iammommytwo
okay- I figured I'd get y'alls opinions on this.......Does the age of an FO really matter?? I mean, do they really lose their strength over a period of time, and why??TIA!!!!
eugenia
They can go bad over time. Some oils last much longer than others. If it smells normal in the bottle, it's OK to use. FO may also change color when it gets rancid.
OutlandishLady
If you've ever smelled an FO that has gone over, you'll know they DO go bad. I have had FOs that were great a year or more after I bought them, and a few that got funky in just a few months. I've never had one that just seemed to weaken, they just smelled really bad. REALLY bad.

AngelaVA
From my experience, they won't lose their potency necessarily, but will stink terribly when the go bad. I have FOs that are over a year old and they are still fine
Scented
I've had some just flat lose their scent, some that stink to high heaven and others that started to turn color or get a little darker on the bottom of the bottle.
Noodle
I have only had two fragrance oils out of the hundreds that I have go bad. I have more oils than I have hair on my head, and I have a lot of hair. LOL! Both of these oils smelled positively sickening. One was from WSP and the other was from Cedarvale. A couple have lost their scents completely.
iammommytwo
WOW...thanx for all the replies!!I can't say that I have any that smell "bad"....it's just that one of my stronger/fav FO's (Lemongrass), I can't seem to get it to throw anymore - even after upping it to 9%. hawaiiansun
I had a bottle of cinnamon bun go bad on me. It started out so freakin good. Was one of my best sellers in ornies and bags, then a few months later the same bottle ruined a batch of aroma beads. It was horrible

Candle Man
I agree with what the others have said. Also if you can afford to buy amber glass bottles to transfer the FO's into they will last even a little longer. HDPE plastic bottles FO's come in are pourus and FO will evaporate out of the bottle over time. Some you can really tell are citrus, they will make the bottle suck in and distorte. Also make sure you store FO's in a cool dark place, so they will last longer. One way you can test evaperation, out of a bottle, is weigh a bottle of FO, don't use it then weigh it again, say in about 6 months. If it weighs lighter you know the oil has evaperated out of the bottle.
Noodle
The two oils that went bad on me, and I mean BAD were Raspberry from Cedarvale and Blackberry from WSP. Neither one were citrus. I would worry about all old oils.
