is after I bring it to trace and pour it into the mold it thins out and seems to liquify, takes longer to harden up and then has an oil film on top and once cured the lather is almost non-existant.

It's almost like the oils aren't fully saponified.

Anyone else have any feed back when using this lye? ( it says 100% lye )

  6. In reading a lot of recipes ( soap etc. ) I have noticed that rarely is there a distinction as to which coconut oil should be used ie; fractionated, 76 or 92 degree or virgin. Is there a general assumption in the knowledgeable soap making world about which one is to be used in a given recipe ???

Anytime I see a soap recipe that looks interesting I always run it through the soapcalc and go with the coconut that gives me the best numbers but I wonder if this causes confusion to the brand new soapmaker.

  7. Thanks all!!! I appreciate it.. Leslie was the one that enabled me with all of these micas. LOL I just kept buying and buying and buying. I have a lot of dupes so after V-day , I am heading to Fl for 2 weeks and when I get back, I may go through them more and get rid of some that I have several of.

    Christina

Now you just pack up all those extras and bring them on down to me:grin2: Don't forget that I live a few miles from where you'll be staying. Could you come over and chase the soap gremlins away??

  8. My experience with testers has much to be desired. I have finally given up and burn every damn thing myself. I gave out tester forms, explained, you name it. I have given out so many candles in every size, shape, and form that I could make. I have begged, pleaded, threatened. Same old crap no matter whether it's a relative, close friend, acquaintance. No response until I hell hack. Then it's not much more than a "It burned nice." It's not like I was expecting them to give me a report like the UL labs. I had some give my test candles as gifts. Some lied and gave me back containers they had "cleaned" and said burned perfectly. (I found traces of soot.) Bottom line is, I decided no matter how many testers I give out, I burn one identical myself! Yep, I'm in a bad mood today.

Well, I'm not in a bad mood:wink2: but I still agree with pretty much every thing you say. The only way to know if you have a candle burning to your specifications is to test them yourself. Sometimes I get tired of it ( especially when it's a scent I detest ) but I never felt that the feedback I was getting ( and most peeps were good about filling out the test sheets ) was telling me all that I needed to know.

  9. I had that happen once from a supplier. The 1 oz samples were awesome but when I bought the larger sizes it was obvious that it was a weaker, diluted oil. ( this was many years ago and they are no longer in business )

Your best bet would be to contact them with your concern and see if they are willing to help you solve the problem, if not them mark them off of your list of suppliers.

  10. I know that there are a lot of people that like the games, but I'm not one of them. If I want to shop, I shop. Those games are one of the reasons I no longer attend baby or wedding showers. I send a gift so I don't have to endure the games.

Ditto!! I think the only time those games would be fun is after consuming copious amounts of alcohol;)
