  1. This may be an off the wall question but I am testing new waxes since the J300 has been discontinued. I really am about out of my mind in doing so :rolleyes2 I know that the melt pool is what provides the hot throw but do certain wicks give a certain "kick" to the throw also? I can achieve a full melt pool with about any wick choice, but have you found that a certain wick will increase the scent throw?

I have used zinc, cotton, CD, & LX and am mainly testing 50/50 soy blends and haven't found anything yet that I am liking. Thought maybe my wick choice could be the culprit. So slap me if this is a dumb question :P

  2. Try this: Heat to 185, add dye if you color them, then add FO at 175, cool and pour at 135. I did this, and got very nice firm flat top with ony two small patches of frosting. The soft tops only came after I burned, and the frosting increased after a few days curing time. It has subsided in some areas and increased on the top somewhat. I'm not that concerned about the frosting since I don't plan on coloring my plain soy candles anything other than maybe with white color block. Also I have noticed that I can wick down compared to 415/BW.

I'll try your suggestions and let you know how this journey thru "soy world" goes for me. :D Thanks!

  3. I power burned my AJP tester for 7 1/2 hours, and it came out with great flame size, 1/2" MP and very good throw. Some of the frosting has minimized. The weird thing is that the top is very soft and appears to have underlying frost. Anyone else have this?

I received and poured my 464 yesterday and YES my tops look the same as yours only it was when it set up, I haven't popped any wicks in yet to burn it. This is my first attempt at soy and I think I failed miserably pouring it. I heated to 175 added 8% Christmas Cheer from BCN with a combo of red and brown liquid dyes. Poured at 150 and at first I thought I had a great looking candle. But once completely cooled I have the rough, frosted top with frost happening on the sides. I tried hitting with a heat gun a couple times and the lumpy, rough, frosty top and sides come back :(

Cold throw smells great but it looks very bad to me.

  4. BCN has Cool Water (Type) as well as Southern Scentsations. I just finished testing both and they were very comparable in throw. I have just ordered a sample of Eucalyptus from Keystone but haven't gotten it yet. I haven't added either to my line yet, since I am in the testing phases. Don't know if the Eucalyptus will move well, but I have had a couple requests. HTH :D

  5. I have bought my 12 oz frosted metro jars from FancyCandleJars.com and they have held up nicely (don't seem to thin). The quality is good and the price isn't bad either. I am quite certain he has both the clear and frosted to choose from. Customer service is great too.

  6. My last several cases of J300 haven't performed up to par...instead of pulling away, there have been major wet spots and numerous other problems. I've tried 2 different suppliers so they definitely screwed it up before deciding to discontinue it. It is a more opaque wax. You can also tell by the smell of hot J300...definite soy smell so that might be a clue for you, too.

I am finding the same issues with the last few cases of J300 :undecided In addition to the changes you stated I am also finding that it is throwing black soot when burning :(

Edited to add - hot throw has changed too!

  7. From what I understand, they are getting rid of it permanently, but keeping J50 and J223. I'm not sure when this will take place, but it's supposed to be a done-deal now.

I also use J300 and I don't need a repour. I pour into the wide mouth pint and half pints and once cooled the wax starts to "crawl" up the wick the kind crack away (if the makes sense), but no dip. I hit them quick with my heat gun and it takes care of the problem.

About J300 being discontinued . . .I have been researching this issue since I LOVE this wax. From what I have gathered so far it seems that the IGI 6006 is supposed to be the replacement (???) A couple of suppliers have told me (per IGI) it is the same wax formulation and since IGI bought out Astorlite they won't be making both. I haven't tested the 6006 yet in a side by side. But will be soon! I am hoping they are the same since testing is tedious for me.

Sorry sawdustcottage to get off topic and hijack your thread . . .

  8. Oooh - I got so excited when I seen this post - I have been eye balling the WixWax 50/50 for awhile now since I order frequently from AWE. I used to use the paraffin blend WixWax for quite awhile but I switched to a soy blend before they had the 50/50 available. I am going to keep an eye on this post - and yes I will grab a slab to test when I place my next order. I'll keep you posted . . .

  9. Love those jars, and looks like you've gotten some great ideas for how to label yours. ;)

I'm wondering do these only come in the 2 sizes I saw at the Jar Store? (8 & 12oz)

I'd like to use these also, but I would like to have a smaller jar (like maybe 4-6oz) for those people who are looking for something less expensive (you know those "cheap" peeps?? LOL).

I've looked but the only places I've seen have the 8 and 12 oz. sizes and that's it. :(

    Sorry to hijack your post.

Michi - Yes I have got some great ideas on how to label or shall I say "not label" these jars :laugh2: A heartfelt THANKS to everyone who has replied

I got my jars from FancyCandleJars.com. They too only offer the 8 oz and the 12 oz size. The 12 oz only holds about 9 oz of wax in order to be able to get the lid on. I didn't get the 8 oz size but am thinking maybe it would only hold about 6 oz of wax? Maybe someone else can chime in and say for sure. I am thinking it may be worth getting a couple samples to test. I am pleased with their prices, quality, and customer service. It may be worth a try for ya.

  10. I am going to use a narrow ribbon around the "neck" of the jar ( but wide enough to have the name professionally printed on the ribbon) The ribbon will not be so wide that it shows below the fill line of the wax. It will actually take the space between the fill line and the bottom of the lid.

I hope that makes sense. I have it figured out in my head. I saw some ribbon that had been printed on that was exceptionally nice.

Simple and elegant...just like the jar. I LOVE these jars. They are the first readily available jar to come around that has the look I LOVE!

That is a wonderful idea . . where did you find a place to professionally print on the ribbon? and how would you affix it to the jar? Sorry if it is a dumb question.

  11. I am testing the non-frosted ones and LOVE the way the look and the fact that they are much easier to wick than some other jars (ahem, balmoral). I think it would be just fine to use a label on the bottom with your info and the scent name on it. It wouldn't detract from the jar, but would give the customer the necessary information.

I feel much better now knowing that I am not alone in thinking how nice these jars look without any outside labels, and that you also agree. I was torn between picking the frosted and the clear. Chose the frosted since they are unique to my area. I can only imagine how pretty the clear ones would be.

And yes, THEY ARE EASY TO WICK :yay:

  12. What about having a warning label on the bottom and your business info on the lid?

I have considered that . . I have on hand the 2.5" round in white and kraft. I could play around to see if I can come up with something appealing. I just don't know . . .even the lid is pretty :D

I was thinking that maybe a clear label on the lid might work but I don't want to buy them if they detract from the jar. (Call me cheap :P )

  13. I am currently testing the frosted metro jars and I LOVE the looks of this jar :yay: My dilema is they are so pretty without any labels on them and I am at a loss as to whether or not to label at all. I don't much care for hang tags so I would rather not go that route. Would it be against the norm to just have my product info on the bottom warning label and leave them plain? I have played around with colored string and charms and they really look pretty but is time consuming. I guess my concern would be my company info isn't in clear view for re-orders. Any suggestions?

  14. So everywhere is get set can get ruined by fo that's on the outside of the bear? Scratching my head here...

I put a warning label on them letting everyone know to hang the bears to scent a small area - in cars, gym lockers, closests, etc. Also state that they are not a toy and to be kept out of reach from children and pets. After squirking them with oil I let them dry a bit before packaging. I sell them along side my sachets.

  15. I know I have seen a thread on this but I guess I am not good at "search" words 'cause I came up with nothing :embarasse

I have a presto pot full of melted wax and water bubbles popping at me - What is the best way to get rid of it or do I go ahead and use the wax until I get to the bottom of the pot to remove the water?
