  1. I only make my wickless 4 ounces. It melts faster with less wax, and I don't think you need the 8 oz to get a great scent. As long as the container is wide, you get a great scent throw with only 4 oz.
  2. The ones I made from soy and parrafin did not shrink. Did not need a repour. The wick may have something to do with the shrinkage I think.
  3. I thought about the 4 oz jelly jars for wickless. Thought maybe the opening was not big enough. Where do you get your tins? I haven't found any tins for good prices unless you order in quantity. The wide mouth 1/2 pint masons seem like they wound work good, but hate to use 8 oz of wax for a wickless, when 4 oz would do if it is a wide container.
  4. Kelly, Sorry, I just re-read your post. You use 8%. I am going to try 6% and see if that helps. I make my tarts a light color. That helps disguise the frosting too. I do not mind frosting. When I used to buy soy candles. I actually looked for frosting. I knew they had a lot of soy that way.
  5. Kelly, How much FO are you using? Yankee tarts I used to buy lasted so much longer. I wish I could figure out how to get more scent time out of my tarts.
  6. I don't and haven't had any problem. I use soy and supposedly there is a warning on the candle warmer not to use vegetable waxes. Are you talking about air relief holes for the wax shrinking or for another reason?
  7. Do you use a soy for tarts? I have been using Ezsoy and don't like how they don't come out of the burners easily. I was thinking Ecosoya PB.
  8. I am pretty new to this too. I have read the boards religiously. If you don't make wicked candles, you can save a lot of time and money in testing. First you have to decide if you want to make parrafin or soy. I chose soy. I know a lot of people use J223 for containers if making parrafin. I use Ezsoy from Bittercreek. I am making my own for same reason you are. I like to give candles for gifts and to use them myself. I do save money making them myself and I know they are good quality because of wax and FO I use. What I would do is get a sampler pack of scents. I read the boards and see what are the strongest scents. Bittercreek has a great board. You can do a search for "strongest scents". Of course I would try to order from a company that would have the best shipping for you. Bittercreek happened to be lowest shipping for me. Most of the suppliers sites have instructions for the wax they sell. You could also make tarts for tart burners, they are easy and make nice gifts. Just keep reading the boards and you'll learn a lot of tips that will be helpful. It is a hobby for me, and I am really enjoying it. Its so fun trying the different scents! Peak Candle Supply seems to be another one highly mentioned on here. I would like to try them too. Good Luck
  9. I put them in freezer for about 7 to 10 minutes. No problem. I don't even use a mold release. I'm still new to soy. I think the BW hardens them up enough, so you don't need the stearic. I'm still in the testing stage with the tarts. They smell great. But the scent does not last long, only a day. I think I'll try less FO next time. I think I used 1.5 oz per lb. I only have a tea light burner and maybe it gets too hot. All burners all different. I really need to get an electric. Is anyone else just using 1 oz FO in their tarts? If so, does the scent last longer?
  10. I don't sell, just make soy for myself because it is much cheaper than to buy them. But I would buy from her and save myself work and money. I buy supplies in small quantities. She is underpricing if you ask me.
  11. Wickless candles are the easiest. No wick to worry about. What type of wax are you using? Basically just melt your wax, add dye and FO and pour. You will want a wide short container, but not so big that it doesn't fit on candle warmer. I know seamless tins work good. Maybe the 1/2 pint short masons would work well. Just remember the wax melts from the bottom up, unlike a wicked candle. So you would not want a tall container. Also, you get more scent from a wide mouth container because of the larger melt pool. I use wickless all the time. I love them.
  12. I have read on boards that stearic can increase frosting. Maybe try them with just the BW. How much BW do you use? I use a little less than 1/2 oz per lb and don't get frosting. My problem has been with scent with Ezsoy. I wouldn't mind frosting if I got a great throw. I don't sell. Just for myself and friends and family. How much FO do you use for your tarts? I tried 1.5 oz per lb. and it was too much I think.
  13. I want to buy an electric tart warmer. What would be considered a low wattage?
  14. I use Ezsoy for my container candles. I would like to try votives. What is your favorite soy wax for votives? Also, which wicks? I would be using standard metal votive molds with flared top. I would like my tarts to be a little firmer than the ones I make with Ezsoy. Also, the Ezsoy is a pain to get out of burners, even if I put them in the freezer.
  15. I use the 24 count mini muffin pan. I get 24 out of 1 lb, plus some. I think they must be less than 1/2 oz. They are perfect for tart burners, without breaking them apart. I also make the 2 oz scalloped in the floater molds.
  16. I just started making candles again after a botched try a few years ago. I chose soy. I only make candles for myself and gifts. I thought about trying to sell them. But I do not want to invest the time and money. But I do save myself a lot by making soy candles myself. I can make them for about 1/3 for what I can buy them for. And I think mine are just as good.
  17. I made candles with 1 oz FO and 1.5 oz FO. The ones with 1 oz FO had a much stronger hot throw. I used BCN FOs. I too think less is better.
  18. Would this be excess FO evaporating? Or is it most of it evaporating?
  19. Currently using Ezsoy for containers and tarts. Not having great results with scent. I would like to try a non soy votive and tart wax that doesn't need to cure forever. One that has a great throw. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if you make votives, what wicks are your favorite and what size?
  20. Mine smoked in my tea light warmer. But I added 1.5 oz FO(BCN) Spiced Cranberry. I am going to let my boyfriends mother try them in her electric tart warmer and see what happens before I melt them down and add more wax. I need to get an electric one.
  21. I do the same as you and use CD 12 or CD 14 in 8 oz jj. I am not having what I would call really great throws. I would like a Yankee or Village candle throw, but I'm not getting it. The Spiced Cranberry has been really hard for me. Took forever curing to get a hot throw. I used 1.5 per lb for tarts I made 3 weeks ago. I think this was too much FO. I am not getting any hot throw in tarts from SC. Autumn Spice is throwing great in tarts. The SC tarts actually had a little smoke from melt pool. I think that is a heavy oil and 1.5 oz was too much. If you come across any BCN scents that throw quick and strong, keep me posted, and I'll do the same.
  22. Oh forgot to add, I also used 1/2 oz beeswax pellets per lb. I don't know if this helps with scent or not, but it did make smoother tops.
  23. I too use Ezsoy and FOs from BCN. I made first test candles 6 weeks ago using 1 oz FO per lb. I tested weekly after 2 weeks of curing and wasn't getting a hot throw. Today, I tested them at 6 weeks of curing and they are throwing strong. I also made some with 1.25 oz FO that have cured for 3 weeks. These are not as strong as ones I made 6 weeks ago with 1 oz. I don't know why it took so much curing, but it did. I am going to go back to 1 oz and just let them cure a long time. I don't sell, just for gifts and myself. Also what wicks, jars and FOs are you using?
  24. Since I have heard so many great things about Peak, I want to order some wax and FO samples. I am only interested in making tarts and wickless candles. I do not sell. I only make them for Christmas gifts and myself. Since I do not sell, I would like to order from one place to save on shipping. Tried Ezsoy and BCN FOs, I am not getting the super hot throw so many of you seem to get. I'm getting a decent throw, but not great. Is there one wax I can use for tarts and wickless containers? If not, what would be the two waxes that would give me the best throw from Peaks? Also, what is the shelf life on wax? I use about 10 lbs per year. Only make them around the holidays. Also, will 1 oz of Peak scents really make a super strong throw?
  25. I live in Ohio. Have only placed one order. Was so surprised it was here in 3 days. But this was beginning of November, before the last minute Christmas rush.
