  1. I understand that testing wicked candles takes lots and lots of time before even thinking of selling them. But what about tarts? Would the same rule apply? I just wouldn't think that you would have to test them for months and months before being able to come to the conclusion that they are "safe" and won't burn someones house down. Aren't you really just testing them for scent throw? I'm just asking...curious ONLY....please don't anyone crucify me thinking that I'm off to sell my tarts after only a few weeks of doing this. TIA, Amber
  2. Yes Sir!!!! Didn't realize there was a message limit...so sorry.
  3. I'm brand new to all of this too....asking questions almost daily. With all the different waxes out there, I didn't want to order 50lbs of one type just in case I didn't like it. I wouldn't want to be stuck with that much wax if I couldn't get it to work for me. So, I would recommend ordering the smallest amount that they have, or just get one of the starter kits. Good Luck and welcome! Lots of great people here!
  4. I will eventually get a presto....I just don't have oodles of money and am trying to use what money I have on wax, fo, etc. I just figured someone had come up with some sort of method that worked. My hubby took some bread ties, twisted them all together and then tied it to the end of the thermometer....the other end got tied around the handle of the pour pot. It works somewhat, but I still end up having to hold the thermometer when I stir or I can't see the temp. I was really frustrated with the double broiler at first...one hand to hold the thermometer and the other to hold the pot cuz it was bouncing all over the place....that left me with no hands to stir.....then, I read on a post that I could put a metal cookie cutter in the pan and then set the pour pot on that to stabilize....what a lifesaver that was. So, for now, I don't mind the double broiler method....just a little frustrated with the thermometer.
  5. Okay, so because I'm still new I'm only using small amounts of wax to make small projects for testing purposes. The largest amount of wax I'm melting at a time is 1lb. I use the double broiler method. Since I'm using a small amount of wax, I can't just clip my thermometer on the side of the pot because it won't reach the melted wax. I'm having to stand there and hold the thermometer down in there, which makes stirring difficult....not to mention, I end up with an unwanted facial. I know there's an easier way, or you guys would all be bald from pulling your hair out in frustration. So, how do you do it when you only have a small amount of wax to melt?
  6. I'm still brand new to all of this too, and for now, I'm using the double broiler method (as shown in the photo of your previous post)....it's working fine for me. I will more than likely end up buying the presto pot, but I wanted to make sure I was really going to like this candlemaking stuff....and, although it's only been about a month.....I'M HOOKED!!! I also would recommend a kit....I bought everything separately before finding this board and even knowing that there were kits out there.....it ended up being more expensive.
  7. Thank you....I knew I could count on you to help me again! You're awesome Homecomfort!!! :highfive:
  8. Okay, just read somewhere that I should use a 2.5"-3" container....I feel stupid asking, but is this the diameter of just the opening of the jar or at the widest part?
  9. Okay, so I have some KY Perfect Blend wax to play around with. The only wicks I currently have are RRD 37. Hopefully these work with this wax....if not, I have a sampler pack coming that I've ordered. Anyway, I have several different size containers lying around that I could use, but I don't know how to judge what size to use based on the size wick that I have. So, for this type of wick, what size container would I use? Thanks in advance for your help!
  10. Homecomfort....now I like that idea!! Hmmmm...now I have a reason to order mexican food to go more often...they put their salsa in those little things.
  11. These are all great tips....thank you for sharing! I think once I master the art of all of this that I will consider doing the clamshells for customers and keep the cute flower-shaped ones for me....
  12. I just wish clamshells were cuter! I know that sounds dumb, but I happen to like the flower-shaped tarts....I realize they all get melted the same, but it still makes me happy to see a pretty design beforehand. Yes, my hubby thinks I'm weird too!
  13. Prior to deciding that I wanted to make my own candles, I purchased some tarts from a lady on ebay. She sold 6 of them together in a cello bag, but each of them were individually wrapped in what appeared to be saran wrap. I've read on here that saran wrap is not the way to go, but I was wondering....when you guys wrap tarts up in a cello bag without individually wrapping them first, do they not stick to each other (especially in the heat of the summer)???
  14. Thank you so much tangerine!!!! Will definitely try that!!!
  15. hmmmm.....if I put my tarts in the cello type bags, could I then store them together in larger #5 plastic containers? I'm just thinking that I might not have room for several of the gladware containers.
  16. I knew you guys would be the ones to ask....as usual! thanks bunches!
  17. I found a seller on ebay who is selling 9.6 oz. Hex Glass Jars, Jelly Jars with Gold Lug Caps They come 12 to a case for a total of $17....is this a good price or are there other places cheaper than that?
  18. I just read in another post that people buy the Gladware containers for storage....simple enough. Thanks for all the help!
  19. Thank you very much! I'll go order a few sample packs before hubby gets home!
  20. Every corner I turn in this hobby.....BAM....I get hit by a truck! Still gonna keep on truckin' though.... :tiptoe: Sooooo.....now what? I can't possibly buy a container for every scent that I intend on trying. How do you guys store your tarts?
  21. That definitely helps....thank you. Should I just test one type at a time, or should I buy a sample pack of all that Peak has to offer?
  22. Okay, I read that I can store my tarts in the plastic containers that have a #5 in the triangle on the bottom. My question is this....can I store tarts with different scents in the same container or will the scents blend together? I will be receiving several FO's in the mail shortly and will want to make several different kinds of tarts. I want to be able to store them all without having to buy multiple containers. Thanks for your suggestions!
  23. Forgive my ignorance, but how do I do this? If you don't attach a wick to the bottom, where do you attach it?
  24. I keep seeing all these numbers associated with all the different wicks....what do they all mean? Here's what's getting me....I went to Peaks website, and for example, there will be several 6" wicks with the same letters, but all will have different numbers attached to them. ????
