firegirl
But.. I am about to venture into CP for the first time.. I just want to make sure that I am clear on this one thing... I want to make a batch of soap that will fit into my "3 #" loaf mold. When I enter the numbers into the soap calculator at soapcalc.com I entered 3# for the batch amount. When you determine the size of your batch you are only considering the amount of fats/oils? Or am I incorrect? I am making Quiet Girls recipe in the recipe section. I am using my 3 # loaf mold. Would someone kindly help me out with this one question.. I read Ann L. Watson's book today.. yep all of it, but I don't remember this being covered. I appreciate any help! Angel91805
When someone refers to a 3# batch (or 2# or 5#), they are referring to the oil weight only, not the oil/lye/water weight. A good formula to follow is to get the interior dimensions of your mold....Length x width x depth (you plan to pour) x .4 I bought molds off of ebay that said 4 pounds. Yeah, 4 pounds finished maybe, but that baby will only hold 40 oz of oils (2.5 #)!Donna

SOAPFREAK
You need to add up your oils, water and lye. Then that will give you the size that will fit in your mold. Click into the oz. instead of lbs. and keep making it go up or down to fit your mold. You have to keep tweaking it until it amounts to 48 oz. You can even make it for instance 29.50 oz. of oils. It doesn't have to be rounded off. If you have a weird measurement for your oils etc. just round them up to the nearest whole number. It doesn't effect it. Hope that helps. topofmurrayhill
I use a 3 lb loaf mold also. I've been setting my batch size to 2 lbs in Soapcalc. With the default settings (based on 38% water to oil and 5% superfat) it seems to come out just right for my mold. Add up the numbers in the ingredients list at the bottom and I think you'll find it comes out to a shade over 3 lbs.

cindym
No question is stupid. These calculators can take some time to get use to . Once you master them though you will have a blast playing around with recipes. Have fun.
