My experience with dye, some suppliers are more potent than others but generally all pretty decent. I liked the liquid because it was easy to just add a couple drops and be done with it.

I don't use it anymore because of the way it effects wicking, certain colors can really mess with the sizing and also cause mushrooming that you wouldn't normally get.

But of course, everyone has different experiences with candle stuff so just get a couple colors from the usual places that carry good stuff like Candle Science / The Flaming Candle / Aztec etc and give it a try. Worst case scenario you don't like it and you're only out a few bucks.

Perfect!! Thanks so much for the help!!

  2. I have been making candles for about 15 years now but have never used dye. Thinking of trying a couple ideas I have. Would anyone share their experience with dye? Is liquid dye better? Are all dyes pretty much the same? Thanks so much for any help!

That sounds to me like you're not using the right type / size. If you're having problems with the flame going out at the start then experiment with the booster varieties.

This is exactly why I bought the kits from WW Co. and paid like $25 for the candle kits because I thought buying from WW Co...one would think they would have figured out what wick to use but that definitely wasn’t the case. Something just can’t be right because no one would want to buy the candles I made from WW Co! I bought 4 kits and none of them would stay lit. They just sucked. They don’t tell you anything about having to prime them. I mean they must work for some people cause seems a lot of people like wood wicks. 🤷‍♀️

My favorite is Gypsy Rose (MW).  It's a great true rose scent (thorns and all) and works fab in candles and soap.  I also like Circus Concessions as an unusual scent for fall.  It very much does smell like the concessions at the circus or county fair.  I order a lot of basics from FB.  Not earth shattering scents, but good performers at the right price....PPW, Spiced Apples & Peaches, This Old House, Mulberry, and I forget what else.  I also order some of the MW scents....Bella, Sea Witch, Bergamot Tobacco, Celtic Mist, Tea & Cakes.

Thank you so much for sharing those with me! 🥰🥰🥰

First of all, congratulation on your large account.  :icon_highfive:

Most big wax manufacturer would require 2 minimum pallets per order and guaranteed annual sales volume contract.  However, even though Golden Wax AAK is an big international company, they work little different than other big manufacturers.  They have what they call distribution partners all over the United States.  In CA where I live, Accu-Blend Corp is their wax blender and distributor.  In IL, it's Gateway Food Products Company, etc.  These wax blender/distributor would only require 1 pallet minimum order.  You should contact AAK and ask for their distribution partner in your state.  https://www.aak.com/applications/technical-products/candles/golden-wax/

I don't think EZ Soy wax of BCN is same as GB 415.  You might want to ask for Product Spec Sheet from BCN and compare.  Or ask BCN.

    Good luck with you!

Thank you so much BusyBee! I super appreciate your help!! 😊😉🥰

  6. Does anyone know if EZ Soy wax is the exact same wax as GB 415? We got a very large account and I’m wondering if I could buy it by the pallet? Do wax suppliers sell directly to us or do we have to buy from BCN, Candlescience..etc? Thanks so much for any help!

Several things could be the issue here.  A few thoughts:

You may not be doing yourself any favors burning so quickly after pouring.  As the wax cures, the burn can change. Sometimes a hard to wick oil can settle in after a bit and burn just fine.  I use a molasses FO that's like that.  Barely burns at first, but it burns fine after a decent cure.

Sometimes an oil is just a bugger to wick under normal circumstances.  If a larger wick doesn't work, I usually go for a different wick series.  Eco would be my choice here probably.

Are you sure you aren't over-wicked?  Over-wicking can cause tunneling too. (I haven't used 415 in many moons, so I have no clue what would be an appropriately sized wick.)

I've used a bunch of oils from AFI with no issues.  I've been pleased with all the oils I've tried so I don't think it's an oil quality problem as long as it is a FO for candles.

Thanks so much for your help! I’ve always waited 2 weeks before testing so I had no clue if I burned earlier that could be my issue. The scent throw is amazing! I could smell it within 15 minutes in our living room which is a very large room. I’ll give them some longer time to cure and try again. Thank you so much!! I super appreciate you!

  8. Wondering if anyone could give me their thoughts on this? I am having troubles with tunneling that I’ve never had before with my candles. The scent is Cinnamon Sugared Doughnuts type. I use a CD 12 wick in a 16 oz mason jar, soy wax (GB 415) I’ve tried doing 1.2 oz, 1 oz, .75oz of oil it’s all still tunneling and the flame at 1.2 oz was super weak like it was clogging the wick so I went down to 1 oz. At 1 oz- the flame was not as weak and still had great scent throw but still tunneling. At .75, strong scent throw, still not as weak of a flame but it still is tunneling.

I’ve tried wicking up to a CD 14 and it’s doing the same thing (but slightly better). I’m burning 1-2 days after making because I need to get it figured out (large account and not a ton of time). Could this be affecting why it’s tunneling. I’ve never used AFI oil before. I’ve been making candles for since 2005 so it’s not that I’m just starting. When I first started I did test with HTP wicks and ECO but found that CD’S worked best for me.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be super appreciated.

I think the most frustrating thing about wooden wicks is the company itself, they really don't know what they're talking about. I've tried on numerous occasions talking to them about more than just the simple questions and they really don't have any idea. It's almost as if they don't even use the wicks themselves. And when it comes to their waxes.... forget it. One lady told me I have to check the flashpoint of the FO to determine when to add it, I ended the conversation right there.

Everything TallTayl said is pretty much everything covered. I couldn't get their waxes to throw worth a crap at all, it's quite sad for how expensive they are.

Oh my gosh! YES!! I was told the same thing about checking the flashpoint so I knew when to add fragrance and I thought..is she joking? Then I remember thinking ok does she really believe this? Then I thought maybe I’m the one cracking up lol! I thought surely they must know a ton about wood wicks, ya know? The Wood Wick Co is after all their name! My beautiful wood wick candles are s***!

I was irritated though to say the least. $100 for 4 candles that won’t even light. 🤨😤

    I learned with wooden wicks:

    1) I have to “prime” them.  I stick them in the melter as the wax melts and periodically hold them at the bottom of the pot until they stop pushing air bubbles.  When I don’t do that I experience inconsistent burns like you spdescribe.

    2) you need to light from the bottom of the wick to give them some fuel to get going. If you only light the wood part it will char an limit the capillary action for the next few millimeters.

    3) when relighting it helps to remove the charred bit from the last burn before lighting.

    4) if they look like they are petering out as it burns, whack off some of the char.

i started and stopped with wooden wicks at least eleventeen times.  Am loving them right now in my wax blends.

Thanks so much for the pointers! Could you recommend a supplier for wood wicks please? Trying to decide if this is something I want to start testing or not. I’d like to buy one to see if it is worth all the testing or not. They must be way better than what I made!!

  11. Wondering if I could ask ya all’s thoughts on something. I use RTV  High Temperature Silicone to keep my wicks in place. It works amazing but I’m trying to speed up my wicking process. I let it dry overnight after wicking. Has anyone tried using the High Temperature Tape for wicking? I’ve tried the wick tabs but a couple times my moved and so I switched to the Slicone. Any thoughts? Thanks so much! I super appreciate ya all so much!

  12. I have always wanted to try out wooden wicks. I’ve never ordered from here before till now. I bought 2 kits from them which I really had a hard time cause it was $100 for 4 candles but I thought that since it’s in a kit they sell I shouldn’t have to worry about which wick and wax etc. to buy. I have been making candles for 15 years now but have zero experience with wooden wicks. They are horrible! They won’t stay lit. I’ve had to relight constantly. I’ve only tried 2 of the 4 I made. After lighting over and over one will stay lit for a while but just barely. The other one is tunneling and worse than the first one. There definitely isn’t any crackle. Any thought or suggestions would be super appreciated. Is there something I may have done wrong? Thanks so much for any help!

  13. Thank you so much Gail!! I’ll add that to my order tomorrow. That was perfect timing!! I love that scent too!! I had it years ago but can’t remember where I got it from. I think it might have been CS but their shipping is super expensive so I’m super happy you shred with me🥰

Hope you have a great weekend!
