  1. this is just my oppinion but i have dealt with the irs enough to know how the government works. believe it or not they will come after the small guy a whole lot faster than the big guys, we cannot afford to pay the high priced lawyers to fight our casses and thier for they get thier money faster and with a lot less cost. and take the warning first time with a grain of salt i guess it would all depend on the guy who is looking into the case, normally they only respond to complaints but if the guy is in a bad mood what have you you may get the book thrown at you. ignorance is not an excuse, i have heard this as have many others so when you learn of a new set of rules governing you try and incorperate it as soon as possible. its been my personel experiance that the government is not a nice thing.
  2. make sure that you are getting the same quality of material in the kit first then look at peaks website order the kit and check shipping if the price is cheaper go with them. but if you are getting granulated wax or what not then definatly go with peaks
  3. just a quick question does anyone have a link to a good shrink wrap supplier for votive candles. know i have scene it on here but cant find again. in particular looking for one that is open top and bottom atleast some what for scent throw. dont want bags with the top of the bag sticking up we are planning to package in acetate boxes. thanks in advance
  4. i would just like to say thank you to everyone on this forum especially the veterans who willingly go out of thier way to help one another and people they do not know. you have saved me a lot of time and money with you're well thought out honest advice tips tricks and all that jazz. i dont post often normally find what i need with a search but me and the wife often look here first when we run into problems. thank you all almost feels like family here with out the politics honest some times brutal honesty is rare in the world but this is not the case here. its refreshing and uplifting. sometimes you just need to hear a thank you and we rarly say it enough. :yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:
  5. when me and my wife first started this i thought we would have ten scents in ten sizes blah, blah in a week or two. after reading this and learning a lot on this forum. we are almost 7months into this we have two scents in votives that i like and am comfortable with one jar real close and another votive really close. i figure at this rate it will be another year before i am ready to start selling. as to pricing thier are a lot of formulas on this website the above link is a great one but that one even does not try and recover the cost of ra and d and testing that goes into this. short cutting in that department can be a death knell for you buisiness. my suggestion is to test a lot, test some more and go slowly you can lose any chance of a long term buisiness by rushing, not to mention ruin someones life if you sell an untested product for a quick buck. i thought i would have a good second income quickly instead it has cost me hundreds of dollars and hours and im not close. my 2 cents from some one who is hoping someday to recover some of what i have spent so far. give a man a fish he eats for a day teach a man to fish he eats every day. this is field you can make money in but you have to spend money first.
  6. letter says july 15, should be june hope its a typo on our side only good luck with her, sorry for your inconvienience but thx for the headsup. take her to couort forty dollers from you and how many adds up to some seriuse money.
  7. i would not do it with out insurance as you can be sued if they knock the burner over and pour it on the carpet etc. you would probably win this case but you would need to hire a lawyer and take time out for court. not worth it let the ins. company fight the battle and it wont go anywhere but if it does you are covered. my 2 cents
  8. for us it would be that we stayed focused on the goal we have. she started spending money on scents, colors and differant molds jars and assorted stuff. she wanted to start with votives she ended up doing dozens of scents in pillars, containers and votives with a net result of not accomplishing any testing just burned up wax and money. stay focused on you're objective test and test when you have made a product that you feel is safe and meets you're standards move on to the next scent, color combo and repeat. bouncing all over will only delay what you want in the end. six months into this we have two differant votives that meet our standards and one container ( i hate them, she loves them, hex jars are a pain) no where enough to start selling, however she has a list of 32 scents she wants to make 1 oz at a time. 500 a year in insurance going to waste. had to buy it or lose the house insurance made the mistake of asking about how much it would cost and they claim that if the candle experiment burns down the house house ins will not cover it because we are trying to run a buisiness. my arguement that a buisiness means money coming in didnt fly oh well. stay focused, test test test, get insurance and enjoy
  9. thier is a link somewhere on here showing the main suppliers. you want someone that is both close and has a good relationship with its customers. shipping will eat you alive when it comes to wax and stuff. one time purchases i get from peaks because i like their customer service and speed with which the things show up. wax i get from another supplier because it costs so much to ship, i didnt think it was a big deal at first but it really adds up. as far as a good site to learn from you are on it, the people on this site are full of great advice to almost any question you have and can normally point you in the right direction for specific problems and questions. this is always my first stop for advice. by the way when you need a moral booster to help you get past you're latest mistake the people here always step up and relate how they have done far worse, the same thing and often tell you how to fix it. best people in the industry, hobby and the web. remember have fun, be safe and check back often.
  10. dont like zinks tested a bunch of candles had a few we thought were promising. have to start over going to cd's
  11. does anyone have any recomendations for a good granulated single pour parafin wax. wife doesnt like the slabs. has to be a preblend. thanks for replys in advance.
  12. must be nice you cant pay me enough to go outside low teens for highs and snow. cucumber melon in the pot. enjoy the warmth
  13. thx for the link to the supplier, 350 ouch but have been looking for them in other areas and cheapest by far.
  14. love the site and the people are a ton of help my only complaint is you have to have x amount of posts to get axcess to some areas, the search option normally answers all of my questions and i have very little reason to post. so i have to add my two cents in on posts like this. thanx all for the advice you have saved me a ton of money on expermentation, still need to test but the candles have a chance from the word go
  15. we started with this candle making machine, it now sits in the corners the refill kits cost twenty dollers and you get enough to make four candles. the main concern i have with it is thier is no temp control on the melter so you can easly get a flash fire if you are not paying attention or get distracted for a minute. bought my starter kit from cajun dont remember how much around 50.00 we bought a bunch of scents and a case of wax at the same time. my advice spend the extra money and get a good kit, everything you get can be used for a long time where as the machine from candle creations will collect dust if she likes the hobby/ buisiness my 2cents anyways
  16. we just finished testing our first batch of votives. were using gi4794 with uv inhibetor and liquid dye and two types of zink wix. while testing them they had good throw, the one burned better than the other but the candles made a chanel on one side or the other and all the wax leaked into the votive holder. making it a container candle in essence. other than that everything went well both types of wix did this so my question is is this normal?
  17. thx saw this before but could not find it again found a wax supplier 40 miles from home. say good buy to shipping on that anyways:D
  18. thx everyone for the input. we are going to do the votive candles first from peak we will be using parafin and thier scents cucumber melon is her faverite right now. gonna start withone of thier starter kits and move on from thier. when i say i get to do the research i get to read through all the posts and write down all the information i find, at first i got to just print whole posts. less and less of that happening but she then reads the printouts and any posts that are really interesting. i paint 15mm world war two and napolianic figures on average i use 37 colers per fig and i am anal about perfection i have a checklist for each fig, engineer by trade its the process, always the process. anyways we have boards and such and no one gives one another as much information as you guys freely give out to new comers its refreshing and makes me feel much more comfortable knowing thier is this much knowledge and experiance is just a few mouse clicks away. thanks for that. as far as making money i would like to but looking into what we have to go through to get thier it may be several years before we get to that point. again thank you for the input and positive reinforcement.
  19. ok my wife has been making candles for around a year, costing me way to much told her she had to scale back or make money from them. So im the one doing the research, when i threw out the idea i figured candles are just wax some color and scent and a piece of string. ok i was wrong ill admit this but every one says test test and test some more im ok with that but unfortunatly i have no real idea what she should be testing for? she was using a candle kit bought from walmart that uses wax pellets and cost a fortune. we have not yet purchased anything of a larger scale and truthfully i think i opened a can of worms i probably should have left alone. she is set on the idea and if we are going to do it we are going to do it right so i want to know what to look for when testing. any help you can offer wouold be great thx
