Beth
Just google it with " " around the name. Or you can do a trademark search. And you can also go to godaddy.com & try a url with the name to see if it's available. Edited November 26, 2011 by Beth

Seamist
Make sure the name you pick also has an open domain. Get the website domain and park it if you have to. That way you don't name you company and later on not be able to get the website name to go with it.Here is a site to check and see if the domain name you want is taken. http://instantdomainsearch.com/Below is a link that may help you check and register you name with your state. http://www.sba.gov/content/register-your-fictitious-or-doing-business-dba-name/Also ~ After you choose a name, Google it to make sure there is not a name that is similar or close to your name or website. You don't want others to confuse your company with another company that has a similar name.HTH and Good Luck...
TammyGCC
The website domain is a great idea. It took me a long time to come up with my name. I am really happy with the name I chose. Good luck to you.
