  1. I bought 2 pounds of a foaming bath butter base. It says it has a preservative in it but if I make a sugar (or salt) scrub with it I will need to add an additional preservative.

I know I add .5% but.... do I add it for the two pounds of base or weigh it after I add the sugar and add .5% of the total batch weight? I am going to add a lot of sugar, I want a wet sand kind of consistency.

I think I add to the total weight but I want to make sure.

    Thank you!

    Debbie

  2. I have a question while we are on the subject...

So what you guys are saying is that if your flash point is low on a fragrance, then you would probably need to add more in your soap for a strong scent? And if it is high then you would add less? I'm still kind of new to soaping, less than a year. :cheesy2: I know it depends on how strong the fragrance is, but it this 'basically' correct?

  3. I made pine tar for the 1st time about a month ago. My DS was laughing so hard at me mixing and gagging!!! That stuff smells so rank! I mixed a belnd of lavender, tea tree, and patchouli EO's to try to mellow out the scent. It turned out really nice and I've got a few people testing it now. I won't be looking forward to having to make it again any time soon though!

It smells like you are having your kitchen floor paved LOL

It's hard to believe how nice it mellows out, I like it unscented.

  4. I think they used an upright log mold with dividers. You can make a divider using thin plexiglass.

I wanted to put a picture here of a soap make with an upright log mold using one divider in the middle I can't find it right now. If I find it I will come back and post it. It was a blue and yellow soap. After he pulled the divider out he took a long dowel rod and swirled it twice in a circle pattern.

    Edit

I can't share the picture because of a copywrite but I can post the link, which is even better because you can see how he did it.

The picture that the OP posted, the third color looks like they poured it from a high distance after removing the divider and swirled a little different. They are not showing the whole bar, maybe the brown didn't go all the way down. I don't see how it could in an upright mold. :smiley2:

  5. I make soap and know nothing about making candles. I'm not getting into making them except for beeswax votives and tarts.

I have about 30 pounds of fresh beeswax that I have to render, my brother in law is a bee keeper and I get all his wax. I got some today. (Too bad I don't like honey :smiley2:) I will use most of it in lip balms, etc... but would like to make a few candles. Not for sale, just for myself and family. I was told that I shouldn't make big candles in a jar because beeswax burns hot because it takes a big wick and would break the jar. Is that right?

Please tell me if this is wrong.

I melt the wax, (it will already be melted when I render it) scent it and pour it is a clamshell or a votive mold with a wick, correct? Can anyone reccommend a wick size (for a votive) or type and tell me the best place to get them?

And what % of fragrance oil should I use? I want them to be strong. I like vanilla, cinnamon, and apple pie scents in candles.

Should I color them or leave them natural? I read that burning beeswax candles is actually good for you. Something about negative ions or something like that. They are supposed to clean the air.

    Thank you!

  6. I got a pound of DEET Buster Lemon Dream from EOU a few weeks ago and make some HP soap and a whipped shea butter for my grandson. The bugs tear him up. Not anymore, this stuff works and it smells a lot better than I thought it would. Not bad at all. I made the whipped shea because I didn't think the soap would be enough, since it's rinsed off.

  7. Here is what I was told... LOL I asked the same thing.

Pour your first layer in the mold and then make your second layer and pour on top of it, by then it will have set up a little. (Make two batches of soap). It worked for me.

Maybe someone has a better way and will post.

  8. I have palm kernal flakes in every soap recipe I make and love them. And there are so easy to store without having to refrigerate.

I heard that using PKF instead of coconut oil was more gentle. I don't know if that is true or not, but it sure was a lot easier to use. Just pour instead of dig and scoop. ;)

  9. It turned out well :yay: and it smells nice, not real strong. I used 1 oz PPO I hope it keeps the bugs from biting him. I think I will make him some whipped shea with it just for 'extra' protection. I will let you know if it works. I finally made my first HP soap.

I love the idea of being able to use this right away (HP). I will give my daughter a bar to use on him and let the rest cure for a little while. I already have it out of the mold it is still very warm. I will cut it in a little while.

  10. Thanks Meridith! I thought so but wanted to be sure. I'm off to make soap. I ususlly make CP but I am trying HP today, wish me luck ;) I want it to be usuable sooner than CP. I am making it for my grandson with the Lemon Dream Deet Buster, (the same that is in the co-op) the bugs just love to bite him. And I have to say... this stuff smells pretty good, better than I expected. I hope it works as well as they say it does. I bought a pound of it LOL
