LaVida
I have a bunch of buttermilk powder, and I'd like to make milk based soap .. how many tbs of powder for the lye solution do I use? Should I save some for trace? I'd like to make a 2 lb batch..I searched the forum yesterday but didn't find the answer I was looking for. Thanks in advance ...LaVida

RobinInOR
I make up a slurry w/ water using 1T power per pound of oil. Add it at trace (hold back a little water from the lye solution to compensate).
LaVida
ooh, thanks everyone... do you notice the difference in your soap when you add a milk powder?
Crafty1_AJ
I make up a slurry w/ water using 1T power per pound of oil. CareBear
Yea, what AJ said. I get grainy results about 50% of the time if I add powder to oils.
swamp_deb
I haven't had any problems with grainy milk soaps. Could be that ka sb that I crank up to the max to blend it in with though:rockon:.I can tell a difference in the milk and non-milk soaps. I prefer most milk soaps. Crafty1_AJ
Milk soaps tend to have a dense, creamy type lather. Some would say it imparts a silky feel to the soap. HTH
krazeforsoap
I agree with what AJ said, and my skin likes milk soaps much better. In the winter I get flakey skin and it really helps!!
Michi
Hmmm so how much water, just an ounce or so??I have buttermilk powder also, but couldn't remember how to use it in soap, so it's just been sitting here. So, you can really tell the difference even when you add it before trace?Does it make it trace faster?I swear I've just about given up on the soapmaking cuz if I use my stickblender it traces super duper fast, but if I just use a wooden spoon it takes FOREVER!! :undecided

Sorry I put the little guy up there, now that I look at him, I don't like the way it looks. I am such a dummy sometimes when it comes to expressing myself, I apologize. Now, using milk powders, I have had no problems with blending them in with the oils, I have been blessed with a great sb though. With liquid milks, I will use half the water needed for the recipe for the lye solution then add concentrated milk (goat milk from the can) for the rest of the water at trace. This does make a difference in the appearance of the finished bar.Clear as mud???
CareBear
OHH do I feel SWAP coming on? Different milks AND different ways to HANDLE/ADD them? C'mon Deb - you do this one!
