  1. I do find it interesting how people get so guarded. I can understand not handing out your recipes, I haven't started yet but I know it will be a long process of finding the right mixture of everything, color, scent, wax mix etc. . . well you all know the work it takes to get it right. So I can understand her not handing out that information. But for someone to think that it hasn't been done tells me that well they haven't found this board much less the rest of the interwebs. I have seen fights of companies who claim they have an original idea but you see someone else who had been doing that same idea for longer. I think anyone who does that should back it up or shut up. (And being the first person to TM something doesn't mean you were the first) Cause it makes the rest of us out there who just want to start a peaceful business look like big jerks. I think everyone can work in harmony with each other because well everyone has something to offer someone. One thing I learned from being a massage therapist is that one therapist can't help each person, there were clients I saw all the time, then there were clients I would see once then tell them about another therapist that might be able to help them better.
  2. ohhhhhh I wanna try these recipes! I've been thinking of making my own but afraid of how long it would last and how hard it would be but it seems like most the recipes are easier and faster then going to the store to buy it. I've used the Tom's of maine stuff and man did it burn, so I switched back to Dove until I get the courage to make it myself . But has anyone had any problems where it doesn't last all day? and what do you do to counter that? Maybe get a small container and leave it in your purse?
  3. Exactly, I should have probably re-worded the question? Any kind of success is success, I think a lot have forgotten you don't have to make millions or hundreds of thousands in order to be a success. And saying you can't count your partners income or any other income is just silly. What I'm look for is encouraging stories, even if it's something simple it's still something! In this day and age with all the change and craziness that's going in the world it's very discouraging especially if you want to start a business, but I'm seeing a lot of success's even with this crazy life so I want others to see what I see and not give up their dream of starting a business, or even supporting their habits.
  4. I was wondering if anyone has a success story from starting the home business to quitting their job to work full time on it? It's not so I can see how you do it and steal your ideas. But I love reading other success stories, they give me hope and encouragement for the future. Anyways no biggie if no one says anything just thought I'd throw out an idea.
  5. That is a really good point. The one thing that I'm noticing is some larger businesses selling on etsy. Which I thought etsy was for home crafters but I guess everyone can get big at some point in time. Has anyone else tried using etsy or any advice about that? I love etsy cause they do have a lot of information on how to start up a business, not even with etsy but photography, how to attract attention etc. . . Anyways anyone else have thoughts?
  6. I am actually going to say, first off I don't have an etsy store yet. But I personally think etsy would be a great starting point. It's a big site and has a lot of clicking traffic. And every week you can read about featured sellers who are showing some success with their page and maybe once every couple weeks they post a quit your day job which features a seller who well quit their day job. They also have been posting awesome sellers handbooks, they basically hand you a guide on how to be successful. Even if this isn't an ending point it gets your name out there without having to worry about building a website. As someone who just watches etsy right now you can look at other sellers who are selling similar things as you, see how much they sell for and see how many people have viewed an item. Some of the people I watch 1 item will have 50 views or more, that's like 50 people walking through your store, they can favorite stuff to buy later and all kinds stuff. If anything it's an easy place to post your stuff, and gives you a lot of encouragements from seeing others succeed. I can see how artfire is slow, it's not as big as etsy but I think it's free but I haven't looked into it much.
  7. Does anyone use the presto pot with soy wax? I only ask cause I'm looking at pictures and looking at the temperature gauge and it starts off with warm then 200. Does anyone have any problems with heat issues? I plan on using palm and soy, I know palm has a higher melting point the soy but will it be too hot for soy?
  8. Eh, not really interested in learning on the latest new "trend" on how people like to kill themselves. It's extremely sad. We are surrounded with so much negativity these for a long time now, so I don't normally like reading the news unless it's in the Science section *of yahoo* or the comics.
  9. I agree!! I loooooove this forum, I've been browsing every sec I can to learn as much as I can. I think what I love most, is I have not made any candles or B & B stuff yet, but it's helping me appreciate the kind of work that really goes into the products that you all love so much. I was like most people who figured it was "easy" to just melt something and toodaaa it's done. But it's nothing like that and that makes me so excited for the challenge. You all rock!
  10. Ohhh I see. I wish they were more clear on that part. But good to know.
  11. . . . . .I'm so confused! What is the next thing someone will shove up their noses!! But my question is if anyone knows if they are just using the term "bath salts" as a in general term or is this all bath salts? Or is there a particular brand? They mention a couple "names" but no brand. I was hoping to try learning to make bath salts, i just figured it was salt and essential oils. . . . .what is it that makes it so potentially dangerous? Edit* Totally forgot to put the link in there http://governor.delaware.gov/news/2011/1109september/20110930-bath_salts_ban.shtml
  12. Thank you! Finally lol, for a newbie it's really hard to read a code everyone knows when you are new. Thanks for the help, they weren't on my list to look at to begin with but good to know in the future if I am randomly shopping around.
  13. They do but they are in the bedroom not the main portion of the basement that I would be making candles in. Since I am in my experimentation stage anyways maybe I can convince them to let me use the kitchen if I promise to give them candles in return.
  14. Here's a question about working in the basement. I'm renting the basement from relatives and there's loads of space. How do you make sure there is sufficient air flow or ventilation if there is no windows. (Yea it's one of those basements that has 3 tiny windows but they aren't even in the main part of the basement where I would make candles.) But I wouldn't want to hurt my family or my lil kittay with the fumes, any suggestions?
  15. Hello! I'm new new new new new! This xmas I'll be getting my present of candle making supplies and was curious how many times you can melt and pour wax. For the practice is why I ask. I was thinking without adding dye and scent and just keep using the wax to learn melting and pouring, so re-melting wax (kinda to save money). Or should I just go with it and practice it all by experimenting with dyes and scent and once I make a candle that's it don't re-melt it? :yay:I'm excited. Love these forums btw.
