  1. That's the plan.

I went and peeked at it myself. The top fell because it got so hot :( so, the top won't look quite like that once I cut. (I had a feeling it would get very warm by how fast it thickened up, so I only put one towel on it. Even that was too much.

Oh well. it will help the layers adhere better I guess. :)

Its going to turn out great

  2. You are going to have to walk away from this one. You have no control over what they say on their website. Its their mistake to make that claim and especially clumsy of them to display those words that contradict the product on the same page. It is a headshaker to me too. Personally, I would just snort my derision to myself and leave it.

    Second that

  3. I know someone on this forum has a trick for soap seizing. They keep it warm and wait 30 minutes or something until its re-softens enough to smash down? I hope someone remembers cause I have big lumps of soap in my mold. I don't want to have to rebatch if I could remember the instructions for seizing.

    Wish I could help :sad2:

  4. Do you remember me posting about the white and green can of Capatriti olive oil I found at Walmart? I just used it yesterday and love it! Its a nice pale yellow and doesn't interfere with my coloring. Anyway I am pleased with the soap color I made and really like this new brand I found at Wally's. If you have it at your Wally's you should try it. So much better than Wally's virgin OO.

I'm going to check on that OO you mentioned this weekend, I don't mind the creamy color, it looks nice, but not when I want white----but I'll finish up this big jug of OO in the meantime, got to figure out what I'm going to do with all of this soap!! :grin2: it won't be wasted tho, DH has a soap basket of his own----

  5. I just went on an embed mold shopping spree! :)

    (sort of)

I got these - I hope they come out as detailed as the mold shows. We'll see.

I got the Christmas mold, the Halloween mold and the Ocean mold.

I am saving for later the heart, Easter and flower mold.

I think I have an addiction to molds as my addiction to FO's is fading. LOL I don't get all that excited about scents anymore. Probably because I have so many and so many blending options (which is what I do more than making straight up scents anymore anyway) that it's not a thrill to get them.

But molds?? O man!! I love molds. Even molds I will probably never use I get!!

For instance - I bought the cylinder mold from Soap Making Resource over a year ago (probably 2 years now) and it was a LOT of money - I have never even used it once. NOT ONCE.. But boy did I have to have it!! LOL

Yes, it's a problem... I admit it. But it's a problem I don't want to get help for just at the moment. Maybe next year.

    LOL

ETA - not sure why it's linking to the Easter mold, but just click Chrismtas, Halloween & Ocean and you can see which molds I got. :)

Those look so cute, can't wait to see what you do with them.

  6. Looks like you were having some fun with those molds. I like the green color you came up with. Its a pretty minty green.

Thank you, I was having fun, just kind of improvised as I went along, the color was Neon Green liquid pigment from Planet Earth, tho I like the convenience, it seems I have to add a lot of it to get the color intended.   I've decided I'm going to either cut back on my Walmart OO or try to use more white based oils, I added TD to my oils and it is curing out to be the cream or ivory that you see, not that I mind, its just not what I wanted.

  7. If they don't gel it may take a few days since they are molds of plastic. If you get in a hurry you can pop them in the freezer for a few hours then let them come to room temp after taking them out of the freezer before trying to unmold.

Experimenting is fun, and you are doing a great job!

    :)

Thanks, I am having fun with it, just seeing if some the rules can be broken :) will try to leave them alone at least until the weekend, but I do get impatient :)

  8. Made a small batch of soap tonight and decided to just play around with it, didn't worry about the temps, although when I added the lye water to the soap oils, lye was about 105, oils about 100,no mold insulation.  The blob in the square plastic mold was leftover, so I added liquid colorant till I hopefully got the green I wanted, had a little trouble with mica, but got a little on the top of one or 2. Gotta work on that for sure.    I had no plan of doing much of anything with it when I started out. If this works out, it will be by accident :D

I learned a little about layering tho, hope this turns out.

All the molds I used are found at Walmart,  except the butterfly mold.  There are no designs on the inside of the molds, so the soap surface will be relatively flat, now if I can get it out of the mold :)

  9. The SAO is usually sitting on the very top shelf in a small square bottle along with other oils like sesame or walnut. Its kind of pricey but wow is SAO wonderful in soap! Haven't tried the walnut or sesame in soap yet. If Wally's doesn't carry it in your store try your local large chain supermarket. I have found it there.

Will check Walmart again and if I can't find it will try Kroger----

  10. I prefer soapcalc and do find it very helpful. I can calculate my lye and liquid without an online calculator as I have my own spreadsheet for that. My figures are consistent with soapcalc so I can rely on it if I can't access soapcalc.

But I like using soapcalc for more than just calculating my recipe. I can try out new formulations and find out the numerics for fatty acid profiles and soap conditioning properties. It has been helpful in helping me reformlating my shampoo, facial, shaving, bath, and other various soap recipes I create. Another feature is I like to print out my recipe. Each soap I make has "papers" so I can go back to it for any reason. I also keep notes on the recipe papers so if I want to change something I can refer to my notes.

I also use soapcalc as a gage for recipe creations meaning just because the numbers don't always look great on soapcalc it doens't mean it won't be an awesome soap. You should not rely completely on any soap calculator for the soap properties of every soap. But it helps me fine tune properties I am aiming for so to that effect it is very helpful. Hope that makes sense.

Makes sense, very much so.  I used soap calc recently for a 2 oil recipe, I felt the soap would be soft and the numbers proved it, but it also showed that it would be very good on skin conditioning, hardness was in a low range, guess its due to the iodine #, but I thought it would be a start for my dog shampoo---

  11. As a novice soaper, I depend on them greatly.  As I research CP recipes, I've occasionally come across people that don't follow them that closely, each has their own opinions of course and I guess the more experienced they are, they probably feel comfortable about that.   I don't think that I will ever not use them.

Do you as a soapmaker feel that they are beneficial to you?

  12. There-in lies my problem. I don't do the grocery shopping. LOL

I really should start going with my hub to check out any soaping supplies though. Maybe I'll do that next time. :)

It surprised me as to what they offered, I found safflower, sunflower, corn, etc---but no sweet almond as Candybee had found, maybe I'm shopping to late in the day :)

  13. Well I always check out the supermarket where I am food shopping. I go down the cooking isle to check out the oils they have. You can usually find a store brand OO fairly cheap. Plus I am often surprized by the other oils they may be carrying, sunflower, sweet almond, grapeseed, etc. Sometimes you just need an oil in a pinch.

Also, Walmart carries some really good shortening for soaping. I use the one with the animal fat (beef tallow) and they also carry big buckets of Manteco brand lard. Both are excellent to soap with.

Thats for sure, I was surprised to see grapeseed oil there, but haven't found sweet almond yet and if I do, It's coming home with me.  I do use their Lard in the buckets also and the off brand shortening---

  14. I'm so glad you did well!! Good luck at your Market on Saturday.

I have a show this weekend, 2 in November and 1 in December that is a 2-day show. I had one booked every weekend, but I just couldn't do it, so I have someone filling in for me on the ones I felt bad if I cancelled on such a short notice, and 1 I cancelled that I didn't feel that bad about because the show is not a good one and the fees are a little high, but the kicker is the organizer is really not very nice of a person. She is very mean spirited, so even though I feel a bit guilty for cancelling "last minute" (which it's not it's the 22nd of November) I don't feel as bad as I do for the others I'm having someone cover.

Don't blame you for canceling the Nov. 22 show, its not necessary to put up with those kind of attitudes, besides, I'm sure you and CB will have other great shows , as nice as your things are, I know you'll both do well :)

  15. A little late considering the weekend is already upon us, but what are your plans?

For me I have to make more of my freshly fallen snow in a bigger mold because I've had so many inquiries about it from all the different forums and FB I've posted too, and also my mom and sister saw it and they both want a couple bars each. :)

So I'll be doing that, I also received a mold from a dear friend from this board (Thank you again 7 Pawz!!) it's a deep snowflake mold that I finally decided would be perfect for a salt bar. I am not sure on scent but I do know it will be a peppermint blend of some sort, be a light pink and I will be using both table and Himalayan pink salt in it.

Then I will also need to make up another masterbatch of my soaping oils once my hub gets back with getting my Olive Oil. (My sister works at Sam's Club so I make her get my OO for me and my hub picks it up from her that way I get her discount on top of Sam's bulk prices. :)

And on top of this I need to clean my house from top to bottom, washing walls and shampooing carpets because I am hosting an annual Memorial Party for my brother. It's been 11 years and we do this every year, so my house goes through this every year as well. LOL The reason for the party is sad, but it's always a great time, and my brother used to always tell us "I have the best friends in the world, nobody has better friends than I do" and he was absolutely right. I have never run across a group of people better than this core of his friends. He grew up with them which in turn means I grew up with them as well, and to this day they all still hang out together and are best of friends. It's a fun group, and this party has brought me closer to them as well. They are all like brothers and sisters to me. :)

So that's about it for me. What about y'all? Anything fun or pressing this weekend?

(Oh and I had shows but they got cancelled and it's just as well, I have so much other to do! - I'll start up again on the 25th)

I know this post is a little old, but hope all went well with the Memorial Party--

  16. I buy from Walmart too. Check out the other OO brands. They have one in a blue can I often buy. Sorry I don;t remember the name but you can't miss the blue can. Look on the bottom shelves where the large size OO cans sit. It is the large size with 101oz. Make sure you buy the regular OO. Its about $18 plus they have a slightly smaller size for about $15.

Yesterday I just picked up a new can of Capatriti OO at Walmart for less than the blue can. They just started carrying Capatriti OO. Its in a white and green can and holds 101 oz.

Also, do you have a Giant or Martin's foods store near you? They carry their own store brand of olive oil in the large 101oz plastic bottle for about $18. Its actually pretty good tasting too. I also use it for cooking.

I don't have a Giant or Martins food store near me, but I will certainly try Walmart, they're kind of limited here so to speak and they've probably moved the OO again, nothing stays where you find it----they wanted too much for CO so I'm happy with my order I just got from BA, price pluse shipping worked out pretty good, But its good to have Walmart handy in case I get too close to running out of some of my oils---

  17. First I add my lye, make sure its dissolved completely, then I add in the TD and stir. Just make sure you stir in the TD really well and again just before you pour your lye solution into your oils.

Thank you, going to try that way :) It might work out better for me for my one color batches than what I've tried to do
