redjello2000
Hi everyone! I was wondering what you guys would suggest as a starting point for wicking a 3" diam. pillar candle made with soy. I have made containers for over a year using the CD wick series. I was wondering if I would have to switch to a different brand of wick because of the soy pillar wax. Any suggestions would be appreciated as always. TIA,Beverly
Jeana
I like the LX series for my pillars maybe start with 24 or twenty eight. But maybe you could try using your CDs first before switching. I would start with what you wick your 16 oz container with. My 3" pillar wicks are similar to my 16oz jars. About one or two sizes up.I hope that gives you at least a start on which wick to pick. I like working with spools when it comes to pillars. You can cut the lengths to whatever size you need. You don't need to have sustainers with pillars (Maybe you know that).Candlewic.com has a really large selection of spools, at a decent price. They will also send you samples if you want to try something new.I keep remelting the same candle to try the different wicks, so I don't waste a bunch of wax. Good luck
Henryk
Here's a couple posts from the old board. Never did like the way straight soy burned as a (tall) pillar. Paraffin IMHO burns so much better as a pillar (sorry). I tried mixing BW with it once or twice, but just decided to move on to other things. And I did try a couple brands.http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=veggiewax;action=display;num=1110651533;start=14http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=veggiewax;action=display;num=1110843964;start=8http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=veggiewax;action=display;num=1110253436;start=9You may want to try the recipe from this post http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193&page=2&pp=10, if you do, please post about it. If you are testing wicks in pillars I would make them with pins - then you can pull out wicks that are really too small or too large. Once you find a couple you think will work - burn the whole pillar. What starts out looking good can cause a blowout later on or when power burned ... another reason I went to paraffin for pillars.
