  1. That's good to hear Sheila - I'm in TN, so I hope shipping will be better! Thanks!
  2. Yes - here's their website if you want to take a look http://www.tncandlesupplies.com/
  3. I've tried GL's 70/30 - like it - except I get some weird horizontal lines - can't seem to get my 4 inch containers wicked unless i double wick though. Has anyone tried TN's 70/30? It's a little cheaper than GL's and is closer to my home, so I would hope shipping would be a bit less. Anyone compare it to GL's? I'm ordering a sample once I get back from vacation. Just wanted other folks insights. Thanks
  4. What is the significance of melt points? Is there a link that explains this?
  5. Looks like the peach one reached more to the bottom than the red, both look good. How did you do the swirls? Is there a tutorial or instructions on this site?
  6. I'm searching to see if there's a guideline on what temperature the outside of glass containers should be within to be considered safe. I'm double wicking 4 inch jars with CDN's and parasoy blend (mostly soy). Tried searching, couldn't find the right thread, figured there is probably one out there, just not wording it correctly. If anyone knows, would appreciate the link. Also, how do you get the temperature of glass?
  7. Has anyone successfully single wicked a 4" container using either JS 50/50 or GL 70/30, and if so, what wick worked?
  8. I took this video of a candle I made with GL 70/30 and doublewicked with Eco 1's. The flames have danced like this since the 1st burn. I do however get a nice melt pool, good scent throw. There's just a little soot - you maybe able to see it on the upper right rim area. I can calm these flames with a capper, but otherwise they dance. Is this acceptable, or should I keep experimenting with different wicks? http://www.godivadiva.com/images/5.06.07_3210.MOV Thanks!
  9. Is there a chart that differentiates which wicks burn down or out faster?
  10. Check Auto Owners - I contacted an agent here that writes small business and he got a quote for around $400 for $1M general liability. Great price considering I had a quote from another agent from Allied insurance for $896 - both same coverages.
  11. Libbey used to have cascade jars (also called melting pot jars on The jar store site). I really wanted this jar, but apparently it has been discontinued. I've tried jars from the jar store before, but didn't feel they had the same quality as Libbey (felt thinner but could just be me). Checked Anchor Hocking - did not see this jar in their catalog either. Does anyone know any other glass companies that have this jar?
  12. I've searched and cannot get a good feel to find out why people blend paraffin and soy. Is it because adding paraffin makes soy easier to work with, or because it helps with scent throw, or both?
  13. Really late coming into this thread - searched insurance - was curious how the Title of display case and insurance were connected - started reading and couldn't stop. Eeekk - this thing took so many twists and turns. I am shopping insurance. I work as a claims adjuster - definitely want to be protected if/when I decide to start selling. I was even a bit concerned about giving candles to friends/family to test and as gifts - I handle auto claims and know very little about homeowners/product liability coverage/claims. Several folks at work, who I had given candles to try, loved them and said they wanted me to make some for them to buy. I checked my HO insurance - and I'd have to check the wording again but I think as long as I didn't make more than $2000, it would provide liability coverage (Don't quote me though, cause I haven't looked in months). I considered it, then two incidences occurred which made me gun shy. 1st - I had given a friend a small candle to test burn for me - things going good - she liked the smell - the way it burned - yada yada yada - then one day she tells me that she walks in her bedroom and my candle is smoking like crazy! And she starts freaking out and tells her boyfriend that she has to let me know what happened. He then tells her that it was his fault. 1st the wax is about 1/2 inch (she burns hers all the way to the bottom regardless of the warning). But when he was lighting it, he couldn't reach the wick with his lighter, so he twirled up some paper, lights it, then stuffs the rest of the paper into the container! None of my other candles have done this, thank goodness, so I'm pretty sure it was the paper in the candle and not my candle per se.:undecided 2nd - I had given another friend a different candle to test. I always point out the warning label, suggest they trim wick, avoid marathon burns, stop burning when less than 1/2 inch, etc. This gal's boyfriend told me that one of my candle containers broke while they were burning the candle. I'm like freaking inside - what happened? She was a bit embarrassed to tell me, and even said she wasn't going to tell me and wish he hadn't brought it up. So - apparently she heeded none of the warnings. She had burned this candle "all day", didn't trim the wick, let the wax burn down almost to nothing. This was a small container (4 or 5 oz). She said the wick had bent over and the flame was up against the glass, and she guessed the heat caused the glass to pop. It didn't catch anything on fire, and she was in the room when it happened - at least she heeded one warning! Needless to say, I would just feel way more comfortable with insurance. I love candle making though, and I hope I can sell one day, when I'm all grown up. So - are there any TN chandlers out there who has insurance? I found one agent but their minimum quote was so high, I want to shop around.
  14. Thanks - I was just messing around anyway - until I get around to ordering 10lbs from Greenleaf to test. I did search on this board on issues others may have had with Greenleaf's 70/30 blend, and cracking was one of them. So I just thought it was an issue with 70/30.
  15. I mixed some 50/50 with 100% soy to get a 70/30 blend. First pour the 70/30 cracked - course it was cold that day and I didn't cover them. So I poured another batch, covered w/ towel and box, and they set up without cracking - yeah! - but then another question popped into my head. Has anyone experienced this blend cracking when setting up after burning?
  16. I think the IL address is for Courtyard Candles and Crafts, Inc., which appears to carry Yankee, Colonial, Wood Wick, Root and Greenleaf candles.
  17. But is Greenleaf Candle and Green Leaf Candle Supply the same? I found this site and can't tell - I know one is one word and the other is two, however they are so close. http://www.courtyardcandles.com/greenleaf_candles.htm
  18. I'm using zinc wicks, and haven't had problems now that I got the right sizes. If I don't trim the wicks, then I do have some soot. But keeping them trimmed, they burn well.
  19. Their FO's appear a little pricey compared to other candle supply shops. Is it because you use less per lb?
  20. These are jars from Libbey - I like the interlude shapes best (far right and front candles). I like the roman jar (left), too. Has anyone used these shapes in their business and if yes, have they sold well, or do most people prefer simple, traditional shapes like the mason and barrel type jars?
  21. Has anyone used this company's FOs and what is your opinion of them?
  22. What diameter jars and which wicks do you use for each? I'm using this wax and haven't been able to find a wick that gives me a full melt pool, unless I'm using a very small jar.
  23. I've had a heck of a time finding a wick that will give me a full melt pool with this wax. I'm using JS 50/50. I've written to Becky, and she wrote me back once and asked how much wax, jar, etc, but then I didn't hear back from her. I remember getting an email newsletter type thing that said she had a electrical problem, so maybe she's busy with that. Anyway, here are the types of sample wicks that I have - LX, CD, Ecos, Premier, Zinc, and HTP. These are the jars that I'm using: 17 oz Barrell Jar w/ diameter of 3.5 4.5 oz Interlude jar w/ diameter of 2.5 12 oz Interlude jar w/ diameter 3.75 11.5 oz Roman jar w/ diameter of 3.5 What wicks would you start with testing? Or what do you think my best chances are? Are there any other wicks you would recommend? Thanks for all suggestions.
  24. That was funny Silver. Sad that people have to be a little apprehensive about asking questions.
  25. That sounds like a great test schedule, and it makes a good deal of sense. Thanks for sharing. 402 is LP402, Golden Brands pure soy. Got it from Aztec, along with the J223. I've seen other people refer to the LP415 as just 415 and the GW464 as 464, so I thought it was common just to drop the LP/GW. Thanks again.
