  1. Is there anyone out there that uses KY125 and pours hot? Just wondering what results you have gotten by pouring it that way. I currently use the 125 and pour slushy and have great results. From a time perspective was wondering about the effects of pouring hot-I know the tops may not be perfect, but wondered how the burn was affected. Vickey at KY has said that they may not burn properly when poured hot. I have never really tested that out for myself. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tracey
  2. I tried one last night that must have been about that short-I over trimmed, or so I thought and it did wonderfully. That just may be the trick!!!!! Thanks again. Tracey
  3. I have been trying to leave them long enough to get a good start and then trimming. I think I am going to try a few tonight with the wick a little shorter. My daughter accidently broke a wick off in one of my coffee mugs and I figured it wasn't even long enough to get a decent enough melt to yank it out and replace, but the wick did a wonderful job. Now that's not saying it will work that well on all, but I was amazed that a wick that was that short got a decent flame height and burned so well. I love these wicks and use them along with regular CD's. Haven't tried LX's for a long time and have never really used the hemp wicks. Thanks again- Tracey
  4. Hi everyone- I was wondering if anyone could tell me where a 62C fits into the CD size scale? Is it hotter or cooler than a 20, in between the 20 and 22. This is a soy/cottonseed blend. Also, where a htp1212 falls in there. Thanks Tracey
  5. Does it affect the burn any to have them really short. I have always left my wicks a little longer for the first burn and then trimmed. I may have to try that on a few tonight and see what happens. Thanks Tracey
  6. It's just terrible how much variance there is in batches these days. it's hard for to decide whether I want to continue on with the struggle of the 125 or try something else. I may end up ordering samples of a few different ones to test. I know that won't tell me if there will be variations from batch to batch, but at least I'll know if it's "any better" so to speak. I re wicked a few of my testers last night-ones that I had burned only a couple of times. I wicked up and had luck in getting good melt pools and throw-very good throw. In these I didn't notice the jars getting as hot as they did when I tried the 62C in the 9oz hex. I wicked these with CD's. Now I am deciding if I want to retest with the Crisco added or just wick up. The thought of going through all those pounds of wax again to test with Crisco-I just am not sure. Especially when the next batch may be fine. Yes, I noticed too that the wax was much harder than normal-this by far is the toughest batch I have had. The battle goes on. I have about 20 testers to pour yet this weekend. Hopefully they will test well. Thanks Jeannie - keep the faith! Tracey
  7. Yes Vicky- Do tell on the new soy waxes coming out... would love to know about them. I found a supplier only an hour from me that carries EL Soy. It seems to be a popular choice-opinions on this. This supplier also carries I believe Simply Soy. That sounds new to me, but it may have been around awhile. Thanks again everyone!!!!! Tracey
  8. This has been a long and frustrating month testing new scents for a show and discovering the wicking issues and having to test everything over. I am contemplating adding some crisco with this batch of wax to see if it's any easier to burn. I only have a few samples of RRD's at home and am in a financial situation right now where I can't order much of anything more for a while yet. I have a good supply of CD's and CDN's and cotton's at home. I did try one of my more difficult scents with a 62C in the 9oz hex and while it worked wonderfully, the glass got awefully hot, more so than usual and that "scares" me a bit. Granted I did let it burn for 8 hours, but I know there are a lot of customers out there that will do the same-light them in the morning and let them burn all day-that's why I test burn for that long. Have you ever tried adding Crisco???? Thanks bunches Tracey
  9. Those who use this or tried it - opinions on hot throw, cold throw, pouring temp, etc. Also opinions on the service of the supplier. What are their fragrances like?? I am researching some new soy waxes and thinking about making a switch from the wax I currently use. Too many wicking issues as of late. Thanks Tracey
  10. Thanks! I had thought about the "chimney effect" on ym way home-not in that term, but how you take the jar into effect that way. I have posted on the KY board and got some words of encouragement. I also posted a very lengthy piece on my initial results along with the added frustrations. I will wait and see if I get any additional encouragement or guidance so to speak. Thanks again Henryk Tracey
  11. the fry pan idea that is. I knew I wouldn't sell any with no scent and color-I just wanted a starting point for which wick worked with nothing added or if one was too hot, too weak for that container. That would eliminate choices. I'll think about the frying pan idea and maybe give that a whirl. Tracey
  12. Thanks for the help I use liquid dyes from BCN. I have some I made 3 months ago that are just showing signs of it. But some I made only a week ago are doing it already. Not sure if maybe I poured the clear a liitle too warm on this last batch. I haven't tried the blocks before-where do you get them? Tracey
  13. Hey everyone- I feel foolish even posting this as I have been making candles for 4 years and have never had such issues with wicking as I have had in the past months. I use KY125 and have had many frustrating evenings with my test burns as of late-even some tried and true aren't that great. I have CD, CDN and cotton wicks. So... I haven't been able to figure out where the problem is coming from so I decided to do some experimenting-probably what I should have done a long time ago. I just don't remember ever having so much trouble with wicking before. I poured up some candles with no color and no scent, some with just color and some with just scent. I also poured one with no color and scent, but with some Crisco added (someone had suggested this a while ago to help with some hard to burn combos). Anyway, I plan to burn them tonight and document all the usual stuff-burn rate, timing on melt pool, depth of melt pool, etc. I am looking for some guidelines as to how to apply what I get to wicking “regular” candles. I am so used to making them with the color and scent and making adjustments from there. Say, if one of the no color, no scent candles develops it’s melt pool etc within the 1”/hour rule and maintains it, should I go up a size when adding fragrance and color????? Or should I use the same wick on light color and lighter oil??? My brain is on overload and it’s not thinking logically right now-after going through too many test candles and having nothing seem to work right. That’s why I thought I’d start from the beginning so to speak. I am trying to determine where the “problem” is coming from. I have actually contemplated not coloring my candles at all, but I love the colors. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks Tracey
  14. I made these great confetti soaps for kids and am discovering that my beautiful curls and chunks are becoming whiter and the clear soap becoming a rainbow of the colors I put in the chunks. While they look really kind of neat, I would like to find some non bleeding soap dyes. Any suggestions Thanks Tracey
  15. Anyone use these in their soy or a soy/cottonseed blend? I have been doing some testing with these and I like them, but wondered if anyone has had to wick higher than they normally would with them... I know they bend over at the tip, like the htp's and regular CD's, but some bend almost all the way into the candle-is there a way to keep them from curling so bad???? When the curl I just take a little knife and prop it up and it usually stays really well, but I can't expect that a customer would know to do that, nor would I want them too...... Thanks Tracey
  16. Thank you! That really helps me with my list and gives me some good ideas. Thanks again! Tracey
  17. Hi all- I will be doing my first craft show next month. I was wondering what your best sellers were fragrance wise in bath n body. I plan to have soaps, bath butter, body butter, body glaze and bath gel. I will also have candles. Any advice or lead in the right direction is greatly appreciated. Tracey
  18. I have been selling for 3 years-although not in mass quantities or anything. Now I am starting to do some shows (first one in November) and have a greater interest in my products. I have total faith in what I sell and I test my candles extensively I have read some mixed opinions. My candles are labeled as are my bath n body products-all ingredients and "warnings" so to speak. I know I totally cover myself that way. Thanks to help ease things a bit and I'll do a search and see what I come up with. Happy Friday Tracey
  19. I have researched this a bit on some other boards. I wondered if anyone new of insurance companies that will cover bath n body products as well as candles. I am located in Minnesota. I am hesitating in contacting my agent(independent agency with lots of resources) for fear it will jeopardize my current homeowners coverage. Opinions/help/suggestions.... Does anyone out there do shows, sell on line, etc without any? Also, does any one know if you should set yourself up as an LLC would this help protect you in a lawsuit should one arise??? Thanks Tracey
