Researching for a New Candle Business

Uhhhhhm..................................no. Nope, nothing at all. Good luck to you.

Yes, there is. I know someone isn't going to say it, but having another half in the business with me, I would prefer that my partner know what's going on and how things are done (and I don't have that and it causes a lot of problems, even though we both excel in certain areas.) Now if you learn by your partner telling you great, but you need to know your product inside and out, otherwise it WILL cause problems. (I can't be the only one suffering from this lol)

Welcome to all the new candlemakers that are posting on this topic. Sounds like all have your ducks in a row. This is a great website to learn from. Lots of creative people on this board. You only problem now is trying to figure out how not to want to make everything you see in the gallery.....LOL.

She is "bigger", "meaner" and much "better looking" than me so I pretty much go with the flow.....lol.....

As far as brokering yourself.....You can do that if you are close to the US or a "bond" warehouse....If you can go across to the US you just pick up your parcels at a UPS depot and present it at Canada Customs when you come back....Make sure you have complete invoices or they will not clear you package.....

As an alternative you can see if you can find a logsitics company....They will recieve your packages in the US, transport them to Canada and store them in a "bond" warehouse.....You then take the paperwork to Canada Customs and clear the package....Once it has been cleared you go to the "bond" warehouse and pickup the package....They charge you some for the transport from Canada to the US but it should be far less than what UPS would charge...

FYI there is a logistics company in London ON that should be able to help you out....Just not sure of their name so you might need to phone around.....If I can figure out who they are, I will let you know....

....RCS...

Great! Thanks for the information. I will check out the London area. If worse comes to worse, I will have to take a little road trip across the border.

I totally agree with Scented. My husband and I are not together all of the time. If I wanted to make a candle and did not have him here to help me then I would be lost, that is saying that he was the only one that knew what was going on.

Honestly if you plan on making a business out of this and want to suceed you need to know what you are doing and what you are making. You can not make a candle and then sell if you don't even know what wax, wick or scent you put in it.

I can see that your husband is very educated in many fields, but maybe you should take this one under your belt. Good luck.

Some people are better at research, comprehension, and teaching and yet others are better at hands on stuff and learn more by doing. Perhaps that is the case here.

If you have a marriage and a partnership, it's great if you can work together to create a craft. You should be able to rely upon each other for guidance, provided you're both jointly interested in it. Candle making is an old craft like many others, that can be taught and handed down from one person to the another--without ever having to read a book.

I think the perception that some here may have based on the original post iss that wifey might be just a teensy bit lazy or naive. But maybe that's not the case at all. Perhaps it's just a venture that a couple thought they could work on together.

I'm operating under the assumption that she is the one to make the candles, but hubby is researching all the waxes and wicks, etc., to determine which ones they will be using. Am I wrong?

But to anybody else out there if you really want to start a candle business please read through all of the threads and start by buying a kit from a real business such as Peaks who made this forum up for us or another candle supplier that doesn't try to recruit and earn money from you buying an expensive kit.
