daniedb
I want to include some quotes on one of my lines of products. Some of the quotes are from general history (think MLK Jr.'s "I have a dream!" statement), some are from literature (i.e., Shakespeare), and some are from more current literary works, either poems or novels.I did some googling, but I can't seem to get the right combo of words to find out whether using quotes is something that I am legally able to do. Obviously, in the terms of knowledge in the public domain, like quotes from the Bible, I'm not going to be sued, but what about smaller novelist who are alive or whose estate owns the literature?I know it's an obscure issue, but can someone at least perhaps provide me with an idea about who to call or where to look to find out an answer? Thanks.
sharyl55
If it is an author, could could check to see who the publisher was for the book. Then contact the publisher to see if the work is still covered by copywrite laws.
dzeyez
It's my understanding that as long as it's quoted and you give the author credit you have no problems....
