Wanting to try CP soap..

I have finally gotten brave enough to make some CP soap. I do have a question... how bad does the lye smell when you mix it? If I make a small batch some morning, will my husband come home from work and choke??

I mix my lye outside - when it's clear, I bring it in the house and can't smell it at all

I have a room set that I do all my work in. I mix my lye right next to an open window and I've never had a problem with the smell of the lye taking over the room. None of my family has ever complained about it either. :smiley2:

I also mix the lye outside and let it cool for a little bit then bring it inside the house to finish cooling. I've never noticed an overwhelming smell or anything.

Defiantly mix it outside or under the range hood of your stove, near an open window ect. It will have fumes for the first few minutes then literally no smell at all, but those startup fumes can cause your airway to become soar and iritated if you inhale them.

I also noticed that the fumes don't travel very far away from the container where the lye is being mixed...I was able to just stand to the left and not be bothered at all by the lye. And it was completely gone in about 5 minutes maybe even less!

Since I have only done 3 batches of CP and very cautious about things. I also take my outside and mix and then bring in a few minutes later.

I should take it outside but I don't. I mix it in the sink. The stove is right beside it so I turn the stove exaust fan on high, open a window, and pull a t-shirt up over my nose and mouth in case I forget and try to inhale some. The smell is only produced during the actual contact of the water and lye and it's gone just in a couple minutes.

Folks, be careful using your stove exhaust because some of them don't vent to the outside. Some are just a grease filter and blow the air back into the house. If you don't know what type you have I would mix it out side because the fumes are corrossive and toxic. Mix it outside and stand up wind. After the initial reaction takes place the mixture dosen't produce the fumes.
