How to build a "Basic" Wooden Soap Mold

This mold is a basic 3 lb. Mold.

The beauty of this box is the fact that the parchment paper fits perfectly in the box and the next day, the soap just pulls out of the box and peels off the soap very easily.

Note: This soapbox mold can hold 52 oz of oils, the water and lye with the lid sitting flush with the top. This will give you a finished soap size of 3 ½ x 2 ½ x (however thick you like to cut your bars)

These boxes can be used for regular CP, CPOP (in the oven) and HP!

Materials:

(1) 1 x 4 Board (the one pictured is White Pine)

(1) 1 x 6 Board (the one pictured is White Pine)

Nails or Wood Screws

Wood Glue

I make my boxes to fit Parchment Paper which is exactly 15 1/16th inch wide. You can make a box to fit Freezer paper, which is 18" long (your soap batches will need to be increased in size to get the final dimension of your finished product the way you want.

INSIDE dimensions are: 15 1/16" x 3 1/2" (Please note that a 1 x 4 board is actually 3/4" x 3 1/2")

1. Cut (3) pieces out of a 1x4 board: 15 1/16th long (this will be the lid, and 2 sides.

2. Cut (2) pieces out of the same 1 x 4 board: 5 1/8" long (this will be the 2 ends)

3. Cut (1) piece out of a 1 x 6 board: 16 9/16" long (this will be the base, note it will be the length of the sides plus the width of the end pieces) # Note: you can make the base longer and have a lip all the way around. I did.

4. Lid Handle: Cut a small piece from the leftover 1 x 4 board for the handle on the lid. You can also purchase a wooden dresser pull, or get fancy with a brass handle pull if you want. Just make sure you don't let the nail or screw be in contact with the soap in the box.

Putting it together:

Glue and Nail. Or use wood screws. See pictures.

You can take this basic model and change things around. Or make them out of hardwood too! If you want the lid to sit on top of your mold, cut a lid out of a 1 x 6 Board and make it the same length as the 1 x 6 base.

I made this (my first time making bath bombs) and they turned out great! Not one cracked and they were rock hard. I used sweet almond oil because I didn't have any safflower oil. This recipe is here on this forum in the B&B recipe section.

How much should I add to a 5 pound batch? Does it depend on the ingredients and when should I add it? At trace?

How to make Whipped Unrefined Shea Butter

**11 weighed ounces of unrefined shea butter

2 ounces grapeseed oil

Rice Powder - 1 tablespoon (or cornstarch)

Mixer with whip attachment

Access to a refrigerator

**As an alternative try using 2 ounces of extra virgin olive oil, 1 ounce grapeseed and 1 ounce jojoba oil, adjust the 4 ounces listed above to these.

Stay away from my husband!!! He gets the notion to get out his lathe every 6-8 months, and I end up with another hunk of wood that looks pretty but serves absolutely no purpose.

He must have a wood lathe. I would love to play around with a wood lathe. Does he make candleholders for you? I made parts for ships and submarines, but not out of wood.

I heard that Glad press'n seal works great.

Or maybe use a cheese slicer, the kind with the wire and the roller. The kind used to cut Velveta cheese. Slice a long piece from a block and then cut into strips. Or slice a short piece off the end of a block if it would belong enough and cut it into strips. Then twist it around a straw.

DonC you must work in a machine shop. That's what I did in the navy. I'd kind of like to get behind a lathe and milling machine again LOL

Shaving soap

To modify your own recipe, just take your basic soap recipe and add about 2 teaspoons of Bentonite or other clay for every pound of soap in the batch.

They all look great! My favorite is the one with the dual color. How do you pour it? I think I remember reading something about spraying the top of the first layer with something before adding the second layer???

Is it one ounce of FO to one pound of oils?

I don't know about your recipe, but I'm thinking you're kind of heavy on the animal fats? I really like butters in my soaps- cocoa, shea, etc, something conditioning. I do use lard also, but my recipe is only 25 percent lard...

LOL I am "addicted" too I have only made one batch of soap and it turned out great. It had unrefined shea, PKO, coconut, sweet almond oil, caster, etc... I milled some of it and liked the original batch better.

I just ran 100% beef tallow through the lye calculator and was surprised what I saw... I am not sure what all these numbers mean but isn't this pretty good of the hardness and the conditioning?

Either that or use this unscented and rebatch it with a lot more butters and such. The beeswax ought to let it come out of the moulds nicely, tho. Maybe if you rebatch you can use some lanolin and/or glycerin and/or grapeseed oil and/or sweet almond and/or herbs and/or shey or other butters as the last poster suggested.

I may give that a try. I just didn't like milling it. I liked it best the first time around when it was so easy to pour into the mold instead of spooning it in LOL

Would this make a good soap? The reason I am asking is I can get the first 3 ingredients free. I talked to the butcher where my daughter works and my BIL is a beekeeper. The Safflower and Coconut is just something I put in the lye calculator. And can change them. Also is beeswax good in soap?

I was going to stay away from tallow and lard but after reading everything here I have changed my mind
