  1. After reading for weeks & weeks, getting tips from the kind members here, I finally ordered some supplies and, Presto!:undecided (Yes, pun intended!)

Unfortunately I do not know anything about the wax chunks since I melted down this big candle Linda had stored away forever since she didn't like it.

I poured at 190 (IGI 1218, no additives) and held the heat gun to the mold till I saw bubbles. (another tip from the forum) This made the sides very shiny and smooth. You can see I missed some at the bottom cause the mold was sitting on paper at the time and I didn't want to burn the house down!

I'm really liking the white effects around the chunks. Can anyone tell me what happened?

  2. Thank you all. You've answered my question with the usual generosity I've come to see on this forum.

We are gonna start with 'regular' wax and get into some 'feathering' wax later (Astrolite) but only after we get comfortable with experimenting. Then, if we still want to experiment with soy... Who knows.

I've ordered my supplies and am just waiting now.:D

  3. I was going thru the old forum, Aug. 18 and 19 2003. There are 2 entries called, "Astrolite F3 Rounds" and "Astrolite F3 Square". The patterns of the wax are beautiful so I tried to find Astrolite F3. Astrolite is around but no F3.

Can anyone enlighten me on the info on this patterning or the wax?

I finally ordered my supplies (for those who know, I'm starting again after 20 years) so while I wait, I'm looking at all the old pics getting ideas.

    Thanks.

  4. I'm almost ready to order some supplies after reading for weeks. (I'm the guy that posted, starting again after 20 years.)

You all have been a big help.

To those that use wick pins... when you take the pin out, how do you get the wick thru the hole?

Those that pour wickless... How do you get the wick in and keep it in the center?

I plan on making pillars mostly but my Wife would want to make some container candles. If memory serves, I remember all kinds of wick problems.

Thank you so much for your suggestions.

  5. What I used to do 20 or more years ago, and am going to set up this weekend is a double laundry tub on wheels. One side has sand and the other side has water. BUT, this will only work in a basement or garage where you can leave it, drain it, etc.

The laundry tubs are cheap at Lowes.

  6. Thank you!

I showed the picture to my Wife and she loved it too. I am printing both sets of instructions along with your picture to act as a 'goal'.

Please let me get this straight, All the wax is from the same batch, it's just 'dyed' from the chips?? If so, how did you get such a large spot of color in that one spot? It looks like rasberry filling in an icecream sundae.:)

Any secrets in the wax? Or do you just use 'regular' wax?

    Thank you so much.

  7. The large Lavender candle, the one that looks like icecream with cherrys in it, can you PLEASE tell me how you did it? I am just trying to get back into candle making and need to know the process of how you did this beautiful candle. I promise I won't go into business and sell a million!:highfive:

I'm going to do it for friends and family only.

    Please!

    Please.....

    Thanks.

  8. Thanks a lot for the information, I have been reading-reading......

I want to make 3 kinds of candles. Pillar, container and freeform, you know, the one of a kind that are looked at more than burned.

    Here are my first questions:

Which is better, Soy wax, 'regular' wax or Parrafin for my purposes?

The mottling and crackling is bomb! How do you get crackle? I've been reading about mottling wax but you people seem to add 'extra' stuff to get a really super look.

A side note... I think it's been more than 20 years!

I'll check back later. Thank you.

  9. Hi folks...

I just signed up to this forum cause I'm gonna start making candles again after 20 years (and a former wife:D ) and I was awed by how it has changed.

Before, we had one kind of wax, 2 additatives, one to make it opaque and one to make it translucent, 10 or so block dyes, etc..... Now there are so many different kinds of wax! Etc.....

I understand the basics from before but I don't understand all the new stuff like these letter/number combinations for different kinds of wax and all the other stuff and what it means.

Where can I get this new information? Can someone point me in the right direction? Would appreciate any help.

    One other question:

I was crusing the net looking at candlemaking supplies and found this one site that sold wax that did different things like mottling and starry-kind of stuff, really beautiful stuff! But I can't find the site now!:( Is there one or two places everyone gets their supplies? What am I looking for?

In short... Any information anyone can send my way would be most appreciated. I am going thru the forum now and reading-reading...!

    Thank you all.
