scentlady Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I notice that lotion bar recipes don't have a preservative. Do they need one? If I decide to make these how should I store them and how long can I keep them. How long do the butters keep in the fridge Quote
hawaiiansun Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Lotion bars do not need a preservative cause there is no water in it nor does it get in contact with water. As to how long it'll last good Q I want to know too Quote
mystical_angel1219 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 You don't have to put a preservative in your lotion bars. However, being exposed directly to the skin (presence of bacteria in some form) and differences in temperature could make it funky in time. You can use something as simple as a vitamin E capsule sliced down the middle and squirted into your mixture after everything is melted and stirring well after this addition. Then just pour into tubes, tins or pots. All Butters and oils have different shelf lives. For example, SAO spoils quickly, castor oil does not. I'll dig a link up for you later that might be a bit more specific.Buffalo? No kidding. I live in Niagara Falls! Quote
donna4909 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I read somewhere that bacteria cannot live in oil at all. I think it might have been at the soap dish? However, like mystical angel said, oils can go rancid. ROE or vitamin E can help with that. Quote
