  1. I'm still trying on my old batch of 415. Poured 8 oz. jelly jar with 9% FO (the wax supplier goes even higher), off white (barely) and a HTP 126 wick. Two hours later it is almost out and not a full melt pool. two and a half hrs. later it is out. Jason mentioned adding crisco and am playing around with amounts but wondered if anyone uses KY 115 soy that melts at a lower temp. as an additive? Wondered about adding this or trying to add some paraffin (ordered some Harmony blend as it has a lower melt point but now reading that it smokes fairly regularly...(I need to do more homework before I let my credit card do the walking! LOL). Any help? I hate to go to a bigger wick in such a small jar. TIA. Beth

I use a mix of half KY126 and 115...with beeswax at 2-3%...I have been using htp 105's but am finding I can step down to a 93 on a lot of them. HTH

  2. I have never met the lady who wrote me the email below but do make candles for her SIL. She emailed me a week or so ago and I sent her the suppliers by state link and suggested she choose a supplier close to her, get a sample kit to start with and TEST TEST TEST. Then I got this email yesterday and still haven't found the choice words for a reply yet. I am appauled at some people.

"I just brought a bunch of your candles to my sister-in-law in Pittsburgh. She and her daughters loved all of them. They had emailed you once a week or so ago about getting info on how to start their own candle business. The oldest daughter just graduated college and is job hunting but needs some income now! There is no real competition back here in this area so she would love to start her own business. Problem is that they are real unsure about the technical aspect of your business. They would love it if you could provide the web addresses of your suppliers. They would like to stick with your exact product type and smell since they are of such great quality! They are really interested in the candles and the smellie jellies. They had never seen a smellie jellie and fell in love with them. Could you tell them how to make a smellie jellie? They printed off basic candle making instructions from the internet but need someone to mentor them telling them how much scent to use to how much wax, how to tell the correct time to pour, what type of wax (all soy or a mix), how to tell the correct wick to use, how much wax makes each candle. How do we figure the cost versus pricing how much does a single candle cost you so she can figure her profit margin. Where do you get the jars and special jellie lids? The college grad obviously has limited funding currently and wants to use your scents since she knows they would be a hot seller around here. Could you tell her if you have mixed the scents or did they come in that scent? They can find craft stores back here but I thought you maybe were buying your supplies from the internet which would be easier for them so they could buy in bulk versus all the small quantity purchases. We would really appreciate your help on this. The job market is so bad back here but amazingly nobody is handmaking candles. Everybody buys store bought ones so we know she could make a go of the business but we really need your guidance. I realize you are very busy but if you could find time to help my niece out we would really appreciate it. Thank you so much for all the help! And trust me this won't effect me buying from you because I am not driving 5 hours for a candle even if it is made by a family member! Thanks again for helping her!"

    Crazy huh?

OMG...does she live in the twighlight zone? I love the last line! She just assumes you are going to teach them how to make YOUR candles! lol...I don't think I would even respond to this email...if she emails again I would say that there really is no way to "guide" them through candlemaking...it is learned through trial and error and usually takes months to years to learn how to make one type.

  3. What you're seeing resembles published test results for these wicks. I had once noticed the numbers seemed to be all over the place and wondered if maybe they didn't test them properly. But maybe they did.

    http://www.wicksunlimited.com/atkins_pearce_performa_wicks.php

Performa 90 seems to be one of the weakest. Performa 100 is nearly the strongest. Performa 80 might be the one you need.

Notice even the yield numbers are out of order. Strange.

Right On...they are all over the place and inconsistent. I'm not too impressed with these! The numbers seem to not relate to eachother very well. It was a real head scratcher to see the 90 going out and the 85 burning fine...I do think an 80 would work if it is a bit smaller than the 85. Thanks! I will keep on testing...thinking I may stick with the htp's for now...in any case it was interesting to see this oddity!

  4. I am testing performa wicks in my 8 oz widemouth jj's just to compare to the htp's I have been using up to now. I like how the wicks stick straight up but am noticing a lot more mushrooming and have an even stranger question. I have the following results after 3 hours of burning with the performa wicks in these jars using cinnamon red hots f/o. This is the 4th burn on these jars.

performa 85-good burn possibly too hot- about 1/4" deep melt pool.

performa 90-very week flame...looks like it will go out- about 1/4" deep melt pool.

performa 95-too hot- about 1/2" deep melt pool.

performa 100-way too hot- almost 1" deep melt pool.

My question is why is the performa 90 wick so week compared to the 85 and 95? I trim them all to 1/4 before each burn. Is it because that wick is too hot and can't keep up? If that was the case wouldn't the 95 look similar and why does the 85 look fine? I think I will be sticking with htp's so it's not a big deal...I have a few tests left to do before I decide but I thought these results were strange.

  5. If some people would just use it!!!

I don't know why it irritates me so badly, but bad spelling DRIVES ME NUTS........:P

I know...for some reason when I read poor spelling it feels like fingernails scratched on a chalk board! I always edit my posts because I have trouble spelling and would like to appear somewhat intelligent. Must be that crazy English teacher I had in High School or it's the fact that I want people to understand what I am saying...:naughty:or it could be the friend in my head telling me to! LOL!

    Sorry...I could not control it!

  6. Tis true, bigger isn't always better soap.

How about a wearing a holster for that cucumber?

OMG...at first glance at the heading of this topic I thought the Corona's were getting to me...now I see I'm not the only one who has their mind in the gutter...LMAO!:laugh2:
