  1. thanx carrie, i am going to give it a try. I am kinda hoping to make a basic soap recipe that is good and i can just add things to if I want.
  2. i was reading up on palm oil and it said it saps a bit faster then most oils. in hp, tho, does it cook as well as the other oils? I have never used palm before, and want to start using it.
  3. ok how about this one. caster oil 10% coconut Oil 25% shea butter 5% Olive oil 20% Lard 25% palm 15%
  4. scented a question, to try and keep it at 50/50, what range should an oil be in the hard numbers? i need to find where my husband put all my books. when he decided to rearrange stuff.
  5. good massage oil...hmmmm gee carebear, all i can do now is picture my husband all white and slippery from crisco glaring at me and the more he glares the more it melts and makes a puddle at his feet:p soycrazy. I may give the shea a try after all cuz i think i read the same thing now that you mention it. :smiley2: question for you soycrazy, what do you think about soy oil. i have some organically produced soy oil. but i didn't care for its breakdown of numbers in the calc
  6. Thanx guys. carebear, I checked out that recipe and I have palm but no palm kernal and they are not quite the same are they? oh yeah, this is not my first recipe, its just that i don't make soap over the summer, too hot and too busy, cuz i do hp.
  7. castor oil 10% coconut oil 25% crisco 20% Olive 20% Shea Butter 5% safflower oil 5% palm 15% (what about dropping crisco for lard? I would probably use the lard instead)
  8. well if it makes it creamy, maybe i will give it a try. but i have to make sure i have enough left to make cream for my mother-in-law cream for her leg. how much do you use, about 5%?
  9. thats true, but i would rather save it for cream than in soap since it doen't do much for conditioning. i just don't want my soap to be too drying. was hoping to find some good oils in my stash that will help the soap from being too drying.
  10. thanx carebear. i couldn't remember if people used it much in soap.
  11. do you have to count beeswax in with the oils, or can it just be an additive...and what does it do for soap and for 2 pounds, about how much would one use.
  12. kinda wondered if that was it. i read somewhere for it to be benefical, its has to be the main oil outside of coconut oil.... thanx
  13. since shea butter does nothing really for conditioning in soap, why is it used??? I haven't made soap in a while but i am out and so are some people at work buying it. so i thought i would throw shea butter in, but i see no real reason to use it if you go by the numbers. i thought it would have some conditioning properties.
  14. thanx bethany. cuz i looked at mine and it has not additives either. i have really sensitive soap, (why i got into making my own) and borax never bothered my skin....i love it with well water with my laundry. i was also suprised to find it in creams and lotions.
  15. thanx vio, will have to check into it. that product disc did help explain.
  16. i see alot of liquid soap with borax in them. whats up that??? isn't borax a base and why would you want it in something you put on your skin or in your hair? i can see it maybe as part of a household cleaner. i use it with my laundry. but not directly on your skin. of course i could be wrong but i wouldn't want to use it myself.
  17. well thats the other problem care bear, if they do exist, sigh:shocked2:
  18. thanx carebear...the way my brace is setup, i can't get closer to my laptop, so i couldn't tell. i guess my main concern in all of this is that, if the qualities in a particular oil or butter is associated with the fatty acid, then I am probably going to lose that quality.
  19. does this caveman dude have a web site
  20. by the way, when you rebatch to add butters, do you soap last as long as normal? or do they ahve to be used faster.
  21. you are probably right. i have a batch i can't stand the smell of so i may try that and add a bit of eo to tone down the exotic smell
  22. I think i may keep my butters for creams. especially since the one i make for my friend's feet works so well for her. it certainly has been a good discussion. too bad we couldn't get a government grant to research what happens when one superfats LOL
  23. see that is my concern, i do HP and i don't want to add shea or mowrah butter if it really doesn't do anything because its properties are destroyed with saponification. but i supposes if i leave it to the end...it will make it go from the crock to the mold easier anyway. also, it seems that everyone who has tried my soap, loves the old fashioness of it. plus i feel better cooking it and letting it sit for about two weeks, just for the heck of it. at least i feel safer knowing it should definitly be ready to use. but top is right....we really need to research this kinda thing...i started tonight, and really didn't see much on it...but i am not the best googler and of course, i was watching the westminster dog show. i must judge all dogs...LOL
  24. thanx for all the input yinz guys....guess i need to really explore the chemistry part of soap making. I have a friend who is a chemist, will see if she has a recommendation on reading. she is usually up on alot of old techniques as far as chemistry goes.
  25. Thanx for that infor, that does help, but will print it out and read it again after I have had enough sleep and feeling a bit better later on.
