There are a lot of myths surrounding soy candles. Most of these are designed to sell soy candles better, and have very little truth in them. A great example is the great "no soot" myth. Sites that sell soy candles love to say that there is absolutely no soot produced with a soy candle. However, there is no truth and all hype to that claim. Absolutely, positively, and most importantly, scientifically, all organic compounds when burned will emit some carbon (soot) due to incomplete combustion. Sooting is primarily a factor of wick length and disturbance of the flame's steady teardrop shape. There is no such thing as a soot-free candle. Further, while soy wax is all-natural and will not produce the thick black soot that you see on some paraffin containers, it does produce soot. An important fact to remember is that not all soot is black. Soot can be a "white soot" that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Soy wax will produce little black soot - unless the candle is improperly wicked, made, or burnt, but it may produce white soot.

But before you get scared of soot, let me tell you, that soot is in fact not harmful to you. Candle soot is composed primarily of elemental carbon particles, and is similar to the soot given off by kitchen toasters and cooking oils. These everyday household sources of soot are not considered a health concern, and are chemically different from the soot formed by the burning of diesel fuel, coal, gasoline, etc. So the myth of "soot free soy candles" is not only inaccurate, but simply an effort by some companies to scare the general public into buying their candles.

With that being said, there are some benefits to purchasing soy wax candles. While petroleum based paraffin wax is a limited resource, soy wax is a renewable resource that is limited only by how many soybeans we can grow. It is also beneficial to farmers who sell soybean crops, as well as lasting almost twice as long as paraffin wax.

However, soy wax is naturally a "soft" wax. While container candles, tealights, and small tarts may be made entirely of soy, it is extremely difficult to make good pillar candles and votives out of 100% pure soy wax. Additives are used to make them better, but in most cases, paraffin wax is still a much better solution for those types of candles. In my own company, Mystickal Incense & More, we use a blend of 50% soy wax and 50% paraffin wax for our free-standing candles.

In the end, both paraffin wax and soy wax are both good choices for candle wax. Neither is more "environmentally friendly" than the other, as there has never been scientific evidence that paraffin wax is harmful to your health in any way at all. It is a personal choice of which type you prefer to use, and both types hold scent and dye just as well. The only benefit that there is in all reality, is that container candles using soy wax do burn longer. And it does benefit the farmers of the Mid-western United States. However, most other claims regarding soy wax are false and/or misleading.

I dont recall saying I conquered tarts? but I have made them and have yet to decide if I like doing them or if it is even worth the effort. I am also waiting to get my tart warmer for Christmas to try them out. I really do not want to buy one just to test them to see how they do plus I do not want to hurt my daughters feelings by buying one.

I just want to do something that is more challenging......I was contemplating the hurricanes. I like the ones that have the pics on them but they look really complicated.

Well all she really told me was that she doesn't disclose that info, (where she gets her wax) and when I asked if it was CJ Robinson, she said no. Hmmmm, no biggie. I'm just glad that my hangup problem is better. Only a few of my oils won't give me a full meltpool no matter how I wick it and how long I burn it. But I'm so happy with the hot throw of this wax that I'm willing to ditch them and find a few new FO's!

What type of oils are you having a problem with? I was just wondering.... are they all from C&S?

Farmhouse does not get their 50/50 wax from the same place as C&S but Just Scents and Tri-State do!

I am not sure where Sherrie gets hers from but I do love it. Plus, I love dealing with her!! She is so sweet and has always been truthful about her supplies.

I ordered 2 (16)oz jars of their Baked Apple Pie and now it is only $9.99?? When I got them they were much weaker than they have ever been. So....I am still searching for another supplier for that famous Baked Apple Pie.

I have heard thru this site that you can purchase golden harvest at the Dollar General. I buy Kerr at Sams Club, golden harvest and ball at both Walmart and Kroger. Michaels also sells mason jars as does most any grocery store.

OR are you talking about the ones that have a light that goes inside of the mason jars?? The big one not the pint size? If so, you will have to drill a hole in the jars to run the lights thru. I had a friend at a local glass company do it for me. Is this it?

Debscent~ that is so funny how we had trouble with the 1275 and now we are both using the same wax again. I do love it. I will try warming my jars and see if that works. I do not mind putting up with some issues to get the burn that I want but I just hate the way the frosting looks. Thanks ladies for all the help!

I am looking for the rusty tin ornaments that are used as decoration on the electric candles. I have seen them on www.carnationcandles.com and want to use them on mine. I have looked on colonialtins.com and cannot find them but did not know if any of you use them for your business.

Sharon~ I get the nipple around the wick too! It is almost as if the wax crawls up the wick. I thought it was because I pull the wick so tight with my wick holder.

I love this wax but I hate the frosting. It does not seem to bother customers but it annoys the hell out of me. Will warming my jars as Sherrie suggested help or have you tried that?

I buy my jars from Walmart, I use the golden harvest mason jars....they are the square ones.

I love the CD wicks, some people call them heinz core. I use the CD 14's in my jars and I have used zinc and the LX's but I always go back to the CD's.

I also use jars from other places....like Michaels and candlesandsupplies.com

I am bored with container candles and have learned how to make grubby electrics, started on making tarts and would like to conquer something new.......any ideas???

I would like to stay in wax related items vs. soap but I love the soap duckies that one of the ladies on here does so that might be an option. OR....selling tarts with burners? Then there is the cost of the tart warmers....any wholesalers that you know of on those?

I love this wax but I am having a problem and I want to see if anyone else here has the same issue.......I pour at 165 and I am getting frosting on my jars. (No, I do not heat my jars) Mainly on the darker colors but frosting none the less. I am also experiencing some cracking around the tops. (I am wondering if the cold weather of them being in a non heated building all weekend had anything to do with it) Nothing major that my heat gun cannot take care of but I really feel like I should not have to deal with it.

I really do not know how to enable the PM thing. I do not see it anywhere on my user cp. I can help you with the electrics if you can help me figure that one out.

I think that any bulb would work with them. I am so excited, my Mother took about 12 of my candles and 3 of my electric ones to the Vet and to her Doctors office and she sold all of them. Then she took orders for more electric candles to be made by Christmas. Gotta love Moms!!! Oh and BTW~ She bought me a presto pot today, went to Lowes and bought the items needed to make a spout and she is taking it home to make it for me. I cannot wait to use it!!!
