  1. i am thinking about lard for the first batch and i do have coconut oil on hand as well. also, finally went thru all the stuff i have printed out and am putting in sleeves, organizing and will read. once i make a few batches, my goal will be to come up with 1-3 base soaps to work with to add stuff to make the soaps more personalized. i am so excited
  2. what are your does and don'ts for making shampoo bars. cuz i would like to make them but some ppl say they leave a heavy film ect. i also want to make them for my dog and horses.
  3. we have all our insurance thru ***** **** (i use asteriks out of deference for all those ppl who had this insurance when the storm hit) and i am gonna ask them how much it is thru them.
  4. thanx Eugenia...i am just one of those ppl who learn better if i know the why and the wherefore for everything.
  5. will have to give lard a try...unfortunate for me, i still gravitate toward pastries made with lard...sigh. but they are soooo good.
  6. its just me carebear, i do patient teaching and trying to teach ppl that anything hydrogenated is a big no no that the word itself has taken on evil connotations. but none the less, even tho i am not exactly why solid oils are needed, i will be off to by crisco today:drool:
  7. thanx scented, i worded that last one wrong. but can you tell me the main reason for using heavy oils like crisco and lard? i can understand shea, mango and coco but only because their ability to moisturize, but what about the other solid oils? so far i haven't found an anser to that. its easier for me to do things if I understand the why and wherefor
  8. what i also need is midline range for hardness, cleansing, lather, iodine and whatever ins is. like, is a good hardness 40 or good lather 50.
  9. not sure if anyone else out there is like me in the fact that I need to know what all these percentages actually me to me in soap making real life. so i went here. http://www.soapcalc.com/SoapQualities.asp and needless to say, I ordered her book. (i am a book freak anyway) i am gonna go and explore her fact sheet a bit more.
  10. i realize some of the hard oils do the cleansing but what about lard, crisco, ect. what do these do to the soap itself. is it just a cheaper source of oil? at this time i was planning to use olive, canola, and coconut oil. with emphasis mainly on olive and canola. so you have a suggestion for another hard oil? and if i don't use a solid oil in the crockpot version, then when do i know to continue on with the soap making process...i don't remember seeing a temp, but will read again.
  11. yeah, just can't afford it. sigh, between house, car, medical , nurising....sheese.
  12. do we have to have 50% hard oils? what if we only have say 30%.....gosh i think i may finally be ready and then wham...there is a new thing i haven't a clue about. besides the coconut, what is the best, in one's opinion, for other hard oils. heck, and i wanted to make soap tomorrow, now i know i will have to go on a hard oil search.
  13. just a census to see how many ppl make and sell soap with or without insurance
  14. i am gonna do the hp tutorial on here, but i don't have any hard oils like crisco. i am trying to avoid anything that may be hyrdroginated (i am assuming hard oils are) even if the extra hydrogen atom is dispersed during processing the soap, its not a type of thing a person likes to see in any ingredients. but i digress, what is your favorite beginner hp recipe and how did it turn out
  15. ok,so with the recipe in hp, i just figure that out backwards then. but i will have several molds available just in case since i am over 50 and need learn things 14 times i think the reserchers say...LOL
  16. i am gonna use the hp tut for my very first batch. i am planning on using shoe boxes for slab molds. how many shoe boxes do i need? like say about a ladies size 9???
  17. thanx eugenia. thats the problem...you do all the research on the web, but finding a good place to validate what you learn is hard, therefore, THIS forum as been deemed by me as the one to ask ALL THE QUESTIONS I HAVE BEFORE I START!!!!!!
  18. thanx meridith. i am really getting excited. i have my dialysis outfit with the face mask and heavy gown, now if i could only find my rubbermaid gloves from dying fabric. wondered if my husband "borrowed" them
