Aluminum and Stearic

Recommended Posts

I was downstairs pouring and noticed my pour pots leaving a ring on my tiles. After looking at it and cleaning it out and holding it up to the light, I noticed small pitting and holes at the bottom. I asked BF what would cause that and he said acid...... like stearic acid!!!

Duh!! Didn't know that! Thought Aluminum was indestructable like krypton or something. The worst damage must have occured when I was setting the pot on very low directly on the burner to melt the acid and vybar before adding wax. Now I just mix wax, stearic and vybar in the big wax melter (stainless steel) and don't put stearic directly in the pot. Diluted like that, I don't think it's a problem.

BTW, BF fixed the holes by putting a little expoxy on the outside of the pot. Just an FYI for everyone.
