denetteb
I just pulled the trigger on my first batch of candle making supplies! Yay! I have been making my own wax melts for about a year and have really enjoyed it, and I think I am ready to take it to the next level. I ordered from Peaks and bought some sample packs of IGI 4627, an HTP wick sample pack, a case of 8 oz square mason jars, and a case of 4 oz jelly jars. Oooooh I am so excited! Anywho, I thought that I would try to pass the time, as I try to patiently wait for my package to arrive, by typing up my candle testing sheet. This is the information I have so far (please keep in mind that I do not plan to use any additives or dyes…just jar, wick, wax, and fragrance).Jar – name and sizeWax – name and weight used to fill containerFO – name and % used, also noting actual weight usedWick – type and sizeTemp that wax was heated up toTemp that FO was addedTemp of jar at time of wax pourTemp of wax at time it was poured into container# of days cured before testingOk…this next part is the part of my testing sheet that I am sort of stuck on. I want to note what is happening during my burn, but I am stuck on how to document it. I have so far something like…Day #130 min into burningFlame heightMelt pool widthMelt pool depthScent throw1 hour into burning(note the same things as above, and then doing it again at 2 hours and then 3 and then 4 hours). Is that too much? Should I just take notes at the end of my first burn (aprox 3 or 4 hours)? Hmm…what do you recommend? Am I missing any bits of information, or am I on the right track? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
kimmeroo
You are on the right track! You def. want to burn each candle ALL the way down to the bottom..I some time's will not get a full melt pool until maybe the 2nd or 3rd burn (using soy), depending on the diameter of the jar you are using. Once you start actually burning you will get the idea of what to look for. Have fun!
Old Crab
You might want to add: First part - How long you mixed your FO before you poured - Brand of the FO. - Supplier of the wick, not all wicks are equal, even same type. when I test I burn 1" per hour, usually. I check and measure (metal ruler) distance of melt pool to glass and depth of melt pool every half hour. I tried to do it hourly but would miss what I was looking for. So, Second part - room test occurred - temperature of room - AC, fans, windows open, anything that could possibly cause a draft. - distance mp to glass, 1/2 hour increments - depth of melt pool, 1/2 hour incrementsMight seem like a bit too much, but, if you are concerned about temperature of container prior to pour these last ones shouldn't bother you, I would think. I do test burn around 20 candles at a time so I need lots of notes.
