  1. while I realize that soap does not have to be labeled, I still label. And though I've done this for my personal use, I've never sold any soap with ls added, as I have no clue how to label the finished product. To avoid putting the info about the ls 'on' is wrong. Yet figuring out where the different %'s will factor would be near impossible.

Am I the only one caught in this ethical issue?

Isn't 1 tablespoon per pound of fragrance oil about 3% ?

Information I've seen states.... When labeling your product, additives incorporated at 3% should be listed after Glycine Soja (Soybean) Protein... (at least for the type of melt and pour I use).

Ruina states that she uses about 1/2 tsp per 4 ounces which would be 2 tsp per pound.

So if you use 1 tablespoon of fragrance oil per pound wouldn't you list the ingredients for the castile soap after fragrance?

The ingredients for Dr Bronners unscented castile soap are...

water, saponified organic coconut & organic olive oils (w/retained glycerin), organic hemp oil, organic jojoba oil, citric acid, vitamin E.

Would you list all that after the fragrance? Or.... besides being organic, some of those ingredients are already in the melt and pour base.... so would you only list the ingredients that are not already in the base(for example hemp and jojoba oil) after fragrance?

Please let me know if I'm completely wrong... I have just started working with mp 4 months ago (newbie).

  2. what exactly is the doctors ls? Is this Dr. Bonners liquid soap? Where do you get it? Is it all natural? Thanks.

I purchased Dr. Bronners at my local grocery store a while back when I decided to cut chemicals out of my household cleaning. You can use it in many ways. I may just try it in my melt and pour after reading this thread. :) If you can't find it at your local grocery store, try a store like Whole Foods, I know they have it but it may be a little more expensive there. You can also purchase it online.

  3. A lot depends on the heat underneth. I have a warmer with a 40 watt bulb right under the pan. By third day not smelling much. Same tart in another warmer.. still a 40 watt but not as close to the pan.. get longer scent. The warmers with a 25 watt give the longest scent. My customers are the ones getting the longer burn. Don't think their noses tune out as quickly as mine. As long as they're happy.. I don't care. I use paraffin and quality oils from all over.. nothing special.

btw.. it was yankee's quality [or lack of it] that got me into candle making. I hope I passed their standards long ago.

That's the hard part... not knowing what type of warmer your customers are using, there's so many available (good and bad).

I can't always trust my nose, which is why I get people to help me test. When I think a scent has a poor throw I give it to others to test and they seem to usually think it smells great (darn candle nose).

I'm thinking about starting to mix a little paraffin with my soy. I'm hoping it will help some with smudging I get in my cello bags, and maybe make them a little stronger? :)

  4. I agree... I asked a question on here some time ago if something like that was possible because I saw a website where they claimed their melts will last a week.

To answer the original question... I test each new scent I make and keep track of how long it lasts. I also give them to my Mom to test for me and we compare notes.

  5. Does anyone routinely receive candles as gifts from people? I got one for Christmas from my sister-in-law. At first I thought it was a gag gift, but it wasn't as I watched my other sister-in-law receive the same gift. Do people not realize that we make our own candles?

Anyway, the gift was an electric tart warmer with a few sets of tarts. So I plugged it in to see how well it did in the bathroom. I plan to use my own tarts in it, but since it came with some I thought I would try them out. I'm not going to name company that made the products, but I will say it's a well known candle name, especially with home parties. Anyway, so I plug it in, and melt the first set of tarts. Not just one, I put the whole six pack out of the clamshell box, because we have a lot of boys in our house using the potty :) I went back a little while later, and I swear I couldn't smell anything!! I know my nose gets a little desensitized when I'm making candles, but I wasn't doing that, and usually I can smell other scents except for what I'm pouring even when I am pouring.

How are these people managing to have continued sales when their product doesn't seem to be any good. The tart warmer certainly did it's job and melted the wax. But the tarts really had no smell at all!! Are they just surviving on their brand name alone?

:laugh2: That sounds like my house! My mom has purchased Tarts for me as recently as my last Birthday in April, and I've been making them for the last 2.5 years!

  6. I will be ordering a case of ecosoya pillar blend from Wholesale Supplies Plus (closest to me, best shipping rate), and I wanted to get some fragrance oils along with it. I usually get my oils from Candlescience. I was wondering if anybody has some suggetions about which ones throw good in soy? I already looked at the thread which had a few listed, but was hoping there are more. I've used their cinnamon stick but found I had to double the amount of oil to get a decent throw. Can anybody help me?

    Thanks!

    Stacey

  7. Thanks for the tip. :smiley2: I'm expecting to receive some silk in the mail soon. I have to wait for the base I'll be playing with to come after Southern Soapers ships out their orders from the pre buy. I hate waiting. :(

  8. Those are very pretty! I will be experimenting with some sfic bases soon and would be overjoyed if they turned out as pretty (doubt they will, I'm too new to being creative with mp). I have a bid on a velveeta box on ebay right now. I saw that people use them on this board. After seeing your soaps, I can't wait to use it!

  9. I just ordered some stuff from Go Planet Earth, it should be here on Monday! They are only one state away from me so shipping was pretty reasonable.

I'm wondering about the quality of their soap base. They're only about an hour and a half away from me. I have been on their site a few times, but wasn't sure if I should try them.

  10. I'm somewhat new to melt and pour too. I took advantage of the pre buy and bought 3 lbs each of the aloe, goat milk, shea, clear, and 1 lb of the shaving soap so that I can try them all out and mix them up a bit. I plan on sprucing them up with some additives too (been doing alot of research on craftserver figuring out what I want to add and how much). I didn't bother purchasing any oatmeal base because I like to add my own ground oats. If you have the funds maybe you could do the same... it should be alot of fun playing around with the different bases when they arrive. :smiley2:

  11. Candybee,

I was thinking about some of the liquid ones that are preblended in glycerin. I have read how the powdered ones are very difficult to blend in melt and pour. They say the neons are non-cosmetic grade, but I can't seem to find any additional info on them. Alot of the links on their website don't seem to be working properly.

    Thanks for the reply.
