cmb
Does anyone know if using dye flakes inhibits the mottling with 1343? I made a batch last night with my regular formula and it didn't mottle. I need to make a midnight blue-ish candle and can't get that color with just liquid dye. Thanks!
topofmurrayhill
That's really interesting. Dye flakes are one of the more mysterious colorants. We know what the others are made out of, but lately I've been asking around about the dye flakes and so far nobody knows what the base is for those. The only clue we have is that they melt at a pretty high temperature. If by any chance they use some kind of polymer as the base, that could conceivably throw your mottling off.All the colorants use the same kind of dyes so there's no color you can get with flakes that you can't get with liquid dye. Thing is, if you don't have the right shade of liquid on hand you have to mix it up. The simplest way of getting midnight blue would be to add black to the right shade of blue. Laura
Doneen at Bitter Creek has a page somewhere listing the dyes...i think flakes were one listed that can prohibit mottling...
