  1. 4794 is a little harder and doesn't hold as much FO as 6006 or 223. 4794 is a 2/pour wax and by adding a container wax to it, you can do one pour for your tarts. Straight container wax would not release from the molds. I am getting the "best" from each type of wax. Carole

Thank you so much for explaining that to me. I wasn't thrilled with the throw I was getting from the 4794, although it is much better than when I used straight paraffin. Can you tell me at what point you blend these? Melted or before? If you do it before, how to you get an accurate measurement?

  2. Just use a pillar/votive wax 2/3 and 1/3 container wax. I use 2/3 4794 and 1/3 6006 or 223. Carole

I'm still pretty new to tart making. May I ask the advantage of mixing these two waxes? I use IGI 4794 only. When blending, at what point do you do this? After it is melted? If before, how do you measure it accurately? Thanks so much.

  3. Kristi,

The wax I'm using is from Yaley's. It's their premium candle wax. The samples I am using are from Indiana Candle Supply, Bittercreek, IFT and Lebermuth. I am using 1 1/2 oz pp. I'm adding the fragrance at about 170 degrees. Is this too hot? I believe this wax is just paraffin. I used it because it is the only one available locally and I was trying to save shipping costs. Is there an additive to help throw? I've spend a fortune already in samples, but am looking forward to the samples sales! Thanks for your help!

  4. As posted before, I have been pouring and testing tarts. So far I've poured about 24 scents using Yaley's premium candle wax (as this is available locally and I don't have to pay shipping). I did not use any additives. I'm finding that many of the fos smell wonderful cold but do not have a great hot throw. Some are very exceptional while others are not so good. Is this common to get so few good ones out of a batch this size or is it just me? At first I thought I had candle nose, but I put one in the other day and it filled my entire kitchen/dining, living room area in a short period of time and lasted a very long time. I wish they all were that good!

  5. I'm using Yaley's premium candle wax. For some reason I just can't figure out how much wax to use so I can just use the entire 1 oz sample of FO. Usually when I use 1 lb. of wax, I use 1 1/2 oz. of oil, but I'm having difficulty translating this to determine how much wax to use for 1 oz of oil using the same ratio.

  6. What determines how much FO a wax can hold? I was testing FO's from several different companies and found that while using the same exact calculations, some oils weeped and others did not. Also, I have many samples FO's in 1 oz. increments. How much wax should I use to hold the entire 1 oz? (does that make sense? I'm terrible at math!)

  7. I don't give birthday gifts, but always send a nice Christmas gift. She works very hard for me throughout the year and it's just my way of showing her how much I appreciate her help. I wholesale primitive crafts, which she loves, so I always make her something extra special and one of a kind.

  8. I was at Joann's etc. last weekend and purchased the neatest silicone molds. One was a 24 cavity gingerbread mold and the other was a 24 cavity Christmas tree molds. These are Wilton molds, which I am assuming are ok for making tarts. I made my first batches in them and they turned out really nice. They retail for $9.99 but were on sale for 25% off, which I thought was a terrific price for silicone molds. Check them out! IF you sign up for the Joann's mailing list, they always have 40% coupons in them, for even more savings.

  9. After visting this board for months and asking questions and getting wonderful advice, I'm ready to test my tart scents. I'm going to send a packet to 7-8 different people and have them fill out a questionairre. I will ask them to rate it on cold throw, hot throw, appearance, overall satisfaction. Are there any other questions I should be asking?

  10. I'm a bit confused. I have been wanting to try some silicone molds. But, really how many of these things do you need if you want to make these for sale? I mean, with only a couple of molds, wouldn't it take forever to make enough product to be profitable? If I get a 5 cavity tart mold, how long would I have to wait before I can pop them out of the mold and repour more? For those of you that use molds, how many of the same molds do you have? If I can only make 10-15 tarts (by the time they cool) in an hour, how am I going to make any $$$$$ !

  11. A sales rep usually only sells wholesale to shops. They standard fee is 15% off the wholesale price. I pay my reps once my customer pays me. You have to figure your commission into your costs. It seems like a lot, but it's a lot cheaper than doing wholesale shows, in my opinion.
