  1. thanks everyone! It sure has been fun!! Maybe one day I'll be able to make my soaps as pretty as some I've seen on here.
  2. Wondering if you make only soap, only candles, or both. Thanks!
  3. Just wondering how many people do both? For me, I have no interested in doing candles, so that made me wonder what everyone else did.
  4. the pink one is grapefruit colored with, I think, alkanet root powder. The second is Goats milk scented with eucalyptus and spearmint.
  5. and is there a document i can read regarding the FDA regulations?
  6. No worries, BlackTie! LOL I'm glad Chuck came along b/c I never could have answered your question!
  7. I'm wondering how many bars of soap a 1 lb recipe should make. Mine average about 5 bars and they are pretty good sized bars.... 3.5 x 2 x 1 and they average out to be about 4.5oz bars. BUT I saw a really nice slab mold that is for 3 lb's of soap but it only make 9 bars! What am I missing?
  8. What qualities does it bring to the soaping party?
  9. what qualities does yogurt bring to the soap making party?
  10. Jewls, I saw on another soap forum a recipe for a turpentine stain stick! I want to try it just because it sounds so... odd!
  11. oh, I"m sorry! The video I referenced is for GM lotion.
  12. thank you. You've all given me great ideas!
  13. well, the little town I live in doesn't have anyone selling handmade soaps. So I guess I"m looking for the "tried and true" Blacktieaffair, what city are you in? Can I take a day trip to Aztec and smell their scents? I would SO do that!
  14. thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I found out to late how expensive this hobby is. I've spent probably $200 just to get started and that's without buying hardly any dyes, fragrances or a mold! But I'm hooked now! PS Saying a prayer for your marine on this memorial day!
  15. I'm looking for opinions on scents. I want scents that are pleasant, yet have mass appeal. What's your opinion? Also, whats the best way to get a scent without spending a ton of money on them? I ordered four, 4 oz, and I ended up liking only one. What a waste of money!
  16. I saw a terrific video on you tube by shockfamilyfarms on making goats milk lotion. I'd love to try it!
  17. I was also looking at the fels-naptha ingredients and it looks like they use a combination of coconut, palm and tallow.
  18. yes, 1-2T depending on how dirty it is. I've also heard of people adding phosphates into this mixture for extra cleaning ability. TSP is available at Lowes or Home Depot. And another friend found some powdered Purex fabric softener to add for scent.
  19. You know... I've just started making soap, too. I'm making 1 pound batches. It only makes about 5 or 6 bars of soap, but I like that I can try different recipes and not have a ton invested or a ton wasted if I don't like one.
  20. A couple more questions. if I were so do a HP soap in the crock pot, could I use a crock pot liner? Seems like that would make clean up much easier, but it may be very wasteful on the soap. Also, if I use my crock pot to make soap, then can I use it to cook food in? What about my stick blender, can I use that for food items? Or if I did HP in the oven, could I use my pan for food? It seems like I should be able to because lye is used for food items as well... pretzels, olives, hominy etc.
  21. Thanks, Barbara. I'm going to try your recipe. I've played with different amounts and slightly different oils and yours looked like the best formula. My friend has been soaping for a long time now, so I think she must know something about these oil combinations that I don't! We'll see!
  22. how do I superfat a recipe? Do I add extra oil at trace or is superfatting already included in the recipe?
  23. ok. Thanks. Its hard for me since I don't know the properties of all the oils right now.
